Description
Sept. 13, 1932. c L'ENFANT. 1,877,468
CONTAINER Original Filed Feb. 5. 1926 section has opposite obliquely inclined open ends.
The device for carrying two allotments 01 cigarettes or other commodities comprises two separate actuable box-body holders 15,
made to have sliding fit between the side Walls 11 11 of the case section and to swing Or tilt between the top and bottom walls 12 and 13 thereof, upon suitable hinge means 16 16 arranged at the open ends of the bottom wall 13 of the main case section and connecting there to the bottoms 17 17 of the article holders, itbeing best notedfrom an inspection of Fig..
3 that the bottoms17 17 are thus hingedly connected intermediate their length to the bottom wall 13. In this arrangement'the'article holders are swingableor tiltable in the open ends of the case section; and when said article holders have been swung into closed position withtheir bottom wall portions 18 18' overlying the inside;surace ofthe bottom 'Wlll 13, they constitute complementary end closures for the case section and their top ends, Which are open, are covered by thetop wall 12 of the case section.
,Upon the outer faces of the corresponding side wallsl919 of each articleholder side parts-20 20 are suitably secured -having obliquely inclined edges 2121 adapted to abut against:theinclined edges 14 14 of the side walls of the casesection and thereby limit the ihward movement of the article holder to closed position Owing to the provision of the side parts 20 20, the exposed outside: faces of the articleholders will beentirely flush with the outside faces of the case 1 section when the article holders are in closed position. By this construction, When the ar ticle holders are closed as represented in Fig. 1,-no projectionsof any kind appear on the Outside surface of thecontainerstructure.
' 3 For thepurpose of:determining the limit ofthe opening movement of the article hold.
ers, I prefer to providea common flexible member 22 fixed at its central portion at 23 'tothe -top wall 12 of thecase section and having its opposite ends attached as .at 24 24 to the inner end walls 25 25 of thetw0article holders. In addition to this, I may also provide for each article holder a suitable flexible member 26 having a portion 27 secured fiat- Wise upon'the inner surface of the bottom wall 13 of the case.section and aportion 28 secured fiatwise upon the outer face of the exposed portion of the bottom wall 17.
When the container is produced from cardboard or similar material, the fieXiblemem- 1 bers 26 may be' used to reinforce the hinge.
4 connection betweenthe bottom walls 17 of that it will itself constitute the hinge connec tien on which the article holder turns. The
bottom-wall 13 of the case section. midway the article holders and the'bottom wall 13 of the case section; or it may even besmade,
for the salie of simplicity and cheapness,so
' of readily obtained.
within the spirit the length thcreof and between the regions Where the flexible member portions 2 27 are attached thereto. is provided with a finger receiving opening 29 therein throu h which the finger may be proiected upwardly to exert pressure upon the bottom walls 01: the, two article-holders for the purpose of tilting them either one at a time or both at a time into open position.
The corresponding side walls 19 19 of each ofthe article holders are by preference deeply and intermediately ont away to provide openings 307 30 in communication ith;the
open top ends, so that the cigarettes or other commodities can be readily grasped by the fingerswhenthe article holders are in Open position, For securing the article holders, When they are in closed position, to the top wall 12 of the case section, suitable means 7 nmybe-providd in the form of catch pieces 3131 applied to said top wall 12, and cooperating detent pieces 32 32 applied to the upper ends of the exposed walls 33 33 of the article holders. From an inspection of the drawing it will be seen that the article holders, irrespective ofwhether they are in open position or in closed position, always extend partway into the case section; and further that when the article holders are closed the meeting edges 21 and 14 constitute diagonal lines of separation 'Which extend from the hinge connection 16 .to points at the opposite ends 'ofthe topwalll2 of the-case section.
F rom the foregoing description considered in connection with the-accompanying draW- ing, theconstruction and variousadvantages of my invention will be-'clearlyunderstood.
*It will be apparent thatsuch a case or container may be inexpensively prodcedfrom cardboard or similarmaterial as.an original container for cigarettes orother commodities; or it may bemanufactured in more expensive form frOm wood, silver :or goldor other material;- When cldsed, the container presents a very neat and attractive appearance, and also *efiectively preserves its contents against breakage or deterioration. The contai1iercan alsobe easily and quickly manipulated and access to the contents there- While I have herein disclosed the prefer1ed emb0diment of my invention, it is to be understood that the construction ofthe parts .as exemplified in the accompanying draWing side walls reCeding from the top wall tothe bottom wall and having open ends between the top and bottom Walls, article holders arranged at said open ends and extending part way into the case section, said article holders having bottom walls and open tops, hinge means connecting the bottom Walls of the article holders at intermediate points with' the ends of the bottom wall of the caseosection, to provide for tilting the article holders to and from a position in which their open tops Will be exposed adjacent said open ends, there being an opening in the bottom wall of thccase section through which to enter a finger and exert pressure upon the bottom walls of the article holders whereby to tilt the article holders into position for exposing their open tops.
2. A container for cigarettes and the like comprising a frusto-shaped case section having side Walls receding from the top wall to the bottom wall, and have open ends between the top and bottom Walls, complemcntary article holders arranged at said open ends, havingbottom walls and open tops, and formingwith the case section a square-shaped configuration, hinge means at the end of the bottom wall of the case section connecting the bottom walls of the article holders at intermediate points with the ends of the bottom of the case section for tilting the complementary article holders in and out of the casing so that the open tops and part of the side walls of said holders are incased by the top and side walls of the case section and moved away from said Walls, respectivcly, said ar- V ticle holders forming with the frusto-shaped case section When they are tilted therein a square-shaped container.
In testimony that I daim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereto.
CHARLES LENFANT.
