IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182.933, dated October 3, 1876; application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARION JANsEN and JOSIAH MEKEEL, of Garrisons, in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad J ournal-Box and Oil-Cup, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of our improved journal-box and oil-cup, taken through the line 00 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line 3 3 Fig. 1.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved journal-box and oil-cup, to take the place of the boxes now in use, and which shall be so constructed as to keep the journal oiled for any length of time, and avoid the use of the packing now employed in said journalboxes.
The invention will first be described in connection with drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents the journal-box, in the bottom of which is formed a half-round groove to receive the journal of the car-axle, which passes in through a hole in the inner side of said box. The outer end of the box A is inclined and open, and is closed with a door, B, which is hinged at its lower edge. The upper edge of the door B is provided with a lug, b, which overlaps the top of the box A, and has a hole through it directly over a hole in the top of the box A, to receive the spring-key G, by which the said door is fastened when closed. The box A is provided with flanges a upon its top and sides, to receive the housing. D is the oil-cup, which is made of brass or other composition metal, and has a half round groove, 01, formed upon the lower side of its bottom, to receive and rest upon the journal. In the bottom of the cup D are formed a number of small holes, d, through which the oil escapes to the journal, and in which are placed pins E, to keep them clear, and facilitate the escape of the oil. To the front side of the cup D is secured an open glass tube, F, the lower end of which is connected with a hole in the lower part of the cup D, so that it can be seen, by simply opening the door B, how much oil there may be in the cup D. The oil is poured into the cup D through the key-hole in the top of the box A.
The pins E are intended to keep open and free the holes that convey the oil from the cup to the bearing-surface of the journal. This prevents the deposit of dust and the formation of gum while the flow of oil is greatly facilitated.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A journal-box oil-cup, D, whose bottom is provided with perforations and pins, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with oil-cup of journalbox, of a glass tube, F, connected therewith, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of box A, having top hole, door B, with overlapping lug, and the spring-key O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
