Description
Feb. 23, 1932. L. s. HANKINS FIGURE TOY Filed Au 4, 1951 g y :1 i w M; w a? w Patented Feb. 23, 1932 UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE LINDSEY STUART HANKINS, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO CRAWFORD MANUFACTURING CO. INC., OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, .A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA FIGURE TOY Application filed August 4, 1931.
.1 tion, a representation of the animate body is displayed upon and as a part of the article, in association with the trappings or equipment usually worn by such animate body. An article shaped to the configuration of a horse, for instance, would carry representations of such animal on one or both. sides, together with the bridle, the saddle, saddle blankets, the stirrups, or of the harness in the case of a draft animal.
It is also to be understood that a representation of a dog would show a collar and a blank et, if desired; a cow would include the bell, and possibly tips on the horns, and a cat would carry a collar. The article may also a be made into the shape of a buggy, an automobile, or cart, or any other mobile or immobile structure representing a device adapted to be ridden by a child, or used as a seat or ornament.
Other objects of the invention will be made apparent in the following specifications,
when read in connection with the drawings forming a part thereof, and 1n which drawings like reference numerals 1nd1cate like a parts throughout the several views.
in said drawmgsz- 1 1s a side elevation of an article shaped generally to the configuration of a horse,
and carrying a representation of a horse on 1 each side.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of said article, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Now referring specifically to the drawings Serial No. 555,089.
in which like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the body portion of an article, herein shown as shaped to the general configuration of a horse, provided with a head 2, a flat, relatively wide top or saddle portion 3, and a flat, wide base e, having its front and rear edges slightly rounded at 5, 6 to permit of a slight rocking movement under the eXertions of the rider.
Each side of the horse-shaped article bears a representation of said animal, and such pictorial representation includes not only the proper delineations of the horse, but also the trappings or harness. The numeral 7 indicates the horses mane; 8 is the head gear of the bridle, and 9 indicates the reins. The breast-strap is indicated at 10, and the saddle blanket 11, is secured in position by the band 12. The harness and blanket may be of any colors desired.
lVhiie it is within the purview of the invention to fabricate the body of the article in any known manner, or to make it solid if desired, I prefer to provide a receptacle formed of complementary-Sheped sections of relatively flexible material such as oil cloth, and to sew the sections each to each at 13, 14, 15 and 16, after the receptacle is properly stuffed with sawdust, cotton, excelsior, or other suitable material 17. In actual practice a heavy grade of oil cloth or other fiexible material may be used and tightly packed with the stuffing material so that the article will have the rigidity necessary to support the weight of a small child.
The top or saddle portion 3 of the article is relatively wide and flat, as is also the bottom portion 4:, which rests upon the floor. With this construction the child will be able to sit firmly upon the saddle, with the feet within a few inches of the floor, and the broad base will cause the article to remain relatively immovable laterally, even under the violent antics of the rider, while the curved ends 5 and 6 permit only a slightly rocking motion, so that the danger of the article turning over longitudinally or laterally and injuring the child, is reduced to a minimum.
It is manifest that an article of this character would prove to be very popular with small children, since one child could be riding an article of one species while others are ostensibly racing on steeds of other species. Although it is believed that articles shaped to the configuration of animate bodies will be more popular, it is obvious that they may also be fabricated to represent automobiles, boats, airplanes and any other movable objects, a representation of the article being associated therewith in each case.
Modifications of the structure herein disclosed may be suggested to those skilled in the art, but my invention covers all improvements falling fairly within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A new article of manufacture comprising a stuffed article shaped to the configuration of an animate body and provided with a relatively broad fiat base adapted to contact a support at all points except adjacent a each end, and with a broad flat top, and dclineations carried by the body indicating trappings normally worn by such animates.
2. A new article of manufacture comprising a stuffed body shaped generally to the configuration of a beast of burden and havinga substantially flat saddle portion and a flat elongated base curved upwardly at each end, and a representation of said beast of burden carried by a side of the article.
3. A new article of manufacture comprising a stufied body shaped generally to the configuration of a beast of burden and having a substantially fiat saddle portion and a flat elongated base curved upwardly at each end, a. representation of said beast of burden carried by a side of the article, and delineations indicating the trappings normally worn by said beast of burden.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature.
LIND EY STUART HANKINS.
