This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an internal combustion motor.
One object of the invention is to provide.
an internal combustion motor having its cylinders arranged in pairs,the cylinders of each pair being aligned, with pairs of pistons in the respective pairs of cylinders, the pistons of each pair being connected together by a piston rod and being connected also to a common crank shaft-by means of a single con- 7 necting rod.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel assembly of cylinders and pistons arranged in pairs, the cylinders of each pair being in alignment, with a common crank shaft to which the pistons of each pair are connected by a single connecting rod.
A further feature of the invention is to provide an internal'combustion motor of the character described equipped with means for compressing air without interfering with the operation of the motor. lVith the above and other objects in view '25 this invention has particular relation to certainnovel features of construction, operation, and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
wherein Referring now more particularly to the r drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures the numeral 1 designates the crank case of an internal combustion motor having a conventional crank shaft 2 rotatable in suitable bearings 3, therein. Mounted on this crank case is the cylinder block 4 havingthe cylinders '5, 5 alternately arranged therein." On this block there isa head plate 6, on which Y there is mounted another cylinder block .7 having the cylinders 8, 8 alternatelyarranged therein. The'cylinders 5 are aligned with 5 the corresponding cylinders 8' and the cylin ders 5 are aligned with the corresponding cylinders 8 and the outer ends of the cylinders 8, 8 are closed by the head 9.. 'The'cylinders' are thus arranged in pairs and "workingin the respective pairs of cylinders 5, 8' are the corresponding pairsof pistons 10, '11 and Working-in the cylinders 5,, 8, are the pistons I 10, 11. The pistons of the resp'ective pairs. are connected by the respective rods 12 which work through the corresponding stuffing boxes 13 in the head plate 6., The pistons 10,10 are connected to the' respective wrists of thecrank shaft by the connecting rods 14; The cylinders 5, 8' are connected by the con duits15, 15 and the cylinders'5, 8 are'con nected by the conduit-s 16,16. 1 Each cylinder has a firing chamber 17, formed in the'he ad plate 6 and communicating with the inner end of the corresponding cylinder and there is the usual spark plug anchored to said head plate and arranged to fire thecharge in the chamber 17. There is an intake manifold 19 through whichvthe explosive mixture is admitted to the respective explosion chambers. of the cylinders, the intake ofthe charges being controlled in the. well knownomanner by the intake valve 20 which is opened by the usual cam shaft 21, and closed by the usual spring'22. l v, i f v When a charge is admitted into one of two connected cylinders part of it will passinto the other of said connected cylinders form! ing, in effect, two charges which will be simultaneously compressed, and simultaneously fired, and the spent products will be simultaneously exhausted. An increase of power will thus be obtained without length ening the motor and a more compact power" unit will thus be produced having eight cylinders, without increasing the length, over the ordinary four cylinder motor.
The construction 'hereinabove described may also be used as aneflicient aircompressor branches 24, 24. These branches should be equipped with the check valves 25. When used, as an air compressor the respective cyl- ' inders 8, 8 should also have the inlet pipes 26, 26 equipped with the corresponding check valves 27, 27 Whether used as an air com pressor, or as a motor only, the respective pairs 8, 8 of cylinders should be connected by the bypass pipes 28, 28, as shown which are equipped with suitable'valves '29, 29 by means of which they may be opened and closed. When used as a motor only the pipes 23, 24, 2t and 26 will be removed and the valves 29 opened to permit the air to pass freely between thecylinders connected by the pipes 28, 28.. W'henemployed as an air compressor the valves 29 will be closed.
In the form shown in Figures 3 and 4 the numeral 30 designates the crank case on which ,thecylinder block 31 is mounted. This block is shown as having'six cylinders 32 to 37 inclusive and mounted onthe outer endof the block there is the head plate 38. Mounted on thishead plate 38 there is a cylinder block 39 having the cylinders d0 to inclusive aligned with the corresponding cylinders 32 to 37 thus forming pairs of cylinders, andthe cylinders of each pair being in alignment. 'The out-er ends'of the cylinders of the block 39 are closed by the head 46 which is suitablysecured to said block- 39.; In thepairs of aligned cylinders are the corresponding pairs of pistons 47 to 52 in clusiveand 53to 58 inclusive. The pistons of the respective pairs are connected by the rods 59'to ,64 inclusive and said pairs of pistons are connected, by the respective connecting rods v to inclusive, to the correspon'ding wrists of the'crank shaft 71 which is mountedin the crank shaft bearings 72 in thecrank case .30. i i v Tn'this form of the motor there is an intake manifold 73 through which the explosive mixture is delivered into the firing chamhers as 74,74 which communicate'with the correspondingexplosion chambers of the cyl inders of the respective pairs of cylinders. There are the spark plugs, as 7 5, 75, anchored to the firing chamber walls and adapted, to
fire the charges in said chambers. 7
The admission of the charges to the respective pairs of cylindersare controlled bvthe usual intake valves, as 76, 77, normally heldclosed by the respective springs 78, 79. Thevalve 7 8 may be actuated from the cam shaft 80, in the usual way. There are the two rocker arms 81-, 82 mounted in. the respective blocks 81, 39 and between the outer ends of these arms there is a push rod 83.-
There is a push rod 84- through which the cam shaft acts to actuate the rocker arm 81. The cam shaft 80 thus operates to open the valves 76,77 to admitthe charges to the cylinder-of each pair in proper sequence, such result being accomplished by the cam 85, on said shaft 80;
The respective pairs of cylinders are equipped with a single crank shaft and with' only six connecting rods. 7
