This invention relates to valves adapted to be used in the connections between the supply pipes and radiators of heating systems but obviously may be used in many other relations Where it is necessary to more or less frequently repack the valves against leakages of the heating fluid therethrough.
The main object is to associate the packing elements with the valve operating stem and valve in such manner that the valve may be closed to prevent the entrance of the heating fluid to the packing glands preceding the removal of the packing elements and valve operating stem thus permitting the packing parts to be easily and expeditiously renewed when necessary or desirable without disconnecting the valve from the radiator or supply P P Another object is to permit a packing element to be removed and replaced at will without removing the valve operating stem.
A further object is to permit a valve operating stem and all of the packing elements to be removed when the valve is closed without disturbing said valve from its closed position. I

I i In order that the invention may be clearly understood II have shown'a radiator valve case '-1 provided with a valve chamber '2- and a valvev seat 3 surrounding the inlet -4- for the heating fluid, said valve being provided with suitable means as'the nipple -5 for connection with. the .radiator or other heat distributing apparatus.
The passage of the heating agent into the chamber --2 is controlled by a valve -6 of less diameter thanthe chamber andadapted when'clos'ed to firmly engage the seat -3 and thereby to cut off the passage of the heat;
part 4 through the is threaded externally and adapted to be screwed into the opening -7, the upper end of said bushing being enlarged to form an annular flange +9- for engaging the upper end face of the valve case when the bushing is tightly screwed in place.
The outer end of the bushing is flat and its lower end is somewhat conical or tapered r downwardly and is provided with an opening 10- coaxial with the passage i and opening 7, the walls of said opening being threaded for receiving an externally threaded stem -11fprojecting upwardly from the valve -6- so that when the threaded stem ll is rotated, in one direction it will close the valve 6- against the seat 3 and when rotated in the opposite direction will open the valve from the seat.
The valve stem -11 is formed with a 8 central vertical socket 12 extending from the upper face of the valve .6 through the upper end of the valve stem and preferably square or angular in'cross section for receiving a correspondingly square orangular lower end 13 of a valve operatlng stem 14 presently described.
The bushing 8- is provided in its upper side with a socket -15 extending down wardly from the upper face thereoffor receiving the packing forming a part of the subject matter of the invention, said socket being coaxial with the valve stem 11 and having its peripheral walls threaded and adapted to be engaged by an externally threaded follower l6-. The bottom wall of the socket 15- is provided with a central re duced opening 17 for receiving a cylindrical portion of the valve stem.
The adjacent portion of the valve stem 14 109 extends from the socket 12 in the valve stem 11 upwardly through the opening 17 and through a corresponding central opening 18 111 the follower 16.
The portion of the valve operating stem 14 within the socket 15 is provided with an annular flange 19 and between this flange and the bottom wall of the socket 15 is placed a packing member -20 closely fltting within the peripheral walls of the socket -15- and against the adjacent portion of the valve operating member 14.
The follower -16 is provided in its lower side with a socket -21 of about the same diameter as the flange 19 for receiving said flange and an additional packing member 22-, the latter being disposed between the upper face of the flange 19 and top wall of the socket -21.
The upper end of the follower -16-- is provided with opposite flatt faces 16- adapted to be engaged by a wrench or equivalent tool for tightening and releasing said follower in the socket 15-, it being understood that the follower is free to turn independently of the valve operating stem 14..
The portions of the valve operating stem 14 immediately above and below the annular flange 19- are cylindrical and these cylindrical portions are engaged in corresponding cylindrical openings in the bottom wall of the socket 15 and top wall of the socket -2l thereby permitting turning movement of the valve operating stem 14 relatively to the bushing 8 and follower -16 for effecting a corresponding turning movement of the screw-threaded valve stem 11 for opening and closing the valve 6.
The upper end of the valve stem 14 above the annular flange 19 extends some distance above the follower 16 and this extension as 23 is preferably square or angular in cross section for receiving a handle 24 by which the valve operating stem may be rotated for opening and closing the valve 6, the handle 24 being shown by dotted lines in Figure 2.
It is evident, however, that any other suitable means may be employed for rotating the valve operating stem.
The bushing 8 is provided with a chamber -8 between the bottom wall of the socket 15 and upper internally threaded end of the bushing for receiving the upper end of the threaded extension or stem 11 of the valve 6 as the latter is raised and lowered by turning movement through the medium of the operating stem 14, the lower end of the bushing 8 being spaced a suflicient distance above the valve seat 3 to allow for the opening and closing of the valve 6.
It is now evident that when the valve 6 is closed against the seat 3 communication between the inlet 4 for the heating fluid and valve chamber and also communication between the inlet and outlet of the valve case will be cut off thus permitting the removal of the entire packing device for rep an'sor athustmcnts when desired without hability Operation When the valve case is connected in the heat-distributing system and the valve and packing device are installed in operative position the valve may be opened and closed at will by simply turning the valve operating stem 14 in reverse directions through the medium of the handle 24 or other suitable operating member.
When the valve is opened the threaded engagement of the valve stem 11 with the internally threaded lower end of the bush ing 8 prevents the escape of the heating fluid past the threaded joints but in case there should be any slight leakage at this joint it would be immediately checked by the packings 20 and 22 of the packing device.
011 the other hand, if it should. become necessary to replace the packings 20 and 22 the valve stem 14 will be operated to firmly close the valve 6 whereupon the follower 16 would be removed from the socket 15 to permit the removal of the packing member and if necessary, the valve operating stem 14 could then be removed to permit the removal and renewal of the packing 20, these operations being performed without liability of leakage of the heating fluid through the opening 17 in the bushing 8.
In assembling the various parts of the packing device in operative position, the packing member 20 is first placed in the bottom of the socket 15 after which the valve operating stem 14 isrplaced in operative po sition with its lower end in sliding engagement with the walls of the socket 12 of the valve stem 11 and the annular flange 19 in engagement with the upper face of the packing 20.
The packing member 22 is then placed over and upon the upper face of the flange 19 after which the follower 16 is screwed tightly in place in the socket 15 to firmly clamp the packing 20 against the bottom wall of said socket and at the same time to firmly clamp the packing 22 against the upper face of the flange 19 without interfering with the free turning movement of the valve operating stem 14.
When the parts of the packing device have been restored in the manner just described. the valve operating stem 14 may be turned in the proper direction for opening the valve 6 and allowing the heating fluid topass from the inlet 4 into the outlet 15 and thence into the radiator or other heating distributing system.
When the bushing -8 is secured in operative position in the valve case 1-- it becomes a part of said valve case for practi- 5 cal purposes and is only made separate therefrom to permit the removal of the valve 6 through the opening 7 when the bushing is removed.
What I claim is:
10 The combination with a valve case having a valve chamber therein with an inlet and an outlet for said chamber and a valve seat in said chamber, a valve member movable into and out of engagement with said seat and having a hollow externally threaded extension, a bushing threaded into one end of the case and having the outer end thereof flat and provided with an enlarged flange for engaging the end face of said case, said bushing including a socket in its outer flange end and a hollow extension in said casing having a threaded opening therein in screw engagement with said valve extension for maintaining the valve in and out of engagement with said seat, said socket having a reduced opening through the bottom wall thereof, a valveoperatingstem' extending through said socket and opening and having splined connection with said hollow extension of the valve for turning the latter to open and close the valve as the stem is rotated, and means in said socketand engaging said bushing for holding the valve-operating stem against end-wise movement.
