Unrrnn STATES PATENT @rrroa AMOS W. COATES, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO. V
IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,077, dated December 5,1876, application filed October 13, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS W. OOATES, of Alliance, in the county of Sta k and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scissors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side view of the scissors when Fig. 2 is a side view of the same when open.
My invention relates to an improvement inscissors designed more particularly for the use of little girls in cutting out their little quiltpatches, doll-babies, 850.; and it consists in constructing the two blades with two terminal bulbs or guards, which, while permitting the perfect closing and free cutting action of the scissors to the end, also form a guard, Whether the scissors be open or shut, which prevents accidental injury to the child,
and enables her to use the scissors with perfeet safety to the eyes and' body.
In the drawing, A represents a pair of scissors constructed according to my invention, with the two permanent terminal guards B B, which are hemispherical in shape, so that, when closed, the guard is of a spherical or bulbous form. These guards are attached to the ends of the scissors, so as to leave one or or both of the cutting-edges projecting slightly above the flat inner faces of the guards, to
their uses, to little children of tender years, I
without the danger of running the points into themselves or falling on-the same. 7
It is obvious that the improvement which has been thus described as being intended more particularly for little girls may also be usefully employed by adults in the form of pocket-scissors.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a pair of scissors having upon the ends of their blades terminal bulbs or guards, one or both of whose inner or adjacent faces are recessed to permit the perfect closing of the scissors and their free cutting action to the ends of the blades, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
AMOS WALLACE GOATES.
