Description

E. E. FREY UMBRELLA June 14, 1932.
Original Filed April 1, 1929 fi A 4 A TTOR Patentecl June 14, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ELMER E. FREY, O]? LOS ANGELES, GALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR T0 EDWARD' F.LEONARD A1\TD JOI-IIN' P. MEEH'AII, BOTH OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
UMBRELLA Applcation filed Aprl 1, 1929, Serial No. 351,636.
This nvention relates te unbrellas, and an object is to provlde an mproved structure and arrangement 01: parts designed for -addng rigdty to the frame and for renderng the constructon of umbrellas more economcal than in other types now in use.
In the consderation of this invention, reference s had to my pending applcat1on for patent on umbrellas, filed Nov. 14, 1928, S61. N o. 319,355.
An object of the present invention s to provide un improved form of structure over thai; shown in my said pendng applicaton for patent. The improvements of the pres ent nvention prrnarily eomprehend the pyovslon 01 an mproved cype of geat or o1nt f01 attachng the braces to the ribs.
Other and more detaled objects 01 the invention may appear as the descrpton progresses.
In the accompanyng dmwng,
F g. l s an enlarged fragmentary section of an umbrellaconstructed in accordance with my nventon.
Fig. 2 is a p1an vlew of the movable sleeve wth which the rbs are connected prior to the formation of the sockets in whch che braces are supported.
F ig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the saune.
Fig. 4 is a transverse secton of one of the rib and brace connecto-ns on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fgs. 5 and 6 are, respectively, views of the same on lines 5-5 and 6-6 of Fig. 4.
As shown in the drawing, A represents the center pole, whch has a reduced extension A1 at the top thereof end a shoulder A2 on which a rib supporting disk B is adapted to be held. The disk B is provided wth a central circular portion B1 adapted to be secured to the porton A1 of the pale by means of brads or screws B2. The member B s intal- 1y formed as shown in Fig. 2, wth a plurality of 1ps as at 1, 1 etc., the correspon dng sdes of which are straight, as at 2, wvh1le the other sdes are cui: on dagonal lnes 3 and are provided with grooves 4 ntermediate the adjacent lips.
As shown in Fig. 1, the lips 1 are adepted to be bent downwardly at B3, B8 etc., to

form sockets for pvotally receivng portions, C1, C1 etc., of the rbs C, C. The sockets B3 are substantally 'elongated, as are also the portions C1, se as to provide substantially long bearin gs for the inner ends of the ribs.
The cover D of the umbrella is fitted snug- 1y over the member B and s held in positin thereon by means of a ferrule E, which has a flange El overlying tne nner portion of che cover and a central porton E2 adapted to be pressed nto frictonal engzgement wth the extension Al 01 the po1e. The c0ver D, as usual, is sutably attached at ts enter perip'hery D1 to the ends 01 che ribs C by means of clips D2.
A sleeve F is slldably mounted on the body 01 the pole A and s provded at its upper end With a pluralty of sockets F1, F1 etc., forrned to correspond substantially to t he soekes B3 of the disk B, as shewn in F ig. 2. Said s1eeve also has a skrt F2 Which embraces the body of the pole A, and the 10Wer edge F3 thereof is adapted to rest upon a latch G, Wheh is fixed to the pole E01 holding the umbrella extended for use. The latch G, as in slmlm devlces, serves to hold the umbrella in extended position by reason of its engagemen-t with the edge F 3 of the sleeve.
The sleeve F is pivotal1y connected with the rbs C by means of a plurality 0f braces H, etc., whch correspond in nu1nber to the sckets F1 on the sleeve and the 1ibs C. The braces H are provided with rght angularly bent bearng portons H1 at their inner ends, which are held in the sockets F1 and correspondingly formed bearing portons H2, which are adapted te pvotally engage supporting devces J, J etc., carred in fixed postion on the ribs C.
The geats J are formed 0f thin sheet metal W1h a central circular porton J 1 tightly engaging and embracng the 1ib C in each case end flat extensons J 2 and JS which are riveted together at J4. By reference to F ig. 5, it Wll be noted that the portions J2 and J3 are spread apart at J6 and J7 and are apertured to pvotally receive the portons H2 of the braces H. The central porton J 1 is provided wth a right angularly bent lug J 8 which is cut away from said central portion and is dsposed in spaced relation to the portion J6 so that t Wi1l engage the portons H3 of the braces H immediately adjacent che bearing portions H2.
The structure just described provides a suitable bearng for the braces H at the rbs and at the same time prevents the dsplacemeni: of the braces from the sockets in the members J. By reason of the connection of. the ribs C end braces H with the members B and F respectvely, and the connection of the braces H with the members C, as shown and descrbed, a substantially rigd structure s provided for the umbrella frame Whch prevents the warpng and twsting of the rbs.
Other aclvantages of my mproved structure Will readily appeal to those skilled in the art.
What I clam is:
1. In 2111 umbrella, in combnaton wth a rb and a brace adapted to be pvotally attached thereto, of an attachng device frctionally supported on che rb and provided with a central portion embracng the rb, and
-extensione therefrom provided wth central bearng portons spaced apart, end another extcnson therefrom spaced from the bearing porton, said brace havng a righi: an-- gularly bent porton pivotally held in said bearng portons end adapfied to engage said other extenson for preventing the dsplacement of the brace from the bearing.
2. In un umbrella, in combnaton with a rib, and brace pvotally attached thereto, an attuching device fixedly supported on sad rib formed of sheet metal and provided with an elongated central porton embracng sad rb, and extended end portions attached together, transversely spaced bearings beng provided centrally in said end portions and inwardly of the rib, 21 lug bent outwardly from sad central portion end spaced from said bearings, end a right angular porton formed on sad rib pivotally engaging sad bearings and prevented from displacement therefrom by engagement with said 1ug.
