This invention relates to a. multiple hinge construction for casement type windows or doors. i x r The chief object of the invention is to provide a multiple'hinge for casement mounted members such as windows and doors which is so arranged that the same will permit the easement member to swing in the usual manner and, when desired, to swing in a reverse direction for exposing to the opening the exterior of the window or door.
Another feature of the invention consists in the inclusion of a locking device between the parts of the hinge which is readily detachable.
Other objects and features of the invention and the full nature thereof will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claim:
In the drawing Fig.1 is a sectional view through a casement window and frame showing the hinge invention associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the window in the reversed open position for exposing the 5 exterior of the window to the opening in the frame. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevational View of the hinge. Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on i the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. p
In the drawing 10 indicates a window frame and 11 a casement window or'sash. The window is preferably supported by two or more hinges and, since the hinges are identical, the description of one will suffice for them all. Also the invention is applied to a window for illustration only.
' The hinge includes a plate portion 12 which is preferably morticed into a recess 13 in the frame and secured in a position substantially transverse to the plane of the windowwhen closed and by suitable means such as the screws 14. Beyond the plane of the wall having the window opening, is the eye portion 15 of the plate 12. A pintle 16 is associated'with, in the present instance, the eye portions 17 of an intermediate leaf 18, the latter being reduced as at 19, the purpose of the same being set forth hereinafter. The opposite end of the intermediate leaf also terminates in spaced eyes 20 supporting a pin 21, passing through the-eye 22of an end leaf 23. The openings24: i inthe leaf 23' are soarranged that the anchorages 25 mounted therein are normally cov-o ered bythe intermediate leaf 18 which is nec essarily of a length greater than the. end leaf 23. Extending laterally from the end leaf 23 Y is a prong 26 which has a cam face portion 27 V i and a notch portion 28. The same is posito reverse the window for cleaning, repairing or painting purposes, the exterior of the window may be exposed to the window opening by lifting the window so that the weight is removed from'the leaf 23 and a slight additional elevational movement will free leaf 18 from leaf 23 except for the pivotal connection through pin 21. When thus freed from the detachable locking connection, the window may be swung about pin 21 as a pivot and thusthe exterior face of the window may be exposed to the window opening. When the window is to be normally positioned,,the window is turned upon the pivot 21 and swung into position until the catch 26 rides over the leaf 1'8 whereupon the weight of the window automatically locks the two leaves together through the catch con- 'struction by seating leaf 18 in notch 28.
By the employment of the foregoing construction, it will be apparent that no anchorages areexposed. The anchorage for leaf 12 is covered by the window when closed. The anchorage for leaf23 is covered by the leaf 18 and, even though an attempt be made to enter through the window, if the window is locked, the, forcible removal or breaking of the catch will not free the window and not expose the anchorage of leaf 23 to the window. To remove the window after it is locked requires the removal of either hinge -P 7 l The invention claimed is z A hinge structure'comprising end leaves and an intermediate leaf all of equal Width, pintles connecting the ends of said intermediate leaf with adjacent ends of said end leaves, said leaves adapted to fold upon each other with their longitudinal edges flush, a locking prong rigid with and projecting at right angles from one longitudinal edge of one of said end leaves, and the adjacent edge of said intermediate leaf out, awayiolreeeive g said prong and interlock therewith vvhen the said end and intermediate leavesiare laid jflat.
upon each other.
