Description
A. H. BELL.
SNAP-HOOKS.
No. 185,475. Patented Dec.19, 1876.
INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS THE GRAPH C 00 N Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AZEL H. BELL, OF BELLE PLAINE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,475, dated December 19, 1876; application filed October 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AZEL H. BELL, of Belle Plaine, in the county of Benton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figores of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is arepresentation of perspective view of my snap-hook closed, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same open.
This invention relates to snap-hooks for hitching-straps and other purposes; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a leather hitching-strap, which passes through an opening or slot, B, in the base-plate O of metal hook D. Said hook and plate are constructed solidly in one piece. E designates a supplemental protecting-hook, which curves in the opposite direction to the curve of hook D, so that the upper curved parts ofsaid hooks D E lie side by side when employed as a fastening. Protecting supplemental hook E, when so employed, forms with main hook D a complete inclosing loop, leaving no opening for the withdrawal of hitching-ring F, (shown in the drawings as held by my fastening.) Hook E is pivoted by its lower end to baseplate 0, so that it may be turned down sidewise for the purpose of allowing said hooks and strap to be withdrawn from said hitchingring. Said pivoted supplemental hook is prevented from turning too far by a stop pin or stud, G, on plate 0 of main hook D.
The above-described parts 0 D E G, taken together, constitute my improved snap-hook, which may be applied to many other uses besides that hereinbefore set forth. It constitutes a very secure fastening, but one which may readily be opened by hand. It is cheap and easily manufactured, dispenses springs, and has but one pivoted part, which is prevented from turning too far for convenient operation.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved snap-hook, having the pivoted hook E, fixed hook I), base-plate O, and stop-pin G, all combined and constructed for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
AZEL H. BELL. Witnesses:
STACEY J. AFFORD, HENRY A. TYRREL.
