My invention relates to an improved construction of removable handle for use with pots, pans, kettles, and similar articles, where it may be desirable to have a substantial handle or handles for the article when itis being moved from one position to another, and where it is also desirable to remove the handle or handles when the article is not A being moved. My improved construction is particularly adapted to the handling of hot articles, and vessels of any description containing hot contents whether liquid or solid. My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing a preferred embodiment thereof, in

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, my improved handle construction consists of a body portion 10 which is preferably made from sheet metal bent into a channel conformation consisting of a back wall 10a and substantially parallel walls 10?) extending from the back W wall. At one end of the body portion, the 39 walls 10?) are of reduced width and provided on their edges with teeth 11 for engagement with the article to which the handle may be applied, and the outer end of the wall 10a of p the body portion, is preferably bent outwardly as indicated at 12 to facilitate engagement with the article to be moved by the device. A aw member 13, preferably of sheet metal and formed similarly to the body portion 10, is mounted between the walls 10?) of the body portion, and pivotally connected with said walls by a rod 14 extending through the body portion 10 and the jaw 13, and held in place preferably by riveting. The outer end of the jaw 13 is provided with side walls of reduced width having toothed edges as indicated at 15, the width of this portion of the jaw member 13 being preferably somewhat less than the distance between the teeth 11 on the body portion 10, to insure positive engagement of the jaw member 13 and the body portion 10, with any article with which the handle may be used. It will be noted that the channel formation of the body portion 10 and also of the jaw member 13, extends to the outer end of each of these parts, thus reinforcing each of said parts so that heavy loads may be securely held and moved by the handle without the possibility of springing or bending said parts which would render the clamping action of the handle so insecure.
The other end of the body portion 10 is provided with a pivot rod 16 similar to the pivot rod 1 1 and similarly held in place, which rod 16 extends through the side walls of an operating member 17, also preferably formed of sheet metal of channel cross section, the opposite side walls of which are provided with slots 17a through which the rod 16 passes. The adjacent ends of the jaw memher 13 and the operating member 17 have their side walls overlapping each other as indicated, and connected by a pivot rod 18 similar to the pivot rod 1 1 and similarly held in the jaw member 13. The portion of the jaw member 13 adjacent the oivot rod 18 is preferably of reduced width to permit the riveted ends of the rod 18 to move freely between the side walls 106 of the body portion 10, without frictional engagement therewith. 8 Similarly, the portion of the operating menr her 1'? adjacent the pivot rod 18 is preferably of reduced width to enter freely between the side walls of the jaw member 13, and yet to permit the side walls of the operating member 17 to be adjacent the inner surfaces of the side walls 10?) adjacent the pivot rod 16. The operating member 17 is continued outside of the pivot rod 16, and preferably formed into a tube 1??) of cylindrical conformation, upon which a handhold 19 is tightly fitted. While the handhold 19 may be constructed of any desired material, I lind that hard wood is well adapted to this purpose, since it is relatively light and may be readily turned to the shape desired. he handhold 19 is preferably provided at its end that is nearer the pivot rod 16, with a flange portion 19a which reinforces that endof the handhold and also prevents the hand of the user from slipping towards the article being handled by the device. The outer end of the jaw member 13 is preferably turned outwards slightly as indicated at 13a to facilitate the engagement of the handle with articles to be handled thereby. The portion of the operating member 17 in the handhold 19 is preferably at an angle with the portion of the member 17 engaging the pivot rods 16 and 18, to insure that when the handle is in place upon the article to be moved from one location to another, he forces exerted upon the handle will insure a rigid clamping action of the jaw member 13 towards the body portion 10, as a result of which no thought on the part of the operator is required in handling the article engaged by the device, as to whether the handle is in secure engag ment with the article. When it is desired to remove the handle from the article, all that is required is to lift the outer end of the handhold 19 with the article on any support upon which it may have been placed, which action at once positively moves the jaw member 13 away from the body member and permits the ready removal of the handle from the article.
In some cases, it is desirable to use the handle with round rods, for example the bails of pots and kettles, to facilitate which, the side walls of the body portion 10 between the teeth 11 and the pivot rod 14, have notches 20 formed in them in which the rods or ba ls are securely held by the aw member 13 when lifting effort is exerted on the handhold 19. It will be noted that the outer edges of the notches 20 are flat sided and substantially perpendicular to the wall 10a, and that the teeth of the jaw 13 extend over said notches, which securely retain the rod or bail and prevent it from slippin from the notches 20.
While I have shown my invention in the particular embodiment above described, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to this exact construction as I may employ equivalents known to the art at the time of the filing of this application without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
l/Vhat I claim is:
1. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a sheet metal body portion of channel formation, a sheet metal jaw member of channel formation between opposite walls of said body portion, the backs of said channel formations being away from each other, a first pivot rod extending through the mid portion of said jaw member and through said opposite walls of said body portion, a sheetmetal operating member of channel formation also between said opposite walls of said body portion and having its back away from the back of said body portion, the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member overlapping each other, a second pivot rod extending through the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member, said second rod being shorter than the distance between the side walls of said body portion, a third pivot rod extending through the side walls of said body portion and of said operating member, there being slots for said third rod in one of said parts connected thereby, and a handhold carried by the outer end of said operating member, said body portion and said jaw member having co-operating portions on their channel edges for engagement with an article to be handled, and the side walls of said body portion between said first and said third pivot rods overlapping the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member for all positions of said jaw member.
2. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a sheet metal body portion of channel formation, a sheet metal jaw mem ber of channel formation between opposite Walls of said body portion, the backs of said channel formations being away from each other, a pivot rod extending through the mid portion of said jaw member and through said opposite walls of said body portion, a sheet metal operating member of channel formation also between said opposite Walls of said body portion and having its back away from the back of said body portion, the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member overlapping each other, a second pivot rod extending through the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member, said second rod being shorter than the distance between the side walls of said body portion, a third pivot rod extending through the side walls of said body portion and of said operating member, there being slots for said third rod in one of said parts connected thereby, and a handhold carried by the outer end of said operating member, said body portion and said jaw member having cooperating portions on their channel edges for engagement with an article to be handled, the outer end of said operating member being tubular to carry said handhold.
3. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a sheet metal body portion of channel formation, a sheet metal jaw member of channel formation between opposite walls of said body portion, the backs of said channel formations being away from each other, a pivot rod extending through the mid portion of said aw member and through said opposite walls of said body portion, a sheet metal operating member of channel formation also between said opposite walls of said body portion and having its back away from the back of said body portion, the adjacent ends of the sidewalls of said jaw member and of said operating member overlapping each other, a second pivot rod extending through the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member, said second rod being shorter than the distance between the side walls of said body portion, a third pivot rod extending through the side walls of said body portion and of said operating member, there being slots for said third rod in one of said parts connected thereby, and a handhold carried by the outer end of said operating member, said body portion and said jaw member having co-operating portions on their channel edges for engagement with an article to be handled, said handhold being at an oblique angle with a plane through said second and said third pivot rods.
4. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a sheet metal body portion of channel formation, a sheet metal jaw member of channel formation bet-ween opposite walls of said body portion, the backs of said channel formations being away from each other, a pivot rod extending through the mid portion of said jaw member and through said opposite walls of said body portion, a sheet n etal operating member of channel formation also between said opposite walls of said body portion and havin its back away from the back of said body portion, the adjacent ends ofthe sidewalls of said jawmember and of said operating member overlapping each other, a second pivot rod extending through the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member, said second rod being shorter than the distance between the side walls of said body portion, a third pivot rod extending through the side walls of said body portion and of said operating member, there being slots for saidthird rod in one of said parts connected thereby, and a handhold carried by the outer end of said operating member, said body portion and said aw member having co-operating toothed portions on their channel edges for engagement with an article to be handled, the toothed portion of said jaw member being narrower than the width between the teeth on said body portion.
5. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a sheet metal body portion of channel formation, a sheet metal jaw member of channel formation between opposite walls of said body portion, the backs of said channel formations being away from each other, a pivot rod extending through the mid portion of said member and through said opposite walls of said body portion, a sheet metal operating member of channel formation also between said opposite walls of said body portion and having its back away from the back of said body portion, the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member overlapping each other, a second pivot rod extending through the adjacent ends of the side walls of said jaw member and of said operating member, said second rod being shorter than the distance between the side walls of said body portion, a third pivot rod extending through the side walls of said body portion and of said operating member, there being slots for said third rod in one of said parts connected thereby, and a handhold carried by the outer end of said operating member, said body portion and said jaw member having co-operating portions on their channel edges for engagement with an article to be handled, the outer end of said body portion being flanged outwardly to engage articles to be moved by the handle.
6. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a body portion, a jaw member and an operating member pivotally connected together, said body portion and said jaw member having cooperating clamping portions consisting of channel formations opening towards each other, the edges of the flanges of said channel formations having teeth for engagement with articles handled by the device, the toothed flanges of said jaw member being narrower than the toothed flanges of said body portion to enter between the latter toothed flanges.
7. In a handle of the class described, the combination of a body portion, a jaw member and an operating member pivotally connected together, said body portion and said jaw member having cooperating clamping portions consisting of channel formations opening towards each other, the channel flanges of the body portion having notches in their edges for receiving rods to be handled by the device, and the channel flanges of said jaw member having teeth for engaging and holding rods in said notches, the toothed flanges of said jaw member being narrower than the notched flanges of said body portion to enter between said notched flanges.
