Description

.Patented Feb. 9, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JULIAN R. BRANDON, DIE SAN FRANCISCO, CALIIORNIA SAFE'IY LOCK Applica.tion fi1ed October 1, 1929. Seria1 N0. 396,540.
1umuthorized opening oho lock by other t1mn the regular actuating means.
My invention has particular reie-z1ence to a 1001: in which a retrao nble 1:1tch mounted in 11110 lock housing has an inclined surfacs adapted fo1 impaot Wih the keeper, whereby t11e 1:1tch is retmcted 130 pass the front sge 0f the keeper and t0 afiterwards encsr a rscess provided in the keeper.
I have foundthat in locks 0f this chamcter it frequently is compamtively easy to open the 1atch by introducing a csrd 01' a thin she0rb 0f metal such as the front end of a knif0, between be 10ck housing and the keeper, and by pushing the card or knife ap;ainst the slantinp; face of the latch, Where- L3y fhe lntter is mache bo retract und 0 disengage frorn the keeper, so as to a11ow the d001' t0 wlhich the lock is applied t0 be opened.
It is proposed in the present invention t0 provide a very simple means 'f0r preventing such unauthorized opening of t-he lock.
Further objects und advantages 0f my invenfion Will appear as the speoifioation procees.
The preferred f01m 0T: my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in 'Wbich Figure 1 shows a horizontal section thr0ugh the edge of a C1001 and the ndjacent casi:ng having :1. conventional .1OCk applied thereto with my improvement incorporated 511 the 100k, and
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of 13110 keoper, embodying my improvement.
While I have shown only ehe p1eferled f01'n1 of 1ny invention, I wish t0 huv -e fit understood that various chan .qes or modifications: may be made mithin the scope of the claim hereto attached without departing;
- from Ehe spi1i of ehe invention.
Referling T Figure l, the, swinging end 0f 11110 d001' 1 is shown in normal closing position relative to the casing 2, which 1atte1 :zs provicled with a s]at 8 against which the (1001 raste, as shown at 4.
The lock housing 5, which may be of any suitable form is fastened t0 the (1001 by means of' screws 6 und has alle. conventional latch 7 retractably mounted theroin, the opernting means f0xr Ehe latch not being shown, 5!
as being of oonventional character.
A keeper 8, also 0f convenional character except fo1 my improvement and shown in detail in Figure 2 is fastened to the casing 2 in operative proximit-y t0 the lock housing 5, by means cf screws 9. The latch 7 is forn1ed With an inclined face 10 which in normal use strikes the keeper when the d001 is closed und, up0n passing the front edgelll of the keeper projects into the recess 12 formed in the keeper. It is understood. of cou1se, that the latch 7 may be 0f any suitab1e f01m and 1na v be manually operated 01' spring operated EIS the case 1nay be without affecting the 0b j ect 01 the present invention.
I have :found that a person may lock 0f this character with comparative ease by pryinq the s1at 3 away from th0 casing und introducing a (fll'd 0x the blade of a knife or a similar t001 between the slat und the casing und forcing the snme against the slan1 ing face 0f the latch, which Will cause the latter t0 retract and a1low the do0r t0 be opened. T0 prevent unauthorized opening of the door in this manner, I provide a stop 13 adjacent to the base 0f the inclined face 0f the latch so that 0 card 01 blade introduced in the munner previously described Will strike the stop 13 instead of the latch and Will therefore be prevented from operat ing the latter. The stop may bo 01 any suitab1e chamcter and is shown in the drawings as comprising a flango 14 proj-octing fr0m Ehe keeper adjacent 150 ehe rea1 sge 0'f the recess 12. the flangs being of sufficisnfi size t0 cover the space between the keepor and the lock housinp; without interiming with the opening and the c10sing of the (1001, und. the uctive face o:f the flzmge being preferably curved as shown in *he drawing so as to cause a flexible member used in the atempt t0 open the door to be curled when contacting the flzmge and turned hack 010 itself.
It should be understood that f0r the purpose 01' my invention the flange may be ap open a plied either to the keeper as shown in Figure 2 01 to the lock housing, as long as the same effectively protects the inclined face of the latch from approach by means of an object 5 advancing between the door and the casing.
I claim:
In a 1001: 0f the character described,- a keeper having a recess adapted -to .receive a retractable 1atch therein and having a stop flange adjacent to .the recess f01' barring a thin blade or the Iike f-r0m gairiing access the latch, the b1ade barring face of the keeper being concave so as turnthe Made back upon itself when pressure is applied t0 15 the blade.
