DIE HOLDER Filed July 24. 1929 mv/i mzam Jworarf i Patented Nov. 3, 11931 ES ATES namimnn a. FOLEY, or ,GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS; ASSIGNORQTO GBEENF IELD fur-8a DIE CORPORATION, or GREENFIEL ',MASSA HUSETTS, ACQRIfORA'IION or .lVIASSACI-IUSETTS 15in norms v Application fiiea'm 'zi, 1929; "S'erial'dfio'. 380,709. i
' This invention relates to a holder for dies used .in cutting screw-threads on pipes, rods or other-similar work.
It is the object of my invention to provide a die-holder soconstructed that cutting dies V of more than one siz-eor dimension may be efiectively secured therein.
A'further object is to provide improved means for adjusting the cutting dies in the 1 holder to cut a thread o'ftheiexact required,
" size, and to'provide means for firmly securing the cutting dies adjusted position in said holder.
My invention further relates to rrange- 1 ments and combinations of parts which will behereinaft'er described and more particularly pointedo'ut in theappend-ed claims.
Y? preferredform of the invention is shown erwitha pair of cutting diesmounted there- I Fig. 1 is a plan view of my lmproved hold- Fig. 2
along the line 7-7 in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 8 1s a perspective view of one of the cutting dies. r
Referring tothe drawings, my improved I die-holder comprises a cylindrical member or disc 10 adapted to be mounted in a die-stock 11, shownin dotted;;lines in Fig.4, and to 4,0
besecured therein by ajbindingscrew 12. The die-holder 10 is provided with undercut "openings in one face thereof forming guideways 1a and 16 for cutting dies 18 (Fig; 2)
V or 20 (Fig.1).
{1 fli elatively narrow, to fit the narrower blanks 'ffrom, which the cuttingidiesi 18 are formed, while the guideWay'sj 16, are. relatively wide,
It will be noted that the guideways 14 are to receivexthe wider blanks from which the cutting dies 20. are formed] j v is a; similar a... but showing dies therein formed of a difiierentwidth of blank g I 0f dilferent widths.
screws =22.are tlireaded in the I die-holderlO inaligmnent, with the guidewaysltand 16,.and serve for adjusting the cutting dies toward the axis of the. die tothe exact required position. I v Thelower part of the die-holder is provided with a large internally-threaded opening 24:, which receives a threaded clamping plate 7 The 'plate; 26 is provided with a central opening 27 to clear 'the'work and with openings28; for application of a wrench or span- HGR' a I Whenthe plate 26 is screwed .firmly into the;opening,2 1 and against the under-sides of the cutting dies 18 or-20,the dies are forced upward into. the undercut guideways 14; or 16 andare thus'held in position. i
.Inclge c lines 30 maybe provided on the holder10 and cutting dies 18 or 20, by which the dies maybe quickly and easily adjust ed tothe' desired position.
In the manufacture of screw-cutting dies of this generaltype, it is customaryto cut the threads of different diameters in blanks 7 proved holder, it is necessary to provide only one'half as many holders as there are sizes of die blanksand each size die may be. conveniently adjusted and will be accurately held in said holder. j 7 Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wishto be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. A die-holder comprising a body having a pair of oppositely disposed undercut guideways of one width formed therein and havinga second pair of oppositely disposed undercut guideways-of a different width formed therein, and means to hold a pair of cutting dies of one width ofstock in one pair of said guideways or a pairpof cutting dies of a different width of stock in the other pair of said guidewayssaid two pairs of dies being By the use of my imslidable in said guideways along lines per pendicular to the same work axis.
2. Adie-holder comprising a body having 7 a pair of oppositely disposed undercut guide-v ing a second pair of oppositely disposed undercut guidewaysof a different Width formed therein, said secondpair of guideways being disposed substantially perpendicular to said first; pair, and means to hold a pair ofout- Y ting dies of'one'width ofstock .in one" pair ofsaid guideways or a pair offcuttingidies of a different Width'of stock in theother pair" ofsaidguideways. v
7 1 d -h ldeiii ompr nga pdy having a pair of oppositely disposed undercut guide- Ways of one Width formed therein and haying 'a second pair of oppositely disposed undercut guideways'ofa different Width formed therein, and a single clamping element for all of saidguideWays eflective to holdla pair of cutting dies of-oneyvidth of stock in one pairofsaidigui'deways or a pair of cutting I dies of a difierent Widthofjstock in the other pair of said guideways. I Y Y v 4. die h'older comprising a body having a pair of oppositely disposed undercut guide- Ways of one widthfformed therein and hay I 1 ing' a second pairof oppositely disposed ung 2 dercutguideways of a different Width formed 7 a therein, means common to all of said guide? Ways to holda pair of' cutting dies of one Width of stock in one pair of said guideways r or a pair of cutting diesof a diflerent'width of stock in the other pair of-said guideways, and separate means to adj ust each cutting die radiallyflinfsaidholdergI V Intestimony whereof I have hereunto af fiXed'Iny signature; 1 f MICHAEL J.
