This invention relates to fire extinguishers 1 and particularly to an extinguisher and a mounting therefor adapted for use in motor. vehicles.
7 As is well known most of the fires which injure and destroy motor vehicles start under the hood or in the carburetor. Furthermore, a vehicle very often takes fire in case of a collision and this fire also originates un- 10 der the hood. a I
This invention has for its salient object to provide an extinguisher so constructed and so mounted that the extinguisher will automatically operate in case a fire breaks out beneath the hood of a vehicle or in the vicinity of the engine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fire extinguisher so constructed and matically operate in the event of a collision or asudden or violent impact of a motor vehicle with another vehicle or other object.
Further objects of the invention will appear from thefollowing specification taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is an elevational view partly in section of an extinguisher constructed and mounted in accordance with the invention; and w Fig. 2 is a detail elevational view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. The invention briefly described consists of an extinguisher casing, means for clamping the casing beneath the hood of a motor vehicle and a hammer controlled by a fusible element and adapted in case of fire to automatically operate and cause the extinguishing liquid to be liberated. The extinguisher, further-more, comprises means within the casing positioned for engagement by a frangible extinguisher container in the event of a sudden or violent impact of the vehicle with another vehicle or other object; The container is slidably mounted in the casing and is normally held by spring in a position spaced from an anvil which is disposed in the end of the extinguisher casing.
In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated there is shown a portion 1930. Serial no. 436,281.
of a? hood of a motor vehicle and a tie rod 10 of the usual construction'which connects the radiator tothe dash. The fire extinguisher comprises an outer. casing 11 having a pair of clamps 112 and 13 which encircle thecasing and are secured to the tie rod 10. A frangible container 15 is slidably mounted in the casing 11 but is normally held agajinst endwise movement by a spring'16 which isdisposed in one end of the casingand engages a ,washer 17 which in turn engages the end of the frangible container. The-washer is preferably madeof felt or other suitable material.

Y Inorder to efi'ect the release of the fire extinguishing liquid in case of fire a hammer 25' iscarriedyby an-arm 26i actuated-by, a spring 27 Thearfn 26 is pivoted on lugsf28 'carried by the clamp 12 and the spring tends to swing thearm about its pivot in an anticlockwise direction. The'arm is normally held against aotuation of the spring by'means offajfusiblelink 30 of any suitable construction which engages at one end a lug 31c'arried by. the arm and at .its other endarlug 32 ,formed on. or carried by the end of the 9 casing 11.
In case afire breaks out under the hood of' a vehicle, the rise in temperature will cause the fusible link to give way thus permitting the arm 26 and the hammer 25 to swing under the action of the spring 27. The hammer will thus be actuated into violent contact with the casing 11 and the contact of the hammer with the casing will cause the container to be broken thus releasing the fire extinguishing 1i uid therefrom.
rom the foregoing description it will be evident that a fire extinguisher has been so designed and so mounted that it will operate automatically in case of fire and will furthermore, operate automatically in case of a collision or violent impact of the vehicle with another object thus insuring the extinction of a fire in case a fire should break out on collision.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention has been particularly shown and described, it will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination, a supporting element located on a motor Vehicle, a fire extinguisher casing extending longitudinally of the vehicle, means for clamping the fire extinguisher casing to said element, a frangible container movably mounted for longitudinal movement in said casing, means for normally holding the container against movement, and means engageable by the container to break the container when the container moves a. predetermined extent in the casing, against the action of said holding means.
2. In combination, a supporting element located on a motor vehicle, a fire extinguisher casing, means for clamping the fire extinguisher casing to said element, a frangible container movably mounted in said casing for movement longitudinally of the vehicle, spring means for normally holding the container against movement, and means engageable by the container to break the container when the container moves a predetermined extent in the casing, against the action of said holding means.
3. In combination, a supporting element located on a motor vehicle, a fire extinguisher casing'extending longitudinally of the vehicle, means for clamping the fire extinguisher casing to said element, a frangible container movably mounted for longitudinal movement in said casing, means for normally holding the container against movement, and i an anvil in the casing engageable by the Container to break the container when the container moves a predetermined extent in the casing, against the action of said holding means.
