The object of my invention is to simplify, cheapen, and improve the construction, arrangement, and attachment of metal strips of this class, and to provide for the remov al of either sash from the window frame without detaching the Weather stripping.
To this and other ends, my invention in its present preferred embodiment comprises in its entirety, a fixed folded interlocking strip or stop member having fastening plates secured to both the face and side of the parting strip or stop, and a sliding folded sash member having its fold sliding on the outside of the fixed member and having a fastening plate secured to the outside of the sash.
My invention also comprises a recessed molding to cover the outside sliding sash member and inside fixed member.
My invention also comprises interlocking strip members made in separable upper and lower sections so that the lower section can be removed to permit the removal of the sashes without detaching the weather strips.
In order that my invention may be fu ly understood, I shall first describe in detail the mode in which I at present prefer to carry this invention into practice.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings forming part of this application for patent, in which like parts are designated by the same numbers in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a window with vertically sliding sections weatherstripped according to my invention.
Figures 2 and 3 show alternative forms of the weather strip members.
Figure 4 is a sectional elevation on the line 4-4, Figure 1.
In the drawings, 5. designates the window frame, 6 the sliding upper sash, 7 the sliding lower sash, 8 the outside window stop, and 9 the parting strip.
I prefer to make my metal weather strip 1929. Serial No. 352,293.
as shown in Figures 1, 2, and 4, of a sash member 10 and parting companion and interlocking strip or stop member 11.
The sash member 10 is formed of sheet metal bent to form a straight longitudinal fastening plate 12 and a fold 13 ofi'set at 14 from the fastening plate and having its side members l5 and 16 parallel in cross-section to the fastening plate.
The companion strip or stop member 11 is formed o-f'sheet metal with a longitudinal fastening plate 17 a fold 18 whose member 19 is a continuation in cross-section of the fastening plate 17, the fold 18 being adapted to fit closely and slide lengthwise in the fold 13 of the sash member 10, and a fastening plate 20 bent at right angles outward from the member 18 of the fold which is parallel to the member 19.
To apply this weather strip to the window, the lower sash 7 is formed with a countersink 21 in which the fastening plate 12 of the sash member is countersunk and fastened as by a nail flush with the outside of the sash, so that the offset fold 13 will rest against the outside of the sash.
The fasteningplate l7 ofthe parting strip and stop members 11 is fixed in a recess 22 between the parting strip or stop as the case may be and the corresponding sash, and the angled fastening plate 20' is fastened as by a nail to the outside of the respective sash, the fold 18 of this strip member fitting and sliding within the fold 13 of the sash member.
A recessed molding 23 is also preferably secured to the sash 7 to cover and receive in its recess 24 the complete Weatherstrip, and increase the security against the ingress of cold air or egress of the inside warm air.
To permit the removal and replacement of a the sashes without detaching this weatherstrip, I make the parting strip 9 and its attached strip member 11, as shown in Figure 4, in separable upper and lower sections, the upper sections of which are preferably fixed in place, and the lower sections of which are removable, the joints 25 and 26 between the upper and lower sections of the interlocking strip members being arcuate and spaced as shown to permit the lower sections to be easily removed laterally after raising the lower sash, both sashes being then lowered for removal after detaching the inner stop 27.
It is evident that the specific details of construction and arrangement herein shown and described may be greatly varied Without departing from the boundaries of my invention as defined by the following claims.
It will be seen from the above thatwthevsash member 10 is only anchored at one end, leaving the side 15 free to movebecause of the flexibility of the strip. By-this means, if there is any inequality or unevenness in the strip 11, the encompassing loop 10 Will expand and contract as the Window slides along the loop ll and will not bind excessively as itwould were both endsof the loop 10 anchored in thesa'me Way as the ends of the loop 11.
