This has resulted in the spoiling of much Work due to the cutter tearing out pieces of the narrow thin rim of the attaching surface, which passes over the slot, past the cutter, without adequate support. This difiiculty is inci-eased by the fact that the grain of the Wood, runs longitudinally in; a. heel blank, and little pieces of the rim are. very easily split off.
A principal obj ectof the presentinvention is to avoid this difliculty. To this end I have provided a supporting plate closely surrounding the operative portion of the cutter, to
support the rim at points immediately adj acent to the cutter teeth. This guard plate is Y made of material, preferably such as fiber or brass, which is rigid but substantially softer than the cutter, and is movable along the work table so that the cutter can cut its own way into it and secure a perfect fit between the cutter and the guard plate, irrespective of the shape of cutter being used for the particular work in hand.
In accordance with a feature of the invention the guard plate is located in a groove in the top of the work table and is held therein gage.

Whena new cutter is mounted in the ma-Y chine, the table 26 is adjusted to proper position by the screws 16 and 30. The adjustment is secured roughly by the screw 16 and thefiner screw 30 easily secures the exact amount of projection desired for the cutter. Thus, the table 26 can always be kept onthe angle that is convenient for the operator.-
,The gage 44 is then loosened enough to permit the plate 42 to. move, and this plate is pushed into-the cutter until the cutter has cut a. notch into it-of substantial depth. The
gage is then adjusted to proper gaging posi- -tion tosecure the proper width of rim on the. attaching face of the heel blank, and clamped inplace by'the devices at 48.
-The operatorthen takes a heel blank 52, as shown in Fig.9, in vhis'fingers and places it on the table with its breast surfacesubstant-ially parallel to the plane of the cutter and its edge against the gage. He then pushes and turns itsuccessively through the positions shown in Figs. 4 to 8,: and removes it from the machine, it then having the appearance shown in ig. 10 at 54.
.- .-'The plate 42 can be pushed in by a'follow- 'ingplate of the same character, as it is cut away by successive adjustments, and used up to its last inch or so. It supports the edge of the heel block immediately adjacent to the ends ofthe cutter teeth and prevents tearing out any portion of the heel blank rim by the cutter." 1
Having described my invention, what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-of the United States is:
1. In a wood heel concavingmachine, a work table, a rotary concaving cutter, and
a guardplate carried by the table, said platebeingmade of. a rigid material easily cut byv the cutter, and being also movable onthe table toward the cutter to permit the cutter to cut a slotin the guard plate closely surround- 1 ing the effective portion of the cutter.
