Cigarette extinguishers have been pro posed that snuff the fire from the lighted end of a burning cigarette by crushing and then disintegrating the crushed end and deposlt L? the shreds into an ash tray, and the present invention aims to provide an improved device of that nature and of a nature to be sold separately and applied to metal, glass, china or other trays by the purchaser.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which forms a part of this specification, and wherein like reference characters are used to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

In the drawings, reference character 2 indicates a tray, shown in dotted lines, and which may be of any desired material, such as metal, fibre, glass, porcelain, or other suitable material for use in the construction of ash trays. A central opening 3 is formed in the tray of a size to snugly receive the stem 4 of a nut 5. This nut is hexagonal or squared to receive a wrench or other tool and its stem 4 is provided with a threaded bore 6, open only at its upper end to receive the threaded lower end of the reduced stem 7 of a cylindrical post 8. An anvil 10 preferably in the form of a cup-shaped metal stamping and provided with a central aperture 12 is placed over the stem 7 with the latter passed through said aperture 12, and the wall 14;, which is exteriorly serrated or roughened, is engaged with the shoulder 15 of the post 8.
The upper end of the post 8 is provided with a circular head 16 and the body of the post passes through an aperture 17 centrally provided in the bottom of a cup-shaped nut 18. The lower face of the nut is also serrated or roughened for cooperation with the serrated or roughened upper surface of the anvil part 1 1. A. tube 20 exteriorly threaded at both ends is screwed into the cup-shaped nut 18 and into a similar nut 21, the latter being imperforate, to afiord a seat for one end of a coil spring 22 which bears at its other end against the said post head 16. This spring is inclosed within the tube 20.
A purchaser, who may be a dealer in quantities of such articles, may apply the invention to his own selection of ash trays by providing the same with apertures 3, irrserting the nut stem 4 into the same, applying the anvil 10 to the inside of the tray and inserting the stem 7 of the post through the opening 12 of the anvil and 3 of the tray, and then turning up the nut to firmly grip the tray 2 between the same and the anvil, thereby producing a very rigid and salable article.
The plunger may be modified as in Figs. 4 and 5 by providing a cylindrical casting 30 with a bore 31, providing an aperture 32 to slidingly receive the stem 8, but not to pass its head 16, and inclosing the spring 22 by inserting a disk 25, which latter provides a seat for one end of the spring while its other end bears against the post head 16'.
In operation, the lighted end of a cigarette is placed between the serrated or roughened faces of the anvil and the plunger, and the serrated upper edge of the latter grasped and the plunger forced downwardly to crush and thereby snuff the fire from the lighted cigarette end. To insure complete extinguish ment, the plunger 20 (or 30) is rotated so that the crushed end is disintegrated, while still under snufling pressure, and the shreds are deposited by centrifugal action over the edge of the anvil into the tray.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, cooperating extinguisher members, a headed post, one member slidable on the post and having a bore receiving the headed end of the post, a shoulder on the post, said post being passed through the other member and the shoulder engaged therewith, said post having a fastener engaging part, and a fastener having a post engaging part, one of said parts being adapted to be passed through 5 an ash receiver.
2. In a device of the character described, members having portions engageable with each other, one of said portions being adapted to be passed through an ash receiver, an extinguisher anvil, one of said members having a head and passing through said anvil and having a shoulder engaging said anvil, an extinguisher plunger slidable on the head ed member and provided with a bore to receive the head thereof, a. spring within the bore and bearing at one end against the plunger and at the other end against the said head.
3. In a device of the character described, members having portions engageable with each other, one of said portions being adapted to be passed through an ash receiver, a head and shoulder on one of said members, an anvil, said last mentioned member passing through the anvil and its shoulder engaged therewith, a plunger slidable on said last mentioned member and having a bore receiving said head, an end member secured to said plunger, and a spring within said bore engaged with said end member.
4;. In a device of the character described, an ash tray, an anvil secured to the tray and having a substantially straight surface, a plunger movable toward and away from said anvil and having a substantially straight surface adapted to co-operate with said surface of the anvil for extinguishing a cigarette, means for rotatably mounting the plunger, said plunger being rotatable about an axis arranged at right angles to its said straight surface, means whereby rotation of said plunger will remove a crushed cigarette end from between the anvil and the plunger, and a spring for normally holding the plunger in spaced relation to the anvil.
5. The combination with a tray, of co-operating extinguisher members, means fastening one of said extinguisher members to the tray, a post carried by one of said extinguisher members, the other extinguisher member having a bore to slidably receive the post, and a spring within one of the extinguisher members exerting pressure upon the a post to normally hold the extinguisher members in spaced relation.
