CENTEBIN G MAB/KER FOR FULL FASHIONED HOSIERY Application filed May 26, 1931. Serial No. 540,161.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in theart of hosiery and more particularly to full fashioned stockings for women, the primary object of the invention being to provide means in or on the stocking as a marker so that when the stocking is applied to the leg, the seam in the rear thereof may be centered with respect to the leg of the wearer.
A further object of the invention resides in knitting into the welt of the stocking a marking means which will in no sense appear objectionable to the appearance of the stocking but which may be readily observed 5 when applying the stocking so that the rear.
seam may be centered on the leg of the wearer with no difiiculty.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a marking means of the I character mentioned in a position to designate the place where the supporter may be engaged and which will automatically enable the seam of the stocking to be centered with respect the leg of the wearer.
A still further object of the invention resides in knitting into the welt of the stocking a pair of spaced strips which are located in the front of the stocking so that when the supporter is engaged with the welt of the stocking between said strips, the wearer will know that the seam in the rear of the stocking is centered with respect to the leg.
A further object resides in providing a stocking with a marking means as above referred to which may be produced at no increase in the cost of manufacture and which will prove efficient and useful in practice.
ll ith these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly set forth in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stocking constructed in accordance with my invention Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation thereof enlarged showing the marking and its relation to the rear seam of the stocking;
illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
It is a well known fact that difficulty is encountered by women wearing full fashioned hosiery orin wearing circular knit hosiery with mock seams in centering the seams in the rear of the legs, due to the fact that said stockings are not properly applied to the legs or that the supporters are improperly engaged with the stockings or that through the swishing of the dresses the stockings become twisted on the legs. By providing some form of marking means on or within the welt of the stocking, the supporters may be engaged with the welt of the stocking in such a manner as to center the rear seam of the stockin and thus assure the wearer that said stocklng is properly applied. It is most distasteful to women to observe the seams of stockings positioned irregularly and some effort and embarrassment is encountered in straightening the same while worn. My invent-ion contemplates the provision of means at the welt of the stocking as a marker so that the wearer may engage the supporter with the stocking in a manner which will assure the centering of the rear seam on the leg and knowing the position where this engagement takes place and the position of the marker at a definite place on the leg, the centering of the seam in the rear of the leg is assured at all times.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which the numeral 1 designates the leg portion of a stocking to which is knitted the welt 2 and the rear seam of the stocking is designated by the numeral 3. In knitting the welt of the stocking, there is thrown in at a predetermined point an extra thread at points equidistant from the center. This thread is woven into the welt 2 for one-half the length thereof so as to produce a pair of spaced parallel strips or the like 4, as clearly shown in Figures 1, 2 and 5 of the drawing. These strips 4 are spaced at reasonable distance apart and each strip is rather narrow to produce substantially a line in the front half of the welt of the stocking, as clearly shown in Figure 5. lVhen the stocking is applied to the leg of the wearer, the two strips 4 act as guide markers, it being understood that they are on each side of the center of the stocking so that they may be brought to the center of the leg above the knee, the latter passing through the spacebetween the lines when the stocking is applied. IVhen so positioned, the supporter may be engaged in the space between the two marker lines 4, the supporter presumably dropping down the center of the leg of the wearer, and the latter then knows that the rear seam (3 is centered on the leg. These marker lines act as'a means for guiding the stocking in position when being applied to the leg and act as a guide for the engagement of the supporter with a definite place on the welt of the stocking.
This extra thread which is thrown into the machine while knitting the welt to produce the lines or strips 4 may be of the same material as that of which the welt is being knitted or of any other material desired and it may be the same color or a contrastingcolor, as may be desired. This extra thread which forms this strip is preferably of no heavier weight than the thread used for knitting the welt as it is not desired to produce any rein forcement in the welt but merely to produce a slight marking therein to act as a guide for engagement with the supporter and for the positioning of the seam. This extra thread knitted in the welt will not affect the weight of the stocking nor will it affect the elasticity thereof.
In Figure 3, I have shown a slightly modified form of the invention wherein the two strips or lines which are herein now designated by the numeral 5 tend to converge toward their lower ends. Whereas the strips design and otherwise the forms are all the same.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved marking means, the method of applying the same to use in the stocking and the application to use in practice will be readily understood and it will be seen that 'I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changesin form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from thespirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a stocking provided with a seam extending longitudinally of the rear thereof, a marker means at the frontal top portion of said stocking comprising a pair of longi- 'tudinally extending indicia defining a line along the front central portion of the stocking, said indicia converging at their lower ends toward a point on the line defined aforesaid, as and for the purposes described.
2. In a stocking provided with a seam eX- tending longitudinally of the rear thereof, marker means at the frontal top portion of said stocking comprising a pair of longitudinally extending strips knitted in the fabric and defining a line along the front or lines 4 in the first mentioned form are parallel, these strips or lines 5 in the modified form tend to converge. There is a slight space between the lower ends thereof at the lower edge of the welt.
In Figure 4, I have shown a still further modified form of the invention wherein the two guide strips or lines which are here designated by the numeral 6 combine the designs of both forms shown in Figures 2 and 3, to
. the end that these lines or markers are parallel for the greater portion of their length and near the ends thereof, said lines or strips are brought or directed inwardly toward one another tending to converge toward their lower ends. This is merely a difference in central portion of said stocking, said knitted-in strips converging at their lower ends toward a point on the line defined aforesaid, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature. JOSEPH LARGMAN.
