The present invention relates to improvements in adjustable fasteners especially designed for Welders hoods, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an adjustable fastener for a band in a welda ers hood that accommodates the band to various headsizes. The head gear snugly embraces the head of the Welder, and isl de# signed to hold the hood portionY in position relative to the welders eyes.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds, and the'novel features will be pointed Aout in the claim hereto annexed. l f
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part Yof this.V
In carrying out my invention I make useV of a standard hood indicated generally at 1, and having the front face 2 thereof formed with an opening 3 at thelevel of the oper# ators eyes. A glare shield 4 is swingably secured to the hood as at 5, and the shield is Y adapted toV be moved intoV open position by means of a chin actuated mechanism designated by the num-eral 6. The hood is fash- Y ioned with side portions 7 and .8 which eX-V tend rearwardly from the face 2 in slightly diverging relation with 1 respect to each other. The hood is pivotally secured, to `a head gear 9 at 10 in such a manner las vto u allow the hood to be held in active position as shown in Figure 1, or to be moved into a position overlying the welders head.
The parts thus far described form no part of the present invention, except insofar as theyV coope'ratefwithr the parts now to be set forth.` C *n u The headfgearis fashionedwith astrap 11 that is adapted toencircle the' wel'ders' head around thek temple portions with the ends 12"`and713`of the strap larranged in overlappingfrelation, and adj'ustably secured together fr-by-k fastening mea-nsllf as hereinafterdescribed. 'i f. The portion ofthe 'strap' extending across the `forehead and the sides of theoperators ff headis preferably lined 'with av pad indicated *at 15,' and shownV in section y.inl Figurel." The `strap,..inturn'has a transverse arc-shaped Aband 16 rigidly secured thereto, *the klatter extending-Hover the welders head and limit ing thedownward'movement of the strap#y A Plateli'keimemberIW isfrivetedfto lthe i' this member ris provided with lugs 18 having end 13 ofthe strap `as shown in Figure 6, andy i ends 19 projecting towardeach .other from -j opposite sides of. the member and forming guides for they end 12. Ears 20 are struck from the member 17 and carry pin 21 to which a pawl 22 1s swingably secured. A channel member 23 is attached tolthe end 12 as at 'i' 24`with the flanges. 25 projecting outwardly and serrated so as to present teeth 26. .The
channel is guided beneaththe pawl 22, seel y so The pawl From, the foregoing description of i the .90
various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The end 12 of the strap 11 isr introduced between the guiding lugs 19 in overlying relation' with the .end 13. The teethv on the ianges 25 permit thepawl to ride thereover kwhen the sizey of the strap 11 is reduced, butprevent the `strap from kincreasing in`-head size. vItis of course understood that the operator can adjust the strap to anydesire'd head size byg-s,
merely releasing the pavvl 22 from the teeth on the channel.
The hood is adjusted on the Welders head in the usual manner, and the glare shield 4 may be swung into open position by a chin movement in order to allow the Welder to View his Work, or the entire hood assembly may be moved into a position above the Welders head. The head gear snugly embraces the head, and the strap Il is adjustable so as to permit the same to be readily and conveniently adjusted to different head sizes.
While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, it should be understood that the same is susceptible to various changes, and I reserve the right to employ such changes as may come Within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
An adjustable fastener comprising a plate having guide lugs and a pivot pin, a pawl carried by the pin, a coiled spring mounted on the pin and having one end bearing against the pawl and the other end bearing against the plate with its end portion inclined away from the plate at an angle, a second plate, a channel-shaped member with serrations in its edges secured to the second plate, said second plate being slidably received by the 'first plate and guide lugs, the inclined spring end being received in the channel, and said pawl yieldingly engaging with the serrations.
