Patented June 7; 1 932 UNITED STATES PATENT rFicE MAURICE LEVY, OF LARGHMONT, NEW YORK CONTAINER AND/ OR APPLIGATOR Application filed December 4, 1929. Serial No. 411,462.
Another object of my invention is to pro-' duce a device for this purpose having a closure which can be manlpulated by means associated with the case.
Another object of my invention is to pro duce a device for this purpose having a closure comprising a plurality of bendable leaves or blades which are bent to form a closure when suitably manipulated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a container having bendable closure means which can be bent into or out of operative position.
Other objects of my invention are set forth in the following description and drawing,
which illustrate the invention as applied to It is to be understood that a lipstick holder.
the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended to generally explain the same, without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, the lipstick being shown in operative position, and the closure device being shown in inoperative position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view, the closure device being shown in operative position.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a top view'lof Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5'-5 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation-of the closure or cover device, shown detached from the rest of the device.
Fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
The various parts of the device can be made of metal or any other suitable material.
In this embodiment the shell 1 is provided 50 with two slots 2 at its inner end.
The closure device comprises a series of bendable and resilient blades or leaves 4, having intermediate spaces 4a, and connected at their inner ends to a ring 20 located within the outer shell 1, vwhen the parts are assembled. The ring 20 is connected at the zones 20a by solder or other suitable means, to an outer slide ring 3. Hence, the annular space between the rings 20 and 3 is divided into two spaces, and the lower spaced ends of shell 1 have a longitudinal sliding fit between the zones 20a. Said zones are aligned with the slots 2.
An inner shell 10 is located Within leaves 4 and these parts may have a close frictional fit so that they can be readily assembled. The inner shell 10 is open at both ends and it has an enlargement 11 at its inner end, to which the adjacent end of the outer sleeve 1 may be connected by solder, or by a frictional fit.
The device is provided with means for protruding and retracting the lipstick L. This may have its inner end connected to a metal cap in the well known manner, and said cap has a pin 16, which fits in a spiral groove 15 of a sleeve 14. Said sleeve 14 has a firm frictional fit within the inner shell 10. The pin 16 does not project out of slot 15. The pin 16 also passes through a longitudinal slot 17 in a turnable sleeve 7, having an enlargement 8 which serves as a bearing therefor at the outer end of member 14. Said turnable sleeve 7 also has a knurled head 5 at the inner end thereof.
The parts all fit snugly into each other so that they have a frictional fit, but can be readily separated. to permit the introduction of refills.
When the parts are assembled, the outer shell 1 cannot turn with respect to the inner shell 10.
In order to close the outer open end of shell 1, it is merely necessary to push the sleeve or ring 3 outwardly. The tops of the bendable blades 4 are bent towards each other by the laterally bent ends of the shell 1, so that said tops are caused to converge and meet as shown in Fig. 2.
In order to open the outer end of shell 1 j and to cause the lipstick to protrude, it is merely necessary to push the sleeve or ring 3 inwardly and to then manipulate the member 5. When the ring 3 is pushed inwardly, the ends of the resilient blades are free to separate. When the ring 5 is turned, the lipstick is moved outwardly.
It would not be departing from the invention if the ends of the blades 4 were caused to overlap, or if the edges of said blades were provided withnon-metallic material sufficiently soft, in order to provide an air-tight closure, or a substantially air-tight closure.
Likewise, the means for manipulating the lipstick could be varied at will without departing from the invention, as the principal feature of the invention is the closure device.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made without departing from its spirit.
It will be noted that the closure comprises a plurality of separate members 4 which are moved laterally towards and away from each other, as the device is operated. The outer end of shell 1 provides deflecting means to.
cause said closure members to move towards each other.
I claim:
1. A container comprising an outer member havin an end opening, an inner slide member s idably located within said outer member, separated and laterally movable closure members connected to said inner slide .member, the wall of said end opening being shaped to force said laterally movable members towards each other in order to close said opening when said inner member is slid outwardly towards said end opening, said laterally movable closure members having their outer ends projecting beyond said end opening when said closure members close said opening.
2. A container having an end opening, a,
closure for said opening, said closure comrisin a plurality of laterally movable members w ich are located within said container, means adapted to actuate said members to and-fro in a longitudinal direction, and means adapted to cause said members to move laterally towards each other to close said end opening when said members are moved longitudinally in a direction towards said end opening.
8. A container comprising an outer shell and an inner shell, said outer shall having an outer open end whose wall is inwardly and laterally directed, and a slidable member located intermediate said shells and having a closure which consists of plurality of separate bendable members adapted to be bent towards each other when they are outwardly moved to contact with said outer end wall of said outer shell, said bendable members then forming the closure for said open end.
a. A container compr sing a shell having an open outer end provided with a wall which is inwardly and laterally tapered, and an outor member located on the outside of said shell and slidable with respect thereto in the direction of the axis of said shell, and an inner member located on the inside of said shell and connected to said outer member through an opening in said shell, said inner member having a closure which consists of plurality of bendable and spaced members associated therewith, said members being adapted to be bent towards each 'other when they are outwardly moved against said inwardly and laterally tapered end, said bendable members then forming the closure for said open end.
5. A container comprising means adapted to protrude and to retract ,a mass of solid material located therein, and a closure device comprising a series of bendable and longitudinally movable members located adjacent from their outer ends, so that said common means can be actuated to simultaneously actuate said bendable members, said outer ends being shaped to form a closure when they are bent towards each other, said bendable members being located within said container and being adapted to protrude from the open end thereof.
7 A container device comprising an outer shell having a pair of longitudinal recesses in its inner end, an inner shell, an inner ring longitudinally slidable on the inner wall of said inner shell, an outer ring slidably mounted on the outer wall of said outer shell and connected to said inner ring through said longitudinal recesses, said outer shell having an outer open end provided with an inwardly and laterally tapered wall, spaced bendable members connected to said inner ring and having their outer ends shaped to form a closure for the end of said outer shell when said outer ends are bent towards each other, said inwardly and laterally tapered wall being adapted to deflect the outer ends of said bendable members towards'each other when said bendable members are moved in sliding relationship with said wall.
8. A container having an opening at one end thereof, and a closure for said opening, said closure consisting ofseparated closure members which are movable towards and away from each other in a direction lateral to the longitudinal axis of said cotnainer, said members being normally separated from each other so that they are normally in the inoperative position, and means associated with said members and adapted to move them towards each other in order to close said opening, said closure members being resilient blades.
a In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
