JESSE CHANDLER, OF WARSAW, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 186,079, dated January 9, 1877; application filed September 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE CHANDLER, of Warsaw, county of Hancock, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Weather-Strip, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is aside elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on line 00 w in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 y in Fig. 1.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
The object of my improvementis to provide a means for excluding cold and rain from windows and doors.
A is a strip of metal or wood, which is movably attached to the door by the staples c, and is of such length as to fit loosely between the jambs of the door. I) is a hook formed on one end of the strip A, which is capable of engaging with a spring-hook, B. The strip A is placed in a rabbet at the lower edge of the door, and is of sufficient width to drop into the rabbet in the threshold when the door is closed.
The spring-catch B consists of a casting having a nib for engaging with the hook b on the strip, and a boss, around which the spring 01 passes, and through which the screw passes that attaches it to the door. E is a staple or pin driven into the door-jamb, which presses the hook as the door closes. F is a block of iron attached to the door-sill, for raising the strip as it passes over the threshold. 0n opening the door the strip A strikes the block F, which throws it upward until the catch 12 engages the catch B, by which it is retained until the door closes, when the catch B strikes the staple E, liberating the catch 1), allowing the strip A to fall into the rabbet in the doorsill.
In Fig. 3, D is a strip of metal, that is locked into a strip,f, forming a hinge. The strip f is attached to the jamb of a door or window, and the strip D pressed against the door or window by springs c, that rest in shallow holes bored in the jamb.
This strip is equally applicable to doors and windows, and efl'ectually closes the space between the rail of the door or window-sash and the jamb, while it permits the door to open or close, and the window to slide.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the movable strip A, having a hook, I), at one end, of the hook B, having a hub with the spring d, constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
