IMPROVEMENT IN TRANSPORTATION PACKAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent NO. I 85,525, dated December 19, 1876; application filed May 22, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, NATHANIEL HALSTED, of Scranton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Transportation Package, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide a package in which butter, lard, and other substances may be transported safely in glass, earthenware, and other jars subject to breakage, and at the same time may be kept on ice in warm weather.

The invention consists of a case having by preference compartments for a number of jars, but may consist of one only, in which springs are contrived to support the bottom and sides of the jars, so as to relieve them of the shocks to which the case is subject in transportation, and when more than one compartment is employed the partitions between them are constructed with openings through the bottom for the circulation of cold air from ice to be carried in one of the compartments for keeping the butter cool. The springs may be of any approved kind and arrangement, but probably rubber will be best for the bottom and elastic Wood bars for the sides.

Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved transportation package, taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a section on the line y y. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is a section of a glass or earthenware package, such as I propose to use.

A represents a strong box of wood, separated into compartments suitable for holding one jar each by partitions B, and having rubber or other springs D on the bottoms, also similar springs E on the sides, or coiled springs G, flat ones H, or elastic bars of wood I, or other springs, to hold the jars J so as to cushion the shocks and protect the jars from breaking. K represents an opening through the partitions at the bottom to allow cold air to circulate from one of the compartments to the others, for keeping the jars cool in warm weather by ice carried in one, in which a jar may be carried or not, as preferred.

The wood packages in which butter is carried impart the taste of wood to the butter, however clean and sweet they may be, but after use one or more times they get foul and are entirely unfit for further use, whereas glass and other like substances remain in good condition indefinitely, and are, therefore, much more desirable for use. The partitions may be made of slats, or bars if preferred.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A transportation package for butter and other like substances, consisting of a case, A, containing one or more compartments, having springs on the bottom and sides, and ajar, J, of glass, porcelain, or other mineral ware, substantially as specified.
