. u Y v naine Application" lerl` November My invention relates` to the art of drying by means of a discharge ofY air through a drier ybarrel and consistsvin anovel drier and method adapted to be used for such purf pose.' n Y The objects of lmy invention are to provide ajcompactrdrier 4barrel torl attachment to theend of a pressure-hose rwhich shall lbeas easy to handle asthe average nozzle',
1ioand to provide an air drier having ameans 530 drier Fi ure 2 bein turned on its longitudinal axis 45 With referenceto Figure l.
Figures 3 and 4 are longitudinal sections 'and are taken on the lines3-f'3 and 4'-'-4 re-4 spectively of Figures 7, 8 and 9fto be de-L scribed later. f y Y Figure 5 is a left end view of Figure 2. Figures 6, 7, 8 vand 9 are transverse `sections takenron the lines 6-6, 7 7, 8--8 and 9-9 oi Figure 3. 1
Figure 10 is a right l.end view of Figure 2.`
My device includes'ffour main elements,
a cylindrical outer nozzle 1, a nose portion 2, Van inner yVeiuzuri-tube shaped nozzle 3 and radial ribs 4 connecting the outer noz zle, the nose and inner nozzle. c
An outwardly projecting ring 5 is inte gral With the outer nozzle l at the discharge c end thereof andprovides Va seat for arubber bumper B on the discharge end of the drier. y 40 Nose 2iis the receivingendof my device and includes an' interiorly threaded bore for connectionto a supply of air under pressure. f
Inner nozzle 3 has a converging mouth' ybetween and spaced fromthe receiving end of nozzle l and the nose 2. Mouth 7 with ribs 4, nose 2 and thetvvo nozzles `form ports 8 and passages k9 for the entrance of atmosv u pheric airinto the drier, ports 8 permit- 5Q'ting air to enter nozzle Sandfpassages 9 lavica 14, deze; ySriai no. 4o'?,i44=.'f"fr leading through the space'betvveen the '-tWo l beyond innerrnozzle 3.' Y
Inozzles tofthefinteriorof the outer'nozzle` The outer'edgesjla'oi' ribs 4 lcurve out- Wardly fromnose 2 and merge with the rim i ofthe mouth 7, and alsomergewiththeouter Vsurface of'nozzl-e l. "From nose 2, the 'inner v.edges 4b of ribs 4 convergeto pointsbeyond mouth 7 l'Where nozzle 3 has the smallest'di.- V N ameterand there merge With theinner sur? face of nozzle/3. y' y Y 1 f From the narrowest partof nozzle 3, for- YWard Aof mouth'7,the" sides of nozzle 3 gradjually diverge to thel discharge end 'of the I,
theyymerge intothe inner-"surface 'ot'outel' nozzle lV at the-discharge end of the drier.
- Ribs 4l are the sole connection -betiveenffnose In operation, my drierl functions in the folflovving manner: n I
Nose 2 1s secured to a supply of air under pressure.y Compressed air rushes into nozzle y 3 drawing atmospheric air through ports 8,;
pressed lair and atmosphericair miX withl eachother in nozzle 3 and the volume of air expands as it travels along vnozzle 3 Which increases in diameter toward its discharge end, and as thel volume of expanding air is discharged from nozzle 3 into larger nozzle l 'further expansion takes place, more atmospheric air is drawn in through the plurality of passages 9 which air mixes With the air discharged from nozzle :3 and the resultant stream is in turn discharged from the drier through the discharge end of the nozzle l.
By means of my drier barrel, a comparatively small strealm ofcom'pressed air may be utilized to direct a relatively large volume of air against a surface tobe dried. i My-device is particularly adapted for yuse in connection withwashing 4operations such yas Washing v automobiles, and with painting or similar operations where quick drying is desired.
Obviously, many of the details of my invention may be modified Without departing 5 from the spirit thereof, and I contemplate the exclusive use of such modifications as n comeavithin the 'scope ofqnywcflaims.k I claim: 1. In adrier, a. nozzle, elongated radial ribs y l@extending 'extern'ally along `said nozzle and' projecting 'beyond' the ends thereof, a thread-l ed hose connecting element on one end of said ribs adjacent the inlet end of said nozzle, a second nozzle mounted on said ribs yand ex- 15 tending from a. point intermediate the ends of said ifrstnozzle to a point beyond the discharge end thereof, said ribs cooperatin with said nozzles to 4form elongated restricte passagesfor directing atmospheric air into 20 said second nozzle. f
2. Iny a drier, a nozzle, elongated ribs eX- tending externally along said nozzle and projeetingbeyond one end thereof, a hose connecting element on the projecting ends of said $5 ribs, and a barrel mounted on said ribs and extending from a. point intermediate the ends of said nozzle to a point beyond the end of said nozzle opposite said connecting element, said Vnozzle being open at both ends for rel0 ceiving a stream of compressed air'andv atmospheric lairand discharging thesame into Vsaid barrel and said ribs cooperating with said nozzle and ybarrel to form elongated restricted' passages directing atmospheric air 35 into said barrel for further augmenting said stream.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature this 8 day of November, 1929.
