at 13, to the upper end of a second toggle element 14, the latter at its lower end being pivotally secured, as at 15, to the lower portion of the bed plate or frame 1.
A pair of springs as 16, only one of which is shown, is secured to the head-carrying lever to the rear of the fulcrum 7, the lower ends of the springs being secured to the base frame 7 1 as is usual in presses of this same general character. These springs tend to swing the head carrying lever so as to move the head from the position shown inFigure 2 to that shown in Figure 1. In other words, they tend 7 to maintain the head in its elevated open position I As shown in the drawings. the lower ele ment: 14 of the toggle has a lateral extension 17 towhich is pivotally secured the link 18, which in turn connects the toggle with a foot lever 19. The foot lever and link 18 form in effect a secondary toggle member cooperating with the element 14 of the" main toggle to close the press when the foot lever is depressed. Lever 19 is fulcrumed on a shaft 20 mounted on bracket 21 secured to the press frame, the forward arm of the lever-being relatively short and projecting beyond the front of the press frame but a short distance.
Also mounted for pivotal movement about the shaft 20 and supported by the bracket 21 is a treadle member 22 having a forked end portion 23 which straddles the bracket, and a web portion 24 overlying the forward arm or the foot lever. A bumper 25 ofrubber or 7 other suitable material is interposed between the treadle and the foot lever, being'secured to a boss 26 on the foot lever in the form illus- Y trated in the drawings.
It is obvious that with the above construe tion depression of the treadle will lower the portion of the foot lever chine, is aconstantly rotating electric motor 28, the shaft 'whereof is interconnected through a flexible coupling of any approved type, designated by 29, with a shaft 30, which latter is supported in suitable bearings formed in or carried by a frame or housing 31 likewise supported upona bracket 32 secured to the bed frame 1.
Shaft has secured to it a worm 33 which is constantly in mesh with a worm gear 34, the hub whereof is splined or keyed to the outwardlyextending hub 35of a, bevel or sungear 36. Said gear is supported upon a sleeve bearing 37 which finds its support upon a shaft 38, the latter being supported in suitable bearings in the housing. Sun-gear 36 meshes with planetary gears or pinions 39 -mounted upon spindles 40 extending outwardly from a spindle frame 41 journaled for rotation upon the shaft 38.
Secured tothe outer extended ends of the spindles '40 is a ring-shaped frame or member '43 preferably formed in two parts, as shown in Figure 4, and bolted together so as to embrace the outer ends of the spindles.
The outerface of the ring-shaped member or fra'me43 is provided with a series of teeth 44 equally spaced thereabout and underlying a vertically disposed bolt or pin 45 mounted for reciprocation in abearing formed in the upper part of the housing 31. The lower end of the bolt .is slightly tapered so-that it may passbetween the teeth 44 and hold the frame 43 against rotation. Y Themeans for actuating this bolt will be later described.

As will be. appreciated, when the frame member 43 is locked against rotation, motion will'be imparted to the crank and pit-man through the gearing above described. That is to say from-worm 33, to worm wheel 34, gear 7 36, planetary pinions or gears 39 (which then power mechanism beheld ineffective until the head. is closed either manually or by the foot leverand'to that end ofthe cam member 47 is employed to prevent the throwing in-of the '7 arresting bolt or pin 45.

Theupper end of the-stem 54 passes through the forked end of the lever 57 and a washer a spring '60'which underlies the same and is seated in a socket formed in the housing. 31. A stop arm 61 formed upon the lever 57 carries an adjustable stop screw 61a whichcoacts, as will be seen upon reference to Figure 5, with the housing to prevent the lever from being thrown upwardly beyond a predetermined point.

As will be seen upon reference to Figures 1 and-2, more particularly, roller 70 cooperates with the outeracam surface 72 while the roller 71 is designed tooperate with the internal camway or face 7 3. The parts are so adjusted and arranged that when the head is in its elevated, or partially elevated position, or anything short 'of "the preliminary contacting position, roller 7 0 will rest upon the cam surface 72 and depression of the arm 68 and consequently rocking of the lever 66 is inhibited.
In Figure 1 the press is shown as fully open in which position it will be seen that the roller 7 O rests-upon the camf72 and hence ing-the straightened position; this-being permittedby the fact that the combined crank disk and cam may be rotated notwithstanding the motor is in operation as the sun-gear 36 merelyrotates with reference to the plan etary gears and causes the latter to :move' their supporting frame or spider around the other suns-gear. It will be noted that When thetoggle is in its fully closed position the center lines of the crank, the crank connection 48 and the pivotal connection 53 are not in alignment. They will be lockedin this position so as to maintain the required pressure by entrance of the roller 71 into the depression or cut away portion 74 of the inner scam surface 73.
'- By this arrangement no trouble ensues in unlocking the press as might be the case if the center lines of the. connection all are lined up. What is claimed is: n I 1. In a garment press, the combinationof a pair of relatively movable pressing elements, one of said members being freely movable toward and from the other by the operator; a constantly moving power applyingmechanism; crank means lnterposed between saidmechanisin and said last-named pressing element for applying heavy pressure between the pressing elements; means for effecting an interconnection between said pressure applying means and the power mechanism when and only when the pressing elements have been brought to pressing orclosed position; operator controlled means for actuating said interconnecting'means; and lock out means rotatable with said crank means and positioned by the movement of the head r'or' preventing actuation of said operator controlled means until said elements are in pressing relation;

In a garment press, the combination of a fixed pressing element; a movable pressing elements free to be moved toward. and from the fixed element into and out of pressing relation therewith by the operator; constantly operating power means; crank means for applying pressure to the movable pressing element; a connection between said lastnamed means and the power means, said connection being normally disconnected from the power means; means for connecting the power means to the pressure applying means;
operator controlled means for actuating said connecting means; and. means rotatable with said crankmeans and 'positionedby movement ofs'aidmovablepressing element to prevent actuation of said operator'controlled meansuntil said elements areiin pressing relation.

In a garment press, the combination of a fixed pressing element; a movable pressing element free to be moved toward and from the fixed element into and out of pressing relation therewith by the operator; constantly operating power beans; means for applying pressure to the movable pressing element; a connection between said lastnamed means and the power means, said con nection being normally disconnected from the pow-er means; means for connecting the power'means to theconnectionaforesaid and thereby efiecting operation'of the pressure applying means; operator controlled means for actuating said connecting'means; and a rotatable stop device interconnected with and movable by the connection between the power applying means andthe power means preventing operation of the last named operator controlled means until the movable pressing element has been-closed upon the fixed press- 5.111 agarment press, the combination of a fixed pressing element; a second pressing element mounted for free movement toward and from the'latter by the operator; toggle mechanism associated with said second pressa fixed pressing element; a movable. pressing element free to be moved toward and from the other by the operator; power means; crank means interposed between the latter and the movable pressing element to: eflect heavy pressure between the pressing elements, said two means being normally disconnected; manually actuated locking means interposed between said two means for connecting said two means; and means rotatable with said crankmeans and positionedlby movement of the movable pressing element for preventing actuation of. the latter until the movable pressing element is brought toclosed position. 1

In a garment press, the combination of a fixed pressing element; a movable pressing element free to be moved into and out of pressing relation tothe other by the operator a constantly moving power means crank means interposed between the movable pressingmemb'er and the power means for applying heavy pressure to said movable pressing member, said crank means being normally disconnected from the power 1neans; means for producing an interlock between the power means and the crank means aforesaid; operator controlled means for actuating said interlocking means; means rotatable with said crank means for preventing actuation of said operator controlled means until the pressing elements are brought together; means normally tending to disconnect the power means. and the crank means; and means on said rotatable means for maintaining the-connection between the power means and crank means until maximum heavy pressure has been effeet-ed and immediately thereafter releasing the connecting means thereby to allow heavy pressure to be maintained for any desired period. i

In a garment press, the combination of A a fixed pressing element; a movable pressing element; afoot lever for moving said movableelement into cooperative relation with said fixed element; power mechanism for moving said movable element; and a treadle member for actuating said foot lever, said member overlying said lever and being mounted forupwa-rd relative movement with respect to said foot lever! g 10. In a: garment press, the combination of a fixed pressing'element; am'ovable press ing element; a toggle mechanism for. moving said movable element to closed position; a
foot lever connected to said toggle mechanismga pow-er mechanism'connected to said toggle mechanism; .and a treadle member for actuating said foot lever, said member overand lyingsaid lever andheingmounted for upward relative movement with respect to said foot lever.

In a garment press, the combination of a fixed pressing element; a movable pressing elementmovable-by the operator toward and from the fixed element; a ower train associated with the movable element for producing heavy pressure therethroughl afterthe press is closed by, the operator; control-means for the power train embodying a rotatablecam a manually actuated interlock'for the power train; andfmeans for rotating said cam comprising a connection between the cam. and said movable pressing element, said cam serving to prevent actuation of. the interlock until said cam is shifted by the operationof closing the head, said cam likewise permitting withdrawal whenthe press is exerting heavy pressure. 7

In a garment press, the combination of a buck; ahead; constantly driven planetary gearing; atoggle mechanism; connections be tween said toggle and the shaft supporting one of the sun-gears of said gearing for straightening the toggle ;means under control of the operator for arresting planetary movement ofthe planetary gears of the gearing and thereby causing rotation of the aforesaid sun-gear; and means controlledas to position by an operator controlled movement of the head toward the buck for preventing actuation of said arresting means until the head is'brought to .closed position. 7

In a garment press, thecombination of a buck; a head; constantly driven planetary gearing; a toggle mechanism; "connections between said toggle and the shaft supporting one of the sun-gears of said gearing for straightening the-toggle means under control of the operator for arresting planetary movement of the planetary gears of the gearing and thereby causing rotation of the aforesaid suln-gear; and a cam rotatable with said shaft, said cam being positioned by operator of the interlock said. arresting means until the head is brought to closed position. i

two cam ways formed upon the disk one ex teriorly thereof and the other int'erio-rly there of, the former cooperating with the lower end of the last-named arm and the latter cooperating with the lower end of the aforesaid lever,'the cams being so formed and positionedthat operation of the handle and a consequent depression of the bolt to arrest the planetary movement of the planetary gears is prevented until the crank disk has been rotated by a closing movement of the head and the interior cam being so formed as to prevent the entrance of the lower end of the lever into cooperation therewith until the parts assume the relationship just mentioned, said interior cam being likewise formed with an outwardly extending seat or recess which permits elevation of the handle and a'consequent retraction of the bolt to permit the parts to come to rest while the toggle is in that position where heavy pressure is applied to the head. p

In a garment press, the combination of afixed pressing element; a movable pressing element; a toggle mechanism for moving said movable element into pressing relation with the fixed element; a power mechanism .for actuating said toggle mechanism; a second toggle mechanism-including a foot lever also adapted to'actuate said first mentioned togmounted on said foot lever for upward relative movement therewith.

In a garment press, the combination of a frame; a fixed pressing element; a movable pressing element; a toggle mechanism for moving said movable element into pressing relation with the fixed element; a power mechanism for actuating said toggle mechanism; a second toggle mechanism also adapted to actuate said first mentioned toggle mechanism, said second toggle mechanism comprising a pair of links pivoted to each other, one of said links being pivoted intermediate its ends to said frame and projecting forwardly of the frame; and a treadle member pivoted to the forward end of said last mentioned link and cooperating therewith to depress the link, said member overlying said link and being movable upwardly relative to said link.
20. In a garment press, the combination of a buck; a head; constantly moving power means a toggle mechanism difi'erential gearmg interposed between sald power means and said toggle mechanism; means under control of the operator for locking one of the gears of said difierential gearing to transmit movement from said power means to said toggle mechanism; and means rotatable with one of said gears and controlled by the position of said head for preventing actuation of said locking means until the head is brought to closed position.
