This invention consistsin the novel construction and arrangement of parts herelnafter describcd, dellneated in the acc'ompan ing drawing,.andparticularly pointed out 1n that portion of this instrument wherein pate entable novelty is claimed for certam and peculiar features of the apparatus, it being" understood that, within the scope of what hereinafter thus is claimed, diverse chan es in the form, proportions, size and minor etails of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit of, or sacrificing any of the details of the invention. i
In describing the inventionin erence is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein I have illustrated embodiments of my invention, and, wherein like charactera of reference, designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and'inwhich Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of applicants invention as applied to a motion picture film reel and is taken on line 1-1 of Fl g. 2, and Fig. 2 is also a plan'view of the same taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional fragmental view taken on line 3-3.of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same taken on line 44of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a part sectional part plan view of the same taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged d an, refsectional view of invention.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2,3, 4 and 5, reel 1- comprises hub 2 having cylindrical poiti'on 4 onto which a film is initially Wound, and lugs 3-3 arranged to pass through and clamp flanges 5-5 onto said hub. Also clamped between said flanges is spindle tube 6 arranged to support the reel in'known manner when a film isto bewound thereon.
Flanges 5-5 comprise a center, or disk portion .7 having orifices 88 arranged'to receive lugs 33, and radiating from which are spokes 99 terminating in annular rim 10 re-inforcing, or rolled peripheral having edge 11.

The clamping members 12-12 are stamped in flanges 55 before assembly onto hub2, the forming thereof leaving a three sIded orifice, as 16, said members when formed, being angularly disposed inwardly whereby, and when the-flanges are assembled onto hub'2, the film clamping portions 1313 mg member whereby clamping portion 13 may be moved awayjfroin stop 15 under tensided orifices 1818 are primarily formed in flanges 55 during stamping operation thereof, whercafter the stationary end 19, of clamping member 17, is secured preferably by spot welds, as 2020, to the body of flange 5, said clamping members being initially formed whereby, after attachment to said flanges, the film clamping portions 21-21 will impinge on the stop faces 15-15 similarly as described in connection with clamping members 12l 2.
Operation When a film as 22 is to be wound onto a reel as 1, said reel is mounted onto a film winding machine of known form without respect to direction of rotation of said reel. The operator thereafter inserts the end of the film-22 against face 4 of hub 2 whereupon the edges 23 of said film will restrain the clamping portions 13-13 outwardly away from the stop faces 15-15 and to the dotted position shown in Fig. 3. The reel is usually initially rotated slowly by hand for the first few revolutions whereby the several clamping portions 13-13 will engage the edges 23 of said film during several initial convolutions thereof, in this manner firmly and accurately allocating the starting end of said film, whereby it will also be uniformly wound into the winding space 21 between flanges 55 during the winding operation.
\Vhereas the clamping members as 17-17 are shown as having the fixed ends 19 secured to the exterior of surface of flanges 5-5, they may be secured to the inner surface 26 thereof without interfering with the operation of winding the film onto the reel. It will be noted that the inner surface 26 is removed from the guiding plane for the edge 23 of the film 22, this plane being established by the several convex surfaces 2525 formed on flanges 55.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In combination, a motion picture film band of predetermined width and a reel therefor, the reel comprising a core and side walls and projections opposite one another at the ends of the core and spaced apart at their ends nearer the core b a distance less than said width and inclinec away from one another, the space between their outer ends being greater than said width.
2. A reel for supporting motion picture film in coiled form thereon, the reel having a cylindrical hub member and flange members secured to each end thereof whereby an annular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film may be wound,
resilient clamping members formed from the body of the flange positioned to engage resiliently the edge of the film as the starting end thereof is inserted into the annular space during the operation of winding the film thereinto.
A reel for supporting motion picture film in coiled form thereon, the reel having a cylindrical hub member and flange members secured to each end thereof whereby an annular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film may be wound, longitudinal resilient clamping members supported by the flange positioned whereby the edges of the film are clampably engaged as the starting end of the film is inserted into the annular space during the operation of winding the film upon the reel.
4. A reel for supporting motion picture film in coiled form thereon, the reel having a cylindrical hub member and flange members secured to each end thereof whereby an annular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film may be Wound, of resilient clamping members formed from the body of the flange positioned to engage resiliently the edges of the film as the starting end thereof is inserted into the annular space during the operation of winding the film upon the reel.
. 5. A reel for supporting motion picture film in coiled form thereon, the reel having a cylindrical hub member and flange members secured to each end thereof whereby an annular space is formed therebetween into which a motion icture film may be wound, radially disposed elongated resilient clamping members the radially outermost ends of which are rigidly attached to the body of the flanges and the radiall innermostends of which are free and resillently biased inward.- ly of the annular winding space whereby the edges of the film will be clampably engaged thereby as the starting end thereof is inserted into the annular space during-the operation of winding the film upon the reel.
6. A reel for supporting motion picture film in coiled form thereon, the reel having a cylindrical hub member and flange niembers secured to each end thereof whereby an annular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film'may be wound, radially disposed elongated resilient clamping members the radially outermost ends of which are formed integral with the body of the flanges and the radially innermost ends of which are free and resiliently biased inwardly of the annular wind-ing space whereby the edges of the film will be clampablyannular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film may be wound, radially disposed elongated clamping members supported by the reel structure, and
clamping'portions formed thereon arranged to engage resiliently the edges of the film as the starting end thereof is inserted into the annular space during the operation of winding the film upon the reel.
9. A reel designed for use with motion picture film of a standard, predetermined Width and comprising a core and flanges thereon, the flanges being spaced by a distance greater than said standard width, and projections restricting the space adjacent the core to a width less than said standard width.
10. A reel designed for use with motion picture film of a standard, predetermined width and comprising a core and flanges thereon, the flanges being spaced by a distance greater than said standard width, there being in the space adjacent at least one flange and adjacent the core separated projections restricting the space at separated points adjacent the j core to a width less than said standard width.
11. A reel designed vfor use with motion picture film of a standard predetermined width and havin a core and side flanges, and projections a 'jacent' the core and spaced apart at their ends nearer the core by a distance less than such standard. width and gradually inclined away from one another, their outer ends being separated by a distance greater than such width.
12. A reel designed for use with motion picture film of a standard, predetermined width and having a core and side flanges and a series of opposed projections adjacent the core, the pairs of opposed projections being spaced apart at their ends nearer the core by a distance less than said width and being inclined away from one another, their outer ends being separated by a distance greater than such width.
13. A reel designed for use with motion picture film of a standard predetermined width and having a core and side flanges thereon, the flanges being spaced apart b a. distance greater than said standard wi th, and projections positioned opposite one another at the ends of the core and restricting the space between them to a'dimension less than said standard width.
14. A reel designed for use with motion picture film of a standard predetermined width and having a core and side flanges thereon, the flanges being spaced apart by a distance greater than said standard width,
and a series of separated projections in regis tration opposite one another at the ends of the core and restricting the space between the pairs of opposed registering pro'ections to a dimension less than said standar width.
15. In combination, a motion picture film band of predetermined width and a reel therefor, the reel comprising a core and side walls, the side walls being separated by a distance greater than said width, and profilm in-coiled form thereon, the reel aving a cylindrical hub member and flange members secured to each end thereof whereby an annular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film may be wound, a clamping member supported by 'at least one of said flanges and positioned to engage resiliently the edge of the film as the starting end thereof is inserted into the annular space during the operation of winding the film thereinto.
17. A reel for supporting motion picture film in coiled form thereon, the reel having a cylindrical hub member and flange members secured to each end thereof whereby an-an nular space is formed therebetween into which a motion picture film may be wound, radially disposed clamping members supported by the reel structure and extending past the periphery of the hub member, the clamping portions formed thereon to engage resiliently the edges of the film as the starting end thereof is inserted into the annular space during the operation of winding the film upon the reel.
18. In a film reel the combination of parallel side plates and a hollow hub extending therebetween, said hub having a portion thereof spaced from one of said plates and forming an opening, and spring-means adapted for frictional edgewise engagement with a film end on said hub and extending into said opening.
