This invention relates toapparatus for driving piles, posts,-stakes,-etc.r and more particularly to apparatus which is "adaptable for use-with percussivejhammer type machines not ing."
One object of the invention isto provide improved accessory apparatus for pile driv- 10 replacement of parts 7 which may ,become broken or damaged in service. Another ob ject is to provide for application of the apparatus to a percussive machine in more than one position so that theposition 'bestsulted to the work may be's'elected. Still another Object is to prevent'loss of driving power when the percussive machine becomes tilted in relation to the work. In pile driving apparatus including a percussive machine having an impact piston, a front head secured to said machine and having a polygonal portion extending therebeyond with an axial bore therethrough, an anvil block having a stem received in said bore and a head beyond said polygonal portion, cheekplates secured to a selected pair of opposite faces of said polygonal portion to provide an extension inclosing said anvil head, said plates being shaped to provide a restricted socket for the object to be driven and a retaining shoulder for said piston head, and transverse securing members extending through said head on opposite sides of said bore and through said plates.
8. In a fluid pressure percussive machine of the portable type having a cylinder, an impact piston reciprocable therein, and a front head having perforated ears with through bolts extending through said ears for securing said head to said cylinder, said head beneath said ears being square and having axial grooves to permit the insertion of said bolts, and cheek plates secured to said head over said grooves and arranged to lock the heads of said bolts against turning.
9. In a fluid pressure percussive machine of the portable type having a cylinder, an impact piston reciprocable therein, and a front head having perforated ears with through bolts extending through said ears for securing said head to said cylinder, said head beneath said ears being square and having axial grooves to permit the insertion of said bolts, and cheek plates secured to said head over said grooves and having notches or recesses receiving the heads of said bolts to hold the same against turning.
10. A front head for a port-able percussive machine for adapting the latter to drive piles, posts, and the like, said head having a cylinder engaging part provided with perforated ears to receive the through bolts of the machine and a polygonal portion, said head having an axial bore therethrough to receive the stem of an anvil block, said polygonal portion being arranged to have cheek plates secured to a pair of the outer sides thereof to form an axial extension of inder engaging part provided with perforated ears to receive the through bolts of the machine and a polygonal portion, said head having an axial bore therethrough to receive the stem of an anvil block, said polygonal portion being arranged to have cheek plates secured to a pair of the outer sides thereof and having transverse bores through the solid portions thereof on opposite sides of said bore for bolts to hold the plates in place, said polygonal portion also having transverse recesses in the exterior thereof to receive projections on the cheek plates intended to prevent shearing of the bolts.

A cheek plate adapted to be secured to the front portion of a portable percussive machine, said plate havinga bend providing oflset portions in parallelism, one of said portions being adapted to engage said machine and having spacedrows of holes therethrough for bolts, a transverse lug or rib between said rows of holes to engage a complementary recess on the machine, the other portion of the plate being adapted to engage the work and the bend to form a retaining shoulder for an impact member on the machine.
13. In apparatus for driving piles and like objects having fiat tops, a percussive machine having a cylinder and an impact element reciproca-ble therein, a front head structure providing a chamber for receiving the upper end of the object to be driven, and a single member movably supported by said structure andcomprising the sole means for transmitting the blow of said impact element to the flat top of the object, said member having an enlarged elongate head disposed in the upper end of said chamber having a curved lower face to rest directly upon the flat upper face of the object so as to deliver the blow thereto without substantial loss of force even if the machine engages the object at an angle.
