DANIEL W. WIGG-IN, OF YAR-MOUTH, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO ABBOTT COMPANY, OF YARMOU'TH, MAINE, A CORPORATION OF MAINE MOCCASIN CONSTRUCTION Application filed. October 21, 1930. Serial No. 490,233.
In the improvement of moccasins of socalled true moccasin type, my present invention has certain definite advantages. To provide extra protection for the vamp at its point of greatest wear and by the same means provide a tight connection with the sole so that no water or snow can enter between the sole and the tread of the vamp, my concept includes certain departures from 7 previous structures.
As illustrative of my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing a characteristic embodiment. In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a general view of the fore part of a moccasin according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22,.Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view on the fore part of a modified form, and
Fig.4 is a fragmentary section on the line 4-4, Fig. 3.
In the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I have indicated at 1 a vamp of usual construction and at 2 the usual toe piece. The vamp and toe piece members 1 and 2 are seamed together by any one of the various seams used in sewing moccasins. The extra or additional vamp 3 which covers the sides of the regular vamp at its lower edge instead of passing under the foot like the ordinary vamp it turns outwardly and is stitched to the sole of the moccasin at the seam 4, thus making a waterproof joint at the sides of the moccasin. At its upper edge it is included in the seam 6. I
This construction not only gives a mossasin with an additional tight seam at the edge of the sole but provides an extra layer of leather along the edge of the foot, thus giving more protection and an extra thickness of material which increases the waterproofness and wear along the areas exposed to contact in walkmg.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4. the extra or additional vamp 7 does not extend quite up to the seam 8 which unites the usual vamp 1 and toe piece 2 but is stitched to the side of vamp 1 as at 9. At its lower edge it turns outwardly and is stitched to the sole 5 as at 4:. This form of outer vamp 7 reduces the thickness of the seam as made necessary less leather.
The parts may be cemented to eachother over given areas or may be stitched or both cement and stitching may be used. In both constructions the intermediate sole 5 is shown as stitched to the bottom of the vamp 1 as at 10.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In footwear of the moccasin type a toe piece structure to overlie substantially the top of the foot, a vamp proper to embrace substantially the sides and bottom of the foot, a sole beneath the tread of the vamp, an outer vamp element secured at its lower edge to the sole and overlying the sides of the vamp proper, and a common seam uniting the upper edges of the vamp proper and the vamp element with eachother and with the toe piece.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.-
DANIEL W. WIGGIN.
