. r This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vanity cases, and the primary object of the invention is to provide provided with a double faced mirror forming the closure of the rouge compartment, so that if the user desires to-apply powder, the mirror of the rouge compartment may remain closed and still one face thereof be available in applying the powder, or which, when the mirror is open the other face thereof is available for applying rouge and powder or rouge alone.
The invention further aims to provide a case of this kind in which the same preserves the same general appearance and size of compacts now in use, and which also houses the parts in a minimum of space.
The invention still further aims to provide a novel assemblage of the various parts and their relationship so as to enable the user to conveniently apply the cosmetics.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan View of the invention Figure 2 is an edge elevation;
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the two compartments closed and the case itself in position to be closed, and
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing all of the parts open.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a case is provided which has a .7 Q. top 1 and a bottom 2. The top 1 is provided with rouge compartment 3, and is hinged at 4 to the bottom 2. A double'faced mirror 5 is provided which is connected by a spring hinge 6 to the outer side of the top 1 at a point diametrically opposite the hinge 4 that connects the two members of the case. A latch 7 is provided on the bottom 2 for engagement with a keeper carried by the top 1. The mirror 5 is latched in the position of Figure 3 by a latch 8 carried by the top 1 which latch is operable to release the mirror by a finger engaging member 9 that is connected to a part of the latch and which projects outwardly from a side of the top 1 at a point between the hinges 4 and 6.
The bottom 2 is formed with a powder compartment 10, and the latter has a cover 11 which is hinged at 12 to the bottom 2, the line of hinging 12 extending at substantially right angles, to the lines of hinging 4 and 6. A latch 13 is provided on the bottom 2 diametrically opposite the hinge 12 to latch the top or cover 11 of the powder compartment in position. The top 1 is further provided with a finger engaging member 14 so as to facilitate opening of the case following release of the latch 7. The member 14, as shown in Fig. 3 is struck-out so that its resultant hollow interior provides the keeper 8.
With the parts in the position of Figure 3 it will be seen that the normally upper face 15 of the mirror 5 can be used without use of either the powder or rouge compartments, in this position the mirror and the cover 11 being closed. If it is desired to apply powder without the rouge then the mirror 5 remains in the position of Figure 3 with its normallyupper face 15 exposed, whereupon the cover 11 of the powder compartment is opened, by use of the right hand of the user, to enable the powder to be rendered accessible for the purpose of being applied. In this use of the device the compact may be held in the hand of the user as shown in Figure 3 with the top 1 uppermost. Should it be desired at the same time to apply rouge then the mirror 5 is released so that its normally underface 16 is exposed as shown in Figure 4. Due to the operating member 9 of the latch 8, being located adjacent to the thumb of the user, the member 9 can be pushed inwardly by the thumb without shifting the case in the hand, and due to the spring hinge 6, the mirror 5 will be moved outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position, the parts may be held in the left hand I i of the user with the powder compartment substantially horizontal and with the cover 11 of the compartment for powder disposed adjacent of the base of the thumb and in the may remain closed as shown in Figure 3, and
the mirror 5 opened to occupy the position of Figure 4; in whichit will be seen that the which in usin 1 osition are all in alinement as shown in Figure a which is also true of' the use in Figure 3, and that when the powder compartment is in use the cover of same extends to one side of the remaming parts which provides a device which can be conveniently and naturally held in the hand of the user.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I l. A vanity case including a bottom having aghinged top and having a powder com.- partment, a movable cover for the. powder compartmentfhinged thereto in a plane substantially at right angles'jto the :plane of hinging between the top and bottom, said top having a rouge compartment, and a double faced mirror forming a closure for the rouge compartment hinged to the top diametrically opposite and parallel to the plane of hinging between the top and bottom whereby when the top, bottom, and mirror are open same: are in alinement, and when the cover is opened same extends at right angles to said line so that a substantially L- shaped arrangement of the parts is had.
2. Avanity case including a bottom having a powder compartment, 'and'a hinged top having a rouge compartment, a hinged cover for the powdercompartment, and a hinged cover for the rouge compartment composed of a double faced mirror so that the powder compartment can be used'with one face of the mirror when the latter is closed andwherein when same is opened the other face of the mirror can be used with the rouge compartment.
3'. A vanity case lncluding a bottom having a cosmetic compartment, a movable cover for the compartment, a top hinged to the bottom and having a cosmetic compartment,
and a. double faced mirror hinged to the top and forming a closure for the compartment thereof whereby one face of the mirror can be used with the compartment of. the bottom whenthe mirror is closed and the other face of the mirror can be used with the compartment of the top when the mirror is open.
forming a closure for said compartment saidbottom having a cosmetic compartment,
a cover for said last named compartment hinged to the bottom on side thereof with the V line of hinging at substantially right anglesv to the line of hinging between the topand bottomwhereby-when all of the parts are open a substantially L-shaped arrangement thereof is presented, means to latch the mirror in position, an operating member for said latching means carried by the top and disposed on the side thereof which alines with the side of the bottom that has the cover 1 hinged thereto, and being 'spacejd'from the bottornso as tobe accessible for operation by a thumb of the user, and means whereby to' move the mlrror to openj-positlon upon re lease of the latching means thereofby said operating member. s
.6. A vanitycas'e including a bottom having a top hinged thereto provided with a cosmetic compartment, a double faced mirror forming a closure for said compartment hinged to the top diametrically opposite to the line of hinging between 'the top and bottom,said bottom having acosmetic compartment, a cover for said last named compartment hinged to the bottomon aside thereof with the line of hinging atsubstantially right angles to the line of hinging between the top and bottom, means to latch the mirror in po-' sition, operating means for said latching means carried by the top and disposed spaced from the bottom so as to be accessible forop eration by a thumb of the user, and means whereby to move the mirror too'pen position upon releaseof the latching means thereof;
In testimony whereof. I have signed my name to this specification; c v
