ITALY THROTTLE ANIO IGNITION CONTROL Application filed April 7, 1931, Serial No. 528,382, and in Italy April 18, 1930.
"necessity of acting on the gas feed in such manner as to enable gradual variations in the number of turns of the englne, while the 1gnition control is set once, when the minimum number of turns of the engine is exceeded.
Automatic ignition controls known heretofore are not largely employed as pilots generally prefer to have the engine wholly under their own control moreover, in aircraft engines which have relatively low revolution speeds these devices do not always work satisfactorily or they require frequent adjustments. I
This invention refers to a control device acting, through the operation of a lever, at the same time on the throttle valve of the carburetter and on the ignition, said two controls being always effected in a relation. to each other which can be determined at will. The lever operated by the pilot is connected to the throttle valve operating means and, when displaced, said lever acts with a determined transmission ratio on a driven member connected with the ignition control. In case the driven member reaches the end of its stroke before the operating lever, it is held immovable while the lever and the throttle operating means can complete their stroke.
The accompanying drawings show by way of example a construction of the improved control device. 7
Figure 1 is a cross section and Figures 2 and 3 are two elevations thereof showing the operating lever in its end positions, respectively.
The device according to this invention comprises a bed plate 1 on which a spindle 2 is rotatably mounted, said spindle carrying at one end a plate 3 provided with an operating handle 4. Under the plate 3 a second plate 5 is arranged on which a pivot 6 is rigidly mounted.
The plate 1 is provided with a pivot 7 on which a third plate 8 is rotatably mounted. The plate 8 is provided with a knob 9 for acting with a suitable transmissionratio on the ignition. The plate 8 isprovided front of the rotatable plate 3 with a notch 10* re.- ceiving the pivot 6 of the plate 5 and with a sector-shaped cut 11 adapted to embrace the periphery of the plate 3 in certain conditions.
l The working of the device is as follows The handle 4 (Fig. 2). is displaced and while the plate 3 rotates through an angle 0c the pivot The ratio between the movements of the plate 8 controlling the-ignition and those of the plate 3 of the gas feed can of course be other than that shown above, as it depends substantially upon the respective position of the axes of rotation of the plates 3 and 8 and upon the distances ofthese latter from the pivot 6 and its notch.
lVhat I claim is:
1. Throttle and ignition control comprising a bed plate, two parallel pivots secured to said bed plate, a disk rotatably mounted on each of said pivots, one of said disks being adapted to control the throttle valve of an internal combustion engine, while the other disk is adapted to control the ignition of said engine, a notch and toothcoupling between said two disks such that the motion from one disk to the other is transmitted with a predetermined ratio and an operating lever secured to the disk controlling the throttle.
2. .Throttle; and ignition control comprising a bed plate, two parallel pins secured to said bed plate, a disk rotatably mounted on each of said pins, one of said disks being; adapted to operate the throttle valve of an internal combustion engine, while the other disk is adapted to control the ignition ofsaid engine, a tooth carried by the first mentioned disk and adapted to engage'a notch on the -10( second mentioned disk so that this latter follows the former disk on a first portion of its stroke, stop surfaces for holding the second disk in adjusted position during the further 5 angular displacement of the first disk and an operating lever secured to the first disk.
In'testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name.
G-UGLIELMO .PIRINOLI. V
