This invention relates to smokers stands, and has for its general object and purposeto provide a simply constructed,ornamental and serviceable stand provided with means for receiving and extinguishing lighted cigar. and

cigarette butts, as well as rashes, burned matches and other waste, and which will to a material degree, thereby prevent the dissemination" of yobjectional odors int A phere ofthe room. v

It is another and more particular object of the invention to provide a smokers stand embodying a base structure and a. hinged cover therefor, together with novel means for lf mounting or supporting a water containing bowl or receptacle within said base structure. It is another detail object of the invention to provide supporting meansifor the water containing'bowl in the form ofa cradle constructed andmounted in the base of the stand whereby the bowl will always be'sustained or suspended in a perpendicular position to obviate spilling or discharge of the water therefrom in the event that the stand is accidentally knocked over or tilted to various angular positions. a

It is another important feature oier the invention to provide the hinged cover ofthe stand with a central directing tube or post together with a table top of improved construction having a central depending tubular portion engagedby the upper end of said post, and novel means for rigidly securing the several parts in assembled relation. It. is also` a further general object Aof the invention to provide a s-molers stand, the se'veral elements of which are of simple mechanical form so that the stand may be produced at comparatively small manufacturing cost.

Referring in detail to thedrawings, the

base structure of the stand includes a hollow top section 5 which may be ofany' desired v ornamental shape or form and is entirely 70 open at its top. This toprsection 5 is rigidly supported'on the upper end of a tube`6 of suitably predetermined length, said upper end of the tube being seated lwithin an annular flange 7 formed on thel bottom wall of the section 5. The lower end of said tube is positioned within a 'similar annular flange 9 formed on an ornamental cover member 8 rabbetedlat its lower end as at 10 yto `receive the boss 11 provided upon a footed basesec-V tion 12. These several parts, together withthetop section 5 of the base structure are rigidly tied or secured together by means of the rod 13 which is extended downwardly through the opening lain the bottom wall of lthe 'section 5 and is threaded at its lower endv as shown at 15, in a central opening formed through the boss 11 of the base section 12.

The upper portion of the stand includes an inverted hollowcover section 16, a length of tubing 17 having its lower end seated within the annular flange y18 on the top` of the cover section to retain saidtube in V,alignment with the opening l19 of saidcover section, anda 'able 20. This table is in the form of a metal casting having an annular portion affording a table top of appreciable width and a central downwardly extending tapering tubular portion 21, the wall of which at its lower end, is rabbeted as at 22 to receive the upper end of the tube 17.

The parts 16, 17 and 20 are rigidly securedtogether by means of the ornamental vertical standards 23 engaged at their lower ends upon the horizontally disposed annular part 24 of the coverV section 16 and having threaded bores to receive the attaching screws 25 disposed through openings provided l-in the part 24. The upper ends of the standards 23 are horizontally extended and engaged against the under sideofthe table 20,said ends of the standards beingprovided with openings therein Vto receive the screws 26 which areadaptedto be threaded into suitable bores providedinthe ends of the arms of a carrying handle 27v which Vbridges or lextends diametrically across the upper open end ofthe tapering part 21 of the table.

The cover `section 16 is hingedlyconnected with the top section 5 ofthe base structure for radial movementV relative thereto. The parts of this hinve shown yat 28 are ofsuitable ornamental lforni and riveted or other- 'wise secured to the walls of the base section 5 and cover section 16 respectively. The opposedv edges ofthese walls are recessed or rabbeted as indicated at 29zso thatwhen 4the cover section is in closed position, `the outer surfaces of the walls of saidsections will'be positionedsubstantially in the same curvilinear pl-ane. At the diainetrically opposite side of the device with respect to the hinge 28, the members 30 Vand 31 are secured to the walls of the base Section5 and thecover 16 respec tively, and are preferably of the same ornamental forin as theparts Vof the hinge 28. The member 30 has a hollow part 32in which a latch pin 33 is slidably niountedand is urged to 'its latchingrposition by the spring 34, `one end of said pin being provided with a suitableinger piece or knob 35. The other member 31 is-provided with a part .36 having va socket V37, and when the cover section 16 is in closed position, this socket is in alignment with the bore of the part A32. V'thin the base section 5 of the stand, a water containing bowl or receptacle 38 isi-emovably supported. `Preferabl-yl suspend this bowl in a swinging cradle, said cradle as hereinushown, Vembodying an outer ring 39 andan innerring 40. The inner ,ring isconnected with the outer ringat diametrically v spaced pointsbysuitable pivotsp41 while 'the outer ring 39 is pivotally mounted upon the wall of the base section 5 at diametrically op- Y posite points as shown at 42, the said pivots 42 being disposed at right angles to the pivots 41 connecting the rings with each other.

The bowl 38 which may be of glass or other suitable material preferably has its wall tapered inwardly `as indicated at 43.1to restrict the diameter of the top opening 44 of said bowl. Intermediate .of its ends, the wall .ofthe bowl38 iszprovided with an external annular flange or bead 45. This bead is adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the inner cradle ring 40 as clearly shown in Figs. p 5 and6 of the drawings and to said ring, the 80 upwardly extending holding :springs 46 are suitably secured, saidsprings attheir upper ends beingformed to snap overV the beador flange 45 of the bowl 38 and thereby releasably hold said .bowl in 'its suspended position;S5 within the ring 40.

It will Ibe `evident .from the above description that the bowl is supported bythe cradle out of contact with `the walls of the base section 5 and cover section 16, and said .bowlis 50 lso proportioned relative to the internal dimensions of the parts 5 and 16 that in all positions ofthe stand and in the relative swingt ing or pivoting movement of the cradle rings .39 and 40, the bowl will not contactwith said 15 walls. Thus as shown in Fig. 6 of the .drawL ings, ifthe stand is accidentally knocked over yto a horizontal position, `thetwo cradle rings will either swingtogether relativeto the wall of the base section 5 or the inner ring .40 Iwill 'fl-.00 pivot within the outer ring 39 so that the normal perpendicular positionof the bowl Yor receptacle 38 will be maintained, thus preventing thedischarge or spilling of the water contained therein. In the use of the improved smokers stand Aaboved'escribed, when disposed in the normal upright `position as shown in Fig. 1, ashes or lighted cigar or cigarette butts will be dropped through the central opening of the 15.10 table top and .the part 2l and directed bythe tube 17 into the bowl 38, the upper open end 44 @of which" is disposed immediately beneath the lower end ofthe tube 17 and the opening 19 inthe cover section 16. Thus the ignited 1i-l0 tobacco is vinstantly extinguished so that the disagreeable fumes or odors fromV smouldering tobacco will be obviated. Thuswithout requiring the retailerto stock` a large number of complete stands the individual esthetic tastes of respective purchasers may be rcatered to. Also, it Will beevident that by producing a' stand of this kind in the Vform of separable parts rigidlyunited or held in assembled relation, .a largenumber of the similar individual parts of the stand can be very compactly arranged, thusreducing to a very appreciable extent, the space occupied by such parts in storage 'or shipmentV incomparison with vthat which would berequired if the-stand were produced in a single unit having permanently assembled inseparable parts. 1

From the foregoing description considered in connection with the` accompanying'drawings, the several novel features of vmy improved smokers stand will vloe Vclearly understood. The construction ofthe several parts thereof and the means provided for connecting the same inl assembled relation enables such assemblage to be very easily and quickly made, with an assurance of an absolutely rigid relationship between the several parts of the stand. When it is desired to einpty the bowl 38 of the waste matter collected therein, it is only necessary to pull the latch pin outwardly against the actionkof the spring 34 so that the entire upper structure of the stand `including' the cover section 16, may be radially swung to one side of the upper open end of the base section 5. The bowl 38 may then be readily lifted from the swinging cradle and after discharge of its contents and cleaning, is refilled with water and then replaced in the cradle. After returning thel upper part of the stand to its perpendicular position and latching the same in connection with the base structure, the stand is then Vin condition for further use. An article of this kind, constructed in the manner above eX- plained, is susceptible of embodiment in numerous different ornamental forms, but in view of the relative simplicity of the Vseveral parts thereof, such stand can be manufactured and soldat comparatively small cost. While I have hereinY shown one practical and preferred embodiment of the device, it will nevertheless be understood that the .es sential features thereof may also be incorporated in various othery alternative structures, and I accordingly reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes therein as may be `fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.v

A stand of the kind described com prising upper and lower tubular sections, means arranged between and connecting said sections to: enclose and removablyv support a collection receptacle, a table top having a central opening through which Vmateriall is adaptedto be deposited and-provided with azseat cfzvncentaic;V with said openingreceving the upper' end of said upper/tubularsection, and means for rigidly and detachably securing said table top in assembled relation with said upper tubular section, kwhereby table tops of various sizes and shapes may be interchangeably assembled With said tubuJ lar section of the stand.

A stand of thekind describedcomprising upper and lower tubular sections, means arranged between and connectingsaid sec-l tions to enclose and removably support a collection receptacle, a table top having a central opening through which material is adapted to be deposited and provided with a seat concentric Vwith said opening receiving the upper end of said upper tubular sec` tion, a carryingy handle separable from the table top,and means forrigidly securing the handle and table top to each other including parts detachably secured'to said. receptacle enclosing means and rigidly securing vthe table top in assembled relation. with said upper tube section, whereby table ytops and carrying handles of various sizes and :forms may be interchangeably assembled with said tube section of the stand. r
