IGLEI-IEART,' OF BOONTON, AND Airman I This invention relates to boxes and box sectional" wirebound boxes and box blanks. Among other objects, the invention isintended to provide an improved cleat construction for boxes which will strengthen the tions of the box. j
vOther objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
one illustrative embodiment of the invenbox against relative shifting of adj acent section is shown in the accompanying drawings in which: v j
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an open top wirebound box embodying the invention.
" Fig. 2 is a top plan View on a smaller scale of a box blank which, when folded, forms the four sides of the box of Fig. 1.

cleat frame at the bottom of the box and an exterior cleat frame at the top of the box to bottom section (not shown) may be supported by or secured to the interior cleats 2, and
a cover section (not shown) may be applied and secured to one or more of the exterior cleats 3.

Such exteriorcleats,how-
ever, do notoverlap at the box cemented;
as a result, the side sections at] the top of the box frequently shift inwardly under strain. Topreventsuch inward shifting of the side sections atthe top of the box, exterior cleats 8in the present'invention are so formed and dimensioned thatthey maybefreadily folded from the flat into -box'form,' and, when folded, will overlap at'tlieboxf cornerslAs shown; in the drawings, the endsfof the" exterior cleats 3 arecut diagonally as at 5;the

I when folded, provides overlapping and con eral I sections and the endsof said cleats being cut diagonally to the lateral edges of the section of side tacting exterior cleat ends to resist any tendency of adjacent side sections to shift relatively.
It will be'understood that the invention is not to be limited to the particular embodiment thereofshown herein for illustration and that all of the features ofthe invention need not be used conj ointly, as the invention -maybe variously embodied and features thereof may be used 1n different combinations and sub-combinations as defined in the subjoined claims. 7
' The word box, as used in the specification and claims is intended to include crates.
I claim:
I 1. A foldable box blank comprising a plurality 'of' sections of side material connected with flexible binders 'and positioned to tension the binders when the blankis folded into box form, and an exteriorcleat securedto each section of side material; the cleats of thesevbeing in line with each other material and extending beyond the lateral edges ofithe side material.
2. A'wir bound 'box comprising in combination a plurality of sections of side material connectedby flexible binders securedthereto, and an exterior cleat securedto and extendi-ing-beyond the lateral edges of each section of sidematerial; the cleats of the several sections being in'the same horizontal plane and theends of the cleats being cut diagonally n) the perpendicular of the box corner,--where- 'zline with each other and having substantially parallel ends cut at an angle of substantially V to the perpendicular of the cleat side, and each cleatextending beyond either edge of its section-adistancesubstantially equaltothe I thickness of the cleat, whereby whenthe blank v is folded into box form, portions of adjacent cleat ends will overlap and contact.
4. A foldable boxblank comprising a pluequal to the each other and diagonally tothe perpendicular of the cleat sides and extending beyond. the edges of the side material.
6. A wirebound foldable box blank comprising. a plurality of sections of side material spacedapart a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the side material; binding wire secured to and connecting the several sections; and an exterior cleat secured to each section and extendingbeyond the lateral edges of the section a-distance-substantially equalto the thicknessof the cleat; the-several cleats being in line and having their ends cut diagonally to the line of the "lateral'edges of the sections of side material 7 whereby portions of adjacent cleat ends overlap in the} flat blank and whenthe blank is folded into box form.
-7. A wirebound foldable box blank comprising a plurality of sections of sidematerial spaced apart adistance substantially thickness of the side material; binding wire secured to and connecting the several sections; and an exteriorcleat secured to each section and'extending beyondthe lateral edges of the section a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the cleat; the several cleats having diagonally but ends in overlapping relationship. v
8. A Wirebound foldable box blank comprisingflaplurality of separate sections of side material connected together by flexible binders secured thereto; and a separate cleat secured to each section, the cleatsof the several sections being in line with each other and In testimony'whereof, we have signedour having diagonally cut ends overlappin'g each other.
