JOURNAL LUBRIC'ATOR Application filed October 12; 1928:'` Serial No. 312,123L- i This invention relates to lubrication and its general object is to provide an oiling device for the journals of railway equipment that retains a suicient lm of clean oil about the journal at all times without waste of oil and premature loss of its lubrication qualities.v
Another object of the invention is to provide an oiling device to be used in journal Y boxes and the like that retains oil saturated waste or packing in contacting engagement with the journal under all conditions.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an oiling device for journal boxes and the like that provides for the application of free oil to the box and includes resilient supporting means for packing or waste that is suspended to lie in the oil and engages the journal, with the result the oil is fed to the journal by capillary attraction which insures clean oil, free from grit, dirt and other foreign matter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an oiling device for journal boxes that requires very little attention other than the replenishing of the supply of oil thereto as the packing or waste will last for an indelinite period of time due to the manner of supporting the same with respect to the journal.
Another object of the invention is to provide an oiling device of the character set forth, that is extremely simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically 0 pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view taken through the journal box and showing the application of our oiling device which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
pense.; L' Figure Figuremately on line 4 4 ofFigure 2lyooking in 2; is. atop plan view ofthedevice 3 isa side elevation thereojf. l, ,A 4 is a sectional view taken approxi-` thedireetionof the arrows. f f Referring to the drawings in detail, the let.- ,terA indicates a journal box of the usualconstruction and which includes the usual packing or waste containingY space B. disposed below the journal C. The space B inthe present form of the invention is primarily designed for receiving our oiling device as well asi to act i as shown in the capacity of an oil reservoir in Figure lv of the drawings;y Our l, n
oiling device includes. a base plate 1. having a relatively large rectangular opening?,` formed centrally therein, and the plate is of ya size to tit the bottom of the boxas shown.
F ormedwith and rising from adjacent the corners of the base'platel are upright vrods 3 having coil springsv 4 surrounding the same with the end convolutions engaging the base plate and the waste or packing retainer .5 which is provided with openings to accolni, inod'ate theupright rodsf3 and is `held associatedr` therewith through the instrumentality of cotter pins, orlike fastening elements 6.
The'coilsprings 4 are under compression so asto normally urgethe waste or packing retainer to its uppermost position on the rods. The retainer 5 'is substantiallyI channel shape and has a roundedbottom 7'with outwardly opposed directed side walls 8 terminating in parallel flanges 9Y which are provided with the openings to accommodate-the rods as above set forth. The sidewalls are formed with arcuate portions above their ijuncture with the lbottom whieh's provided 'with a plurality of'slots lOarranged in *co-4 operating pairs for a pur-pose which will'be presently apparent, and the bottom` is preferably reinforcedby bridging strips 11 which are-secured to the Yunder surfaceof the bottom and portions ofthe side walls shown 1n Figure 3 of the drawings.
The slots l0 o f each pair cooperate for recelving a `quantity of packing or waste 12,
and the length to packing orV Waste is of suiiicient j be passed through the cooperating as clearly ioo slots of each pair in loop formation with the looped portion disposed in contacting engagement with the journal C While the ends of the packing or Waste extend to the bottom of the box so as to be received in oil which may be disposed in the box in any Well known manneror through the mediumofa system of pipes extending from the bottom or end of the box to a point Where oil can be conveniently applied.
From the `abovedescription and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obviousthat We have provided an oiling device that will supply clean oil to a journal under vall condi-Y tions and the packing or Waste will be disposed in contacting engagement with the journal due to the action of the coil springs in urging the retainer 5 to its uppermost position. The oil will be fed to the journal by capillary attraction, as Will be apparent, j
and the looped portion ofthe packing or Waste is spread to an extent that it will engagel a' suflicient area of the journal to properly apply the oil thereto, and this spreading is brought about by the engagement of the journal with the packing or Waste and the novel shape of the retainer 5 as clearly shown in Figure l.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages 'and novel features of our'invention will be readily apparent.
- We desire it to be understood that We may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What We claim is:
The combination vvith a journal box and a journal mounted therein, of a base plate "disposed Within the bottom of the box and having a central opening therein, rods rising from' the plate adjacent the corners thereof,
a packing retainer comprisingan elongated body of substantially U-shaped formation in 'crosss'ection having its opposed side Walls extended upwardly and outwardly in spaced concentric relation to the journal, and terminating to provide horizontal flanges having openings to receive said rods, yieldable means for supporting the retainer on the rods, the bottom of said retainer having longitudinal slots at opposite sides of the longitudinal center thereof, and reinforcing strips bridging the bottom of the retainerv and extending across said slots.
, In testimonywhereof :We aix our signa- CHARLES W. AKERS.v I WILLIAM FOSTER.
