IMPROVEMENT m FIRE-PLACES.
' Specification-forming part ofLetters Patent No. 186,390, dated January 16, 1877; application filed Y June 27, 1876. y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. WATSON, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia,
in Fire-Places; and do hereby declare that the ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fire-places; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of certain attachments to a fire-place, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the Figure 1 is a front perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical, section of the same through the line as m, Fig. l.
A represents the front, B B the sides, and G the back, of an ordinary fire-place. D represents a front plate insertedin the sides B B of the fire-place, and resting on the hearth .E. G is atop plate inserted in the sides and back of the fire-place, and having near its front edge, on the under side, a groove to fit on the upper edge of the front plate D. In the center, at the back edge of the top plate G, is a collar or connection, H, for the attachment of the smoke-pipe I, that extends up into the chimney. The top plate G is further provided with any suitable number-of stove-holes, with covers a a, as shown. Thefront plate D is provided at the bottom with draft-openings h h, and has also three hinged doors, J, K, and- L. The door J is a long one, and isused for the admittance of fuel. The door K opens into an oven, M, formed on or attached to the inner side of the front plate D, and the door L opens into an additional fire-space to increase the heat on the oven, and cause the heat to circulate around the entire oven. 1) b are grate-bars, arranged between the front plate D and the back wall Got the fire-place.
This invention is especially designed for use in the country, where wood is mainly used as fuel, and where fire-places are common. By the addition of the plates D and G as constructed to the ordinary fire-place, a range is formed which will not only save fuel, but also give out more heat.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by f Letters Patent, is-
stove-holes a, and the front plate D, provided with thedoors J K L and oven M, all sub stantially as and for the forth. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I purposes herein set have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of June, 1876.
HEN RY F. WATSON.
