Description
W. F. MAURICE.
BURGLAR ALARM.
Patent-ed. Nov. 21,'18'75.
UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. MAURICE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN 'BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,642, dated November 21,1876; application led October 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: f
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. MAURICE, of the cit-y and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglar-Alarms, which improvement is fully set forth in the following` specitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a tripper formed of a metallic strip, constructed as hereinafter described, in combination with a bu rglar-alarm and the upper and lower sashes of a window in such a manner that the lowering of the upper. sash or the raising of the lower sash shall break the connection between the tripper and the ala-rm, and set the latter in motion, as
hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of the alarm, in connection with the upper and lower sashes of a window. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
Like letters of reference in both figures i11- dicate the same parts.
A is a case, which contains ordinary striking-works of a burglar-alarm. It is therefore deemed unnecessary to show the interior arrangement of the works. B is a'portion of a stile of the upper sash, and B' a like portion of the lower sash. C is a' screw which confines the case A to the upper stile B. D is a tripper formed of a metallic strip, which is bent at one end to form the curved beak a, which enters a depression in one side of the case A. The middle and straight portion of the tripper has a notch, b, at one edge, which engages with the outwardlvprlecting end of the ha miner-wire (l. The other end of the tripper is bent so as to form parts e f g. The part e is provided with a'n elastic ball or protuberance, IL, for the purpose of bearing against the opposite side of the caseA, to that with which the other end of the tripper is connected, so as to hold the tripper securely when set, and -vet admit of its being easily disconnectedfrom the case and hammer-wire by the opening ot' the window.
The operation is as follows: The beak a of thel tripper bcingengaged with a depression in the edge of the case A, the projecting end of the hammer-wire d drawn in the direction of the arrow and connected with the'notch b of the tripper, as seen in the drawings, and the elastic ball or protuberance h being pressed against the side of the case A with sufficient torce to hold the tripper securely in position, the end of the part g is caused to touch, or nearly so, the meeting-rail of the lower sash. Then if a burglar attempts to open the window, either by lowering the upper sash or raising the lower one, the downward pressure of the part g of the tripper upon the meetingrail, or the upward pressurev of the latter against it, disconnectsthe tripper from its connection with the case A and hammer-wire d, andl thereby sets the hammer in motion to strike the bell and give the alarm.
I claim as my invention- 1. The tripper D, having a beak, a, notch b, bent parts ef g, and elastic ball or protuberance h, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. IThe combination of the case A, tripper D, and the upper and lower sashes of a window, the case having a firm connection with the upper sash, and the part g of the tripper bearing upon the meeting-rail ofthe lowersash, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
WILLIAM F. MAURICE. Witnesses:
STEPHEN UsTIcK, THOMAS J. BEWLEY.
