The present invention pertains to a novel anti-theft device constructed particularly for use in connection -with banks and similar institutions The obj ect of the invention is to prjov'idean apparatus for successfully" combating the hold-ups which at the present are .of such frequent occurrence. This object-"is acc'om plished by. providing a. gneehanisnrr which may beret-any operated the teller or clerk to completely close the front wall of his cage and at the same time lock the outer door to the banking room and sound an alarm.
In the accomplishment of this object, the open part of the front wall of the tellers compartment is provided with shutters adapted, when necessary, to form a solid closure. In this wall is also a wicket which may be closed by a sliding panel. Beneath the tellers cage is a shaft linked to the shutter and panel and also carrying a weighted lever. The weight of the lever normally rests on a rockable pedal on the floor and within easy reach of the teller. The parts are so arranged that when the pedal is operated in the event of a hold-up, the weight is left without support and caused to fall, whereupon the shutters and the wicket are immediately closed.
The door-to the banking room is equipped with a latch which is operable by cables also connected to the shaft which is controlled by the weight. Thus the latch is locked when the pedal is operated, and the thief is consequently trapped. The latch may also be constructed to function as a switch for sounding an alarm when the latch moves into closed position.
The invention is fully disclosed by .way of example in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device, showing also in elevation a door operated thereby;

On the lower face of the counter 1 is supported the tellers drawer 7 as shown more clearly in Figures 1 and 2. Beneath the shelf 1 are a pair of upright bearings 8 in which is journaled a shaft 9. To the shaft is fixed a. rocker arm 10 carrying at one end a weight so 11. The upper wall structure 3 has a wicket opening 12 which may be closed by a vertical- 1y slidable panel 13. The remaining end of the rocker arm 10 is joined to the lower edge of the panel by a link 14 as clearly shown in Figure 2. V
. To the shaft 9 are fixed two arms 15 near the bearings 9 as shown more clearly in Fig ure 7. Rocker members 16 are pivotally mounted at opposite sides of the shutter structure by means of hinges 16 on the framework 3 of the upper wall. The arms 15 are connected to the rockers by links 17 and 17 connected together by shaft 17 and the rockers are further connected to the slidable links 5 by links 18 as clearly shown in Figures 5 and 6. Thus, oscillation of the shaft 9 in the manner presently'to be described operates the shutters and also the panel 13. The shutter operating mechanism be placed between the ends of the adjacent shutter structures of adjacent cages as shown in plan section in Figure 8.
On the floor beneath the shelf 1 is secured a hinge member to which is pivotally attached a pedal 21 having a foot piece 22. The member ,21 carries at its, upper end a roller 23 'on;which the weight i11 -is radapted to rest as shown in Figure 1. When the parts are in this position, the panel 13 andthe shut ters 4 are open. The member a 21 is also formed with a rest 24 adapted to support the weight 11 as will presently be described.
The room containing the tellers cage is accessible through a double door consisting'of door sections 25 and26. .Thesections ma, be locked .in closed position by vajlatchfi ivoted onthe section 26 and engageablein a keeper 28 on the section 25. The shaft 9 is still further provided with .a bell crank lei er 29 secured thereto, the endsofthej'leter being joined by cables 30 and 31 to the, ends of the rocker latch 27. It will be apparent that the falling of the weight turns the shaft 9 and hence operates the shutter 4 and the panel 12 p in the manner already indicated.
It will also be seen that the cable 30 is pulled downwardly and the cable 31 relieved, whereupon the latch 27 is carried into the keeper 28 as shown in Figure 2. The-contact of the members 27 and 28 closes .a parallel circuit through the bell 38, whereby .analarm isgiven to summon help for the capture Ofrthe thief who has been trapped by the locking of the doors 25 and 26. At the same time the teller behind the closed shutters 4 and the money which now cannot be reached through the closed window 12, are protected.
In Figure 9 is illustrated a plan section of a multiple arrangement including a plurality of cages or compartments 40, each of which contains a pedal 41 andoperates beneath the tellers shelf similar to that already described.
