IMPROVEMENTIN CARPENTERS GAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,112, dated February 6, 1877; application filed November 2, 1876.

To all whom it may con-cem Be it known that I, CHARLES 0. FARCIoT, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented.

Certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpenters Gage; and I do hereby declare that the following is -a full, clear, and exact .description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a carpenters gage, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is an end View; and Fig. 4 a section on line x w, Fig. 2.

A represents a tubular stock or handle, in one end of which is inserted or otherwise fastened a spindle, B. This spindle projects a short distance beyond the end of the handle, and is so arranged as to leave an annular space between it and the inside of the handle for a suitable distance. On this spindle is placed a sleeve, G, the outer end of which forms a hollow tenon, and upon this tenou is welded, or otherwise fastened, a thin wheel, D. A pin, lb, passed through the end of the spindle, prevents the sleeve from coming off.

On the rod or the handle A is further placed a wheel, E, provided with an elongated hub, G, having exterior screw-threads, as shown. This hub is slightly tapering, and slotted longitudinally from the outer end inward for a suitable distance, to form, as it were, two or more spring jaws, and upon said hub is screwed a nut, H. The wheel E is readily adjusted to any point desired on the handle, and then fastened by screwing up the nut H on the hub, which compresses the jaws thereof, so as to clamp on the handle. Then, by means of the wheel D, marks may be made at the same distance from the edge.

This gage is perfectly true, and cannot get out of order. It is simple, cheap, and durable.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
