This invention relates .to ;a tool for attaching eye sets in doll heads or the like, the same being in the nature. of an improvement upon the tool shown and described in my pending application Serial No. 102,146, now issued as Patent No. 1,621,073, dated March An'obi ect of the present invention is to-provide a. tool by means of which the eye sets 10 may be more quickly, accurately and efficiently attached within the doll head.

A more detailed object is to provide improved means for holding the eye set releasably connected with the tool. a

A further detailed object is to provide means for cO-operating with parts of the eye set to insure centralization of the eye set within the doll head.

A further detailed object is to provide suit- 2 able adjustable means by which to determine the extent of movement of the-movable parts of the tool.

A. further detailed object is to provide an adjustable guide part by which to insure uniform positioning of the eye sets within sueceeding doll heads.

Other objects and more or less specific than those referred to above will be in part obvious and in part pointed Out'in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.

The levers Gr and H project beyond the pivot 1 and at their forward ends each is provided with an upstanding stud 5 thereon adapted to engage-moving parts of the eye set to move said parts in a manner which will be described. 1 Between the pivot 1 and the Outer ends 'of' the levers said levers are preferably suitably bowed or bent so as tobetter enable introduction of the tool and attached eye sets into the neck portion of a doll head 6, as more fully referred to in the co-pending application above mentioned. The rear ends of the levers are bowed outwardly and thence turned inwardlyto provide end surfaces 7-7 arranged to rub against opposite sides ofa wedge shaped cam 8. The cam 8 is formed upon a lever 9 which .is pivotally mounted as at- 10 upon .the base L andadapted upon swinging the lever, to be thrust forwardly between the ends 7-7. of the levers for forcing said ends apart. The levers are crossed at pivot 1 after the manner of an ordinary pair of tongs so that the spreading apart of the rear ends produces simultaneous spreading apart of the studs. at the forward endsa t i A suitable tension spring as 11 is connected between the levers for holding the rear ends 7 always against the opposite surfaces of cam 8 and for thus moving the studs 5 -5 toward each otherwhenever the cam is swung backwardly.

Carried by the base L, within a threaded bore 12 thereof is a screw 13 disposed so that its end 14; is adapted to be engaged by the cam 8 for limiting the forward movement of the cam at a point determined by. the position of the screw, and hence for limiting the distance to which the studs 55 may b moved apart by the cam.-

The eye set, which the tool thus far described is for handling, consists of a body portion 15 upon which the eyes 16-16 are movably supported. The body portion is intended to extend horizontally across the interior of the doll head, and intermediate its length is provided with a pair of arms 17 which project forwardly from the body portion. and directly support the cross rod 18 at the opposite ends of which the eyes 1616 are mounted. The arms 17 are provided with aligned bearings at 19 within which the cross rod is received.

The body portion or carrier 15 is of chan- ,nel shape in cross section and within the channel thereof is arranged a. pair of attachthe doll head the attaching members are of course in their relatively inner positions, and their movement outwardly for driving the tangs into embedded relation within the cheek portions of the doll head is not performed until after the eye set has been moved into a proper and correct position within the doll head.

The fit of the attaching members within the channelof body 15 is sufficiently tight so that the attaching members will haveno movement except by the application of considerable force, such as the present tool is designed to apply For this purpose each of the attaching members is preferably formed with an aperture as 23 therein arranged toreceive the studs 5 -5 of the tool.

In order to insure that the spreading apart of the studs 5 5 of the tool, by means of cam 8, will produce a uniform amount of move ment of each of the attaching members with respect to the body 15 the tool is provided with a third stud as 24 adapted to engage within an opening 25 of the body 15. This third stud is relatively stationary, being car-- ried upon a forwardly projecting part 26 of the plate 2 of the tool. In the instance illustrated it stands in a position internist iate the studs li -5, and the opening 25 of the body is likewise provided intermediate the openings 2323 so that the stud 2% is adapted to eased back with respectto the eye sockets of the doll head co-incident with movement of the tangs into the material of the doll head,

The forward ends ofthe tool levers, and of the central stud carrying part 26 are arranged on a common plane and thus constitute a suitable support platform upon which the body portion 15 may rest with the several studs projecting through their respective receiving openings.

In the instance illustrated this retaining member consists ot a length of spring wire as 29 extending alon the length of plate 2 and connected at its rear end to thescrews 3 and 4 so that its forward end is free to move as a spring clamp to hold the eye set yieldingly pressed against the platform provided by the stud carrying parts of the tool.

When placing an eye set in position upon the tool it is simply necessary to introduce the body 15 beneath the forward projecting end portion as 30 of the retaining member, and flex said member upwardly suiiiciently to permit application of the body in position over the studs whereupon the retaining memof the studs will clear their respective openings .and'the eye set be thereby-discharged, the retaining member being meanwhile forced upwardly to permit thedischarge.

Of course the eye set may include the usual weight as 31 by which. to cause oscillation of the eyes in the usual manner after-their attachment into thedollhead", and it may be here mentioned that the part 26 of plate 2 in the structure illustrated provides an appropriate' support upon w'hichthe weight may rest, as clearly seen in Fig. 1 during the time while the eye set .is being positioned within the doll head. i

In operation, the tool being fastened firmly ing the lever 9 the spring 11 will draw the levers together and discharge the eye set from the lugs of the tool so that the head with the assembled eye set may be readily withdrawn'from the tool.

It will be understood of course that if desired the tool may be inserted into the head instead of applying the head over the tool, but this is a matter immaterial.

It will be understood that eye sets of different sizes, for doll headsof difi'erent sizes, may be attached by this tool. The provision of the adjusting screw 13 for determining the extent to which the studs 5-5 may be thrust apart by the cam 8 makes it possible to utilize the same identical tool for diflerent sizedoll heads and eye sets. If the doll heads being operated upon be relatively small; then the screw 13 will be adjusted to preventa too great separation of the movablestuds, whereas ifthe doll heads which-are being operated upon be relativelylarger then the screw 13 will be set back to permit a greater separation of the studs, the separation being in any event in proportion to the distance apart'of the opposite side walls or check portions of'the doll heads being operatedfupon'.

count ithas been found desirable to provide means to permit thebodily movement of the 1 eye set longitudinally of the tool while at the same time preventing any'bodily movement laterally of the tool. Various means may be devised for this purpose but as a simple expedient the drawing, Fig. 4, shows I the central stud 24 of the tool to be carried effectually prevent any movement of the eye set transversely of the tool.

In Fig. 5 a modified means is illustrated by which to accomplish the same result, the means in this instance being formed essentially upon the eye set rather than upon the tool. It consists merely in making the opening 25 of the eye set in the form of aslot placed so asto extend transversely-of the body 15 and hence longitudinally of the length of the tool. The stud 24 may in this case be made stationary upon the part 26 of the tool, and any movement-of the eye set in a direction longitudinally of the tool will be accommodated .by. relative movement of the stud 24 along the length of the slot 25, the side .walls of the slot however at all times engaging'the stud sufficiently snugly to prevent any appreciable movement of the eye set transversely of the tool.

As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not inal limiting sense.

It will be understood that the studs 55 serve not only as a means to operate the attaching members but as attaching members to hold the eye set connected with the tool.

- Also that the three lugs 55 and 24 engage the eye set in substantially a common horizontal plane with the guide-wayof the body 15 so that the strain for moving the members as 20 and 21 produces little or no tendency to bend any part of the eye set.

Having thus described my invention, what -1 claim as new and desire to secure by-Letters Patent is: 1. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, said eye set having a body portion and pair of attaching members spaced apart and slidable upon said body portion in directions away from each other, the tool comprising a holding part to engage part for engaging the attaching members respectively to meanwhile slide the attaching member 2. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, said eye set having a body portion and relatively movable attaching members carried by the body portion, the tool having a part relatively stationary therewith arranged to engage the body portion to hold the body portion relatively immovably connected with the tool, and a pair of sepa rately formed levers comprised in the tool having parts to engage. the attaching members to move said attaching members With respect to the body portion, together with means to so m'ovesaid levers.

3. Ina tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, said eye set having a body'portionand relatively movable attaching members, a retaining member provided upon the tool to engage said, body portion for retaining the body portion relatively stationary with the tool, a spring comprised in the tool arranged to engage the body portion for holding the body portion releasably connected with said retaining member, and parts also comprised in the tool to engage the'attachmg members for moving the attaching members relatlve to the body portion.

6. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, supporting means for-the eye set by which to support the eye set and by which to position the eye set within the doll head, a body member to which said supporting means is attached, a connecting member holding said supporting means connected with said body member, and a spring held in position by said connecting member having a portion extending into position ad acent .said supporting means adapted to hold the eye set releasably in engagement with the supporting means. 21. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, means by which to support the eye set and by which the eye set may be positioned within the doll head, means for engaging the eye set to effect attachment of the eye set within the doll head requiring movement of the eye set in a direction longitudinally of the tool, and means for holding a part of the eye set connected with the tool constructed to prevent movement of said part of the eye setin a direction transversely of the tool while permitting movement of the eye set in a direction longitudinally of the tool.

22. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, means for supporting theteye set and by which to positionthe eye set within. the doll head, means movable in one direction by manual pressure to effect attachment of the eye set within the doll head, and a spring associated with said means effective to discharge the eye set from the tool upon release of the manual pressure.

26. In a tool for attaching an eye set with in a doll head, supporting means forsupporting the eye set and by which the eye set maybe inserted into position within the doll head through either the top or the neck opening of the doll head, the supporting means com-- prising parts to support the eye set inone position to thereby appropriately co-operate with the doll head structure when the supporting means is inserted through the neck opening, the supporting means comprising also another part co-operative with the first mentioned parts to. support the eye set in a reversed position to thereby appropriately positions, said tool comprising supporting means for engaging and supporting the. eye set and by which the eye set may beinserted into position within a doll head, and said supporting means consisting of parts to mate with the eye set and hold it in either of its two positions selectively at will.

28. A tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, where itis desired that the eye set may be carried upon the tool in either of two selected positions, said tool comprising supporting means for engaging and supporting the eye set and by which the eye set may be inserted into position within a doll head, and said supporting means consisting of parts to engage the eye set and support it in either. of its two positions selectively at will.

29. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, means for supporting the eye set and by which to position the eye set within the doll head, and movable mechanism; to effeet attachment of the eye set within the doll head, the said movable mechanism including means for attaching the eye set to the tool when said mechanism is moved in'one direction and for releasing the eye'set from the tool when said mechanism is moved in the opposite direction.

30. In a tool for attaching an eye set Within a doll head, said eye set having a carrier section and having a pair of attaching members movable in oppositedir'ections on said carrier section, the tool comprising means for supporting the eye set and by which to position the eye set within the doll head, and movable mechanism for operating upon said attaching members to efi'ect attachment of the eye set within the doll head, the said movable mechanism including means forattaching the eye set to the tool when said mechanism is moved in one direction and for releasing the eye set from' the tool when said mechanism is moved in the opposite direction.

31. In a tool for attaching an eye set within a doll head, means for supporting the eye set by which to position the eye set within the doll head, movable mechanism to effect attachment of the eye set within'the doll head, means to effect attachment of the eye set to the tool when said movable mechanism is ope erated in one direction, and means to effect release of said eye set from the tool when said movable mechanism is operated in the op sosite direction.
