Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES vluiil-:la'l oFFlcE GEORGEH. HAMILTON, OF EAST GRANDRAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN i' l (partially broken 20 books and the like 30 of the SEATING COMPANY, F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY v Application filed March 9,
The present invention relates to supports for vbooks and the like; and its object is, gen-V when the device is not in use.
This and any other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the illustrative structure particularly described in the body of this speciiication and illustrated bythe accompanying drawings, in which:
igure 1 is a top plan view of a desk top away) and a support for applied thereto, said device being shown in collapsed position;l
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional View thereof taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1; said support being shown in dotted lines in its raised or usable position;
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of parts of the same taken on line 3%-73 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view of parts same takenY on line 4-4 of'Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a top plan view 0f said support (partially broken away) and of parts of the desk top.
In these drawings a support for books and the like is shown mounted in a box-like desk top 1 such as (with suitable legs) is Vused in schools, etc. As illustrated, this desk top has a bottom 2, end walls 3, front wall 4, rear wall 5 and a cover comprising a fixed portion 6 and a swingable closure portion 7 united by hinges 8.
The book supporting device comprises a supporting member 9 vertically slidable in the desk top, said members oppositely eX- tending lugs or pins 10 bearing in the vertical grooves 11 in the end walls 12, of a casing having a front wall 13 and a rear wall which is the rear wall 5 of the desk top, said end Walls 12, and front Wall 13 extending be- SUPPORT FOR BOOKS AND THE LIKE 1931'. semi No. 521,132.
preferably these plates being connected by bars or bolts Y 19 extending through a slot 2O in the supporting member 9. The upper end portions 21, 22 of these metal plates 16, 17 respectively are turned outwardly at right angles, ther end portion 'of plate 16 carrying, as by suitable attaching rivets 23, the body member 24 of the book rest, designated generally 25, and being turned upwardly over said body members free forward edge to form a ledge 26 on which the bottom edge on the book rest abuts, The upper end por# tion 22 of the other plate 17 is also fastened as by rivets 27 to body member 24.
The extension member 28 of the book rest carries as by rivets 34 the other leaf 85 of a hinge connecting by thev pintle 29 the two members of the book rest. The supporting member 9 and the plates 16, 17 thus forma collapsible leg for the book rest, whereby said plates and supporting member in their verticalpositions may be relatively moved downwardly into the casing 30 when the device is not in use, thus occupying the position shown in solid lines in Figure 2, and the extension portion 28`of the book rest may be turned downwardly as shown in that view, so that the two portions 24 and 28 ofthe book rest of the book, etc.
aVV
approximately'fill the gap 31 between theV spaced parts of the fixed portion 6 ofthe desk tops cover. I t
When the supporting member 9'is slid to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, it may be tilted forwardly, as thus shown, its lugs 10 turning in the grooves .11 and the lower end portion 32 of said member engaging the inturned upper iiange 38 kof the .desk tops rear wall to hold the device in the forwardly tilted position of use shown in said dotted lines.
' The invention being intended to be pointed if connected by a bar extending through out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described: a book rest; a support therefor comprising a middle member having vertical grooves in its opposite sides; a pair of members on the apposite sides respectively of the middle member, secured at their upper ends to the book rest and having vertically ext-ending ribs slidably bearing in the grooves.
2. In a device ofthe character described: a bool; rest; a support therefor comprising a middle member having a vertical slot therethrough and vertical grooves in its opposite sides; a pair of members on theopposite sides respectively of the middle member, secured at their'upper ends to thn book rest, said slot, and havingv vertically extending ribs slidably bearing in the grooves.
3. In a device of the character described: a book rest; a support therefor comprising a middle member having vertical grooves in its opposite sides; a pair of members on the opposite sides respectively of the middle member, having` outwardly turned upper end portions securee to the book rest, and having vertically extending ribs slidably bearing in the grooves.
l. In a device of the character described: a book rest comprising a body portion and an extension connected thereto by a hinge having leaves one of which is mounted on said extension; a. support for the book rest comprising a middle member having vertical grooves in its opposite sides; a pair of members on the opposite sides respectively of the middle member, one of said pair having an outwardly turned upper end portion secured to said body portion and the other one of said pair having an outwardly turned upper end portion secured to said body portion and forming the other leaf of said hinge, said pair of members having vertically extending ribs slidably bearing in the grooves.
5. In a device of the character described: a book rest comprising a body portion and an extension connected thereto by a hinge having leaves one of which is mounted on said extension; a support for the book restv comprising a. middle member having vertical grooves in its opposite sides; a pair of members on the opposite sides respectively of the middle member, one of said pair having an outwardly turned upper end portion secured to said body portion and extending around one edge thereof to form a book-supporting ledge, and the other one of said pair having an outwardly turned upper end portion secured to said body portion and forming the other leaf of said hinge, said pair of members having vertically extending ribs slidably bearing in the grooves.
