This invention relates to listing devices used in connection with printing mechanisms, such as addressing machines, for feeding a paper sheet or strip edgewise across the printing position so as to permit it to receive a series of impressions from the stencils or other printing forms.
The main objects of this invention are to rovide a listing device having improved ceding means adapted to grip the sheet; to
provide improved means for releasing the grip of the feeding means to permit insertion of a sheet; to provide improved mechanism for actuating said sheet feeding means; to provide an actuating mechanism of this kind which is operably connected with the printing mechanism of the machine for feeding the sheet one step after each printing operation; to provide an improved form of guide for guiding one edge of the sheet during its travel through the machine; to prov1 e a listing device of this kind which is adjustable for accommodating sheets of various widths; and to-provide an improved listing attachment embodying these improvements for use particularly as an attachment for a hand operated addressing machine.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

An improved listing device embodying this invention may be used in connection with various types of printing mechanisms but, in the construction illustrated, it is applied to a hand operated addressing machine of the type shown in our co-pendmg application, Serial No. 368,062, filed June 3, 1929. Certain parts of the addressing machine have been omitted from the drawings because they are not necessary to a complete understanding of the listing attachment.
In the construction illustrated, the addressing machine comprises an upright frame having a horizontal guideway along which the stencils are fed to a printing mechanism for impressing envelopes or a receiving sheet located below the guideway. The stencil feeding means and the printing mechanism are selectively connected to a manually operable handle. The improved listing attachment is operatively connected with the printing mechanism so as to feed the receiving sheet edgewise one step after each printing operation.
The frame of the machine includes a base 1, on which is supported a front wall section 2 and a rear wall section 3 which are spaced apart and connected to a curved end wall 4. The top of the base 1 forms a substantially fiat table 5 for supporting a stack of envelopes, not shown, or other material such as ayroll sheet 6, which receives impressions rom a series of stencils 7.
The base is hollow so as to form a housing for a reciprocable anvil, not shown, which is movable upwardly through the table 5 for supporting the sheet 6 or envelopes during the printing operation. The anvil and its operating mechanism are illustrated in said co-pending application. Part of the actuating mechanism for the anvil is located within a housing 8 formed in the rear wall section 3.
Located above the table 5, is a horizontal guideway 9, along which the stencils are fed intermittently by a reciprocable pusher 10. A stencil delivery magazine 11 and a receiving hopper 12 are located at respectively opposite ends of the guideway.
The printing mechanism includes the anvil, not shown, and an impression roller 13, which is journaled on an oscillating carriage l4 hinged at 15 to a bearing member 16 which is pivotally secured to the frame by a pin 17. The roller 13 is located between the wall sections 2 and 3 and is movable longitudinally of the stencil guideway. Supported on the carriage 14, are rollers 18 adapted to ride along the lower edges of tracks 19, which are mounted on the walls 2 and 3, for positionin the impression roller 13 in efiectlve contac with a stencil during the movement of the carriage in one direction. During the return stroke of the carriage, the rollers 18 engage the upper edges of the tracks 19 for lifting the impression roller out of contact with the stencils, as more fully described in said copending application.
The stencil pusher 10 and the printing mechanism are selectively operated by a handle 20, which is hinged on the pin 15. Integrally formed on the handle 20, is a housing 21 for supportin the selector means, not shown, which is adapted to connect the handle with the carriage 14, and with arms 22 and 23. The selector means is manually operated by a lever 24, mounted on the handle.
The arms 22 and 23 are connected, respectively, to the stencil pusher 10 and to the mechanism which actuates the printing anvil, as more fully described in said co-pending application.
Ink is supplied to the impression roller 13, by a transfer roller 25 and supply roller 26 mounted on the carriage 14.
The improved listing attachment to which this invention is applied is operable by the handle 20 for feeding the sheet 6 edgewise on the table 5 so as to permit the listing of a series of names or other data in a column, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The sheet shown in Fig. 4 is a payroll sheet but it is to be understood that the improved device may be used for feeding various kinds of sheets on which lists are desired.
In the form shown, the improved listing device comprises a pair of feed rollers 27 and 28 supported on a bracket 29 which is slidably mounted on a horizontal rail 30 secured to the base 1, so as to permit adjustment of the feed rollers longitudinally of the stencil path for accommodating sheets of different widths. The feed rollers are adapted to frictionally grip the sheet adjacent one edge thereof for feeding the sheet step by step across the table 5.
The roller 27 is an idler which is ournaled on a pin 31 secured to an arm 32 which is hinged to the bracket 29 by a pin 33. Supported on the pins 31 and 33, is an angle bar 34 which forms a guide for one edge of the sheet 6. An opening 35 is formed in the guide bar 34 to permit the sheet to be gripped between the rollers 27 and 28. The other edge of the sheet is guided by a channel shaped guide bar 36 mounted on a rod 37 which is slidably supported in a bearing 38 formed on the rear wall 3. The guide bar 36 is shiftable longitudinally of the stencil path, so as to accommodate sheets of different widths, and is secured in adjusted position by a set screw 39 engaging the rod 37.
The idler 27 and guide 34 are urged downwardly by a spring 40 for positioning the sheet in effective contact with the roller 28. One end of the spring 40 is connected to the arm 32 and its other end is connected to a tensioning lever 41 which is pivotally connected to a pin 42 supported on the bracket 29. The lever 41 has a projection 43 adapted to engage a stop pin 44 on the bracket for limiting the movement of the lever 41. The lever 41 is arranged to permit the idler 27 and guide 34 to be readily retracted when it is desired to insert or remove a sheet.
The roller 28 is positively driven and is connected to the printing mechanism of the addressing machine so as to shift the sheet one step after each impression. In the form shown, the roller 28 is fixed on a shaft 45 which is journaled on the bracket 29. Also journaled on the bracket 29, is a shaft 46 which is geared to the shaft 45 by pinions 47 and 48. The shaft 46 has a ratchet 49 which is adapted to be rotated intermittently by a pawl 50 carried by an arm 51 which is pivotally mounted on the shaft 46. A spring 52 urges the pawl into effective engagement with the ratchet.
In the form shown, the arm 51 is connected with the printing mechanism b links 53 and 54. The link 53 1s pivotally connected to the arm 23, which actuates the platen, and the link 54 is connected to the arm 51 by a pin and slot connection 55. The pin and slot connection 51 permits a variation in the stroke of the arm 51 for varying the distance through which the sheet is fed at each step. The inner ends of the links are secured together by a pin and slot connection 56 which permits a longitudinal adjustment of the links when the bracket 29 is shifted along the rail 30. A set screw 57 is mounted on the lower end of the bracket 29 for engagement with the rail to secure the bracket in proper position.
In operation, during the downward stroke of the handle 20, the" anvil, not shown, is elevated and the impression roller 13 is rolled in effective contact with a stencil. During the upward stroke of the handle, the pusher 10 shifts the stencils one step along the stencil guideway and the arm 51 is rocked upwardly for driving the ratchet, thereby moving the feed roller 28 for feeding the sheet one ste Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
We claim:
1. A device of the class described comprising a support for supporting a sheet in position to receive impressions from stencils, a bracket, 2. pair of feed rollers journaled on said bracket and adapted to grip the sheet a pair of Nil. PRINTING for feeding it edgewise, said bracket bein adjustable for accommodating sheets of di ferent sizes, an operating member, and adjustable means operatively connected with said member for actuating one of said rollers.
2. In a device of the class described, a support for supportin a sheet in position to receive impressions rom stencils, a guide rail mounted on said support for engaging one edge of the sheet, a bracket, a pair of feed rollers ournaled on said bracket and adapted to grip the sheet for feeding it edgewise, said bracket being adjustable for accommodating sheets of different widths, means for actuating one of said rollers, an operating member, and an adjustable connection between said actuating means and said operating member.
3. In a device of the class described, a support for supporting a sheet in position to receive impressions from stencils, a guide rail mounted on said support for engaging one edge of the sheet, a bracket, a pair of feed rollers journaled on said bracket and adapted to grip the sheet for feeding it edgewise, said bracket being adjustable toward and away from said rail for accommodating sheets of different Widths, a spring urging one of said rollers toward the other roller, a ratchet geared to said other roller, an arm hinged on said bracket, a pawl carried by said arm and adaptedoto actuate said ratchet, an operating member and an adjustable link operatively connecting said hinged arm with said operating member.

In a device of the class described, a frame, a support on said frame for supporting a sheet, a guide arranged to engage one edge of the sheet, a bracket on said frame, a pair of feed rollers journaled on said bracket and adapted to grip the sheet for feeding it edgewise, said bracket and guide being adjustable toward and from each other for accommodating sheets of different widths, and means for actuating one of said rollers.
5. In a device of the class described, a bracket, a feed roller journaled on said bracket, a guide adapted to support a portion of a sheet in position to engage said feed roller, an idler journaled on said guide and adapted to coact with said feed roller for feeding the sheet edgewise, said guide being movable for shifting said idler toward and from said roller, and mechanism for driving said roller.
6. In a device of the class described, a bracket, a feed roller journaled on said bracket, a guide adapted to support a portion of asheet in position to engage said feed roller, an idler journaled on said guide and adapted to coact with said feed roller for feeding the sheet edgewise, said guide being movable for shifting said idler toward and from said roller, a spring urging said guide toward said roller, means for relieving the tension of said spring, and mechanism for driving said roller.
7. In a device of the class described, a support for supporting a sheet, a bracket, a feed roller j ournaled on said bracket, a guide member hinged on said bracket and adapted to support a portion of the sheet in position to engage said feed roller, an idler j ournaled on said guide member and adapted to coact with said feed roller for feeding the sheet edgewise, a spring engaging sald guide member for urging said idlerirfio efiective relation with said roller, and mechanism for driving said roller.
8. In a device of the class described, a support for supporting asheet, a bracket, a feed roller j ournaled on said bracket, a guide member hinged on said bracket and adapted to support a portion of the sheet in position to engage said feed roller, an idler j ournaled on said guide member and adapted to coact with said feed roller for feeding the sheet edgewise, a spring engaging said guide member for urging said idler into effective relation with said roller, a tensioning element pivotally mounted on said bracket for tensioning said spring, said element being movable into position to relieve the tension of said spring to permit the insertion of a sheet between said idler and roller, and mechanism for driving said roller.
