This invention relates to electrical devices provided with terminals, and more particularly to electrical terminals and mountings for use with electrical coils.
In many instances in the ast the ractice of connecting electrical terminals wit terminal mountings consisted in securing the terminal to the terminal mounting by inserting a ferrule into aligned apertures in the terminal and terminal mountin and upsetting the ferrule to secure the terminal to the'mounting. Such a type of construction has been found to be susceptible to simplification and improvement, resulting in more economical production.
I An object of this invention is to provide a terminal and mountin constructlon for electrical devices which w ll effect economies in the cost of materials and in the time required to make the assembly.
In accordance with the general features of the invention there is provided in one embodiment thereof an electrical terminal which is so constructed that it. may be readily and conveniently secured to a coil mounting by engaging a. plurality of surfaces of the mounting. In its preferred form the 1mproved terminal comprises an elongated terminal portion by which the coil may be externally connected to electrical conductors or other electrical apparatus, and a loop portion adapted 'to be clamped about a portion of the coil mounting and designed to engage slots or apertures formed in the mounting. The end of the coil winding is clamped between the terminal portion and a co-operating oppositely disposed portion and may be substantially soldered or otherwise electrically en- ,gaged therebetween.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a multiple wound coil with avpluralit of terminal members of the type shown in igs. 3, 4 and 5 associated therewith. v Referring now to the drawings in detail in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, the preferred form of the improved terminal member, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a loop portion 7 b means of which the terminal member may e conveniently and securely clamped to an associated mounting, and an elongated terminal portion 8 which may be provided with an aperture 9 for convemence in making external electrical connections. -It will be understood that the loop portion 7 may be of any desired shape to con- 75 form with the contour of the su port or mounting to which it is to be secured. Thus, 4 in the present embodiment of the invention this loop portion is rectangular in shape to conform to a mounting 10 of rectangular cross section, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The mounting 10 may constitute an end support for an electrical coil 11, a ortion of which is shown in perspective in ig. 2. This type of mounting is usually provided with a cen-' tral aperture 12 for accommodating a core member 13. For convenience, the terminal members may be secured to the mounting 10 before it is assembled with the core 13, it be-. ingapparent that in so doing the central a erture 12 facilitates the insertion and positionin of the terminal members.
As s own in Fig. 1, the loop portion 7 of the completely formed terminal member comprises two upper horizontal sections 15 and 16 extending on opposite sides of the terminal portion 8, a lower horizontal section 18 and a pair of spaced vertical sections 19 and 20. The uppersections 15 and 16 engage the upper surface of the mounting 10 provided for receiving the vertical sections 1 possible displacement of the terminal mem-' 19 and 20, respectively, thus preventing any As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the loop portion 7 of the terminal member extends on opposite sides of the elongated portion 8. manner that they all engage a common central aperture, as shown in Fig. 2. Due to the relative position of the loop portions 7 with respect to the terminal portions 8, it will be obvious that the terminal portions of the terminals mounted in this manner will be suitably spaced from each other.
An end 21 of the coil winding is. clamped between the elongated portion 8 and a cooperating-vertically disposed portion 24 adjoining the upper section 16 of the loop portion (Fig. 1) The upper end of the portion 24 is bent outwardly to facilitate the insertion of the end of the coil winding which may subsequently be soldered to the engaging portions of the terminal in any suitable manner, preferably by dipping the terminals in a soldering fiuid.
A modified form of the improved terminal member is illustrated in Figs. 3 to 6, inclusive. It will be observed that this formof terminal member is very similar to the one shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in that it comprises a loop portion 30, an elongated terminal portion 31, and a portion 32 co-operating with the portion 31 to clamp an end 33 of a coil winding therebetween in the same manner as described above in connection with the terminal member shown in Fig. 1. The only material-difi'erence in the two forms is in the relative position of the loop portion with respect to the terminal portion. -In the preferred form the loop portion extends on opposite sides of the terminal portion, as hereinbefore described, whereas, in the modified form, the loop portion is disposed wholly on one side of the terminal portion, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The latter type of terminal members are particularly suitable for use with a multiple wound coil 34, a portion of which is illustrated in perspective in Fig. 6. This type of coil is usually provided with a rectangu-. lar end support 35. A plurality of apertures or slots 36 are formed in the support 35 for receiving the elongated portions 31 of (Jo-operating marginal slots 37 may be provided in the support 6'5 35 for more rigidly securing the terminal members thereto.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will beobserved that the loop portion 30 is substantially rectangular in shape and completely surrounds a portion of the support 35. The lower end of the elongated portion 31 formsone side of the rectangular loop and engages the aperture 36.'. Horizontal sections 38 and 39 of the loop engage the upper and bottom surfaces, respectively, of the support and a vertical section 40 engages the marginal slot 37 It will be understood that the improved terminals hereinbefore described may be quickly and economically formed from metallic strips and that these terminals may be readily and conveniently secured to various forms of mountings or supports. It may be advantageous, in some instances, to partially or completely form theterminal before it is associated with the support, thus eliminating bending or forming of the terminal upon the support.
Although the invention, as herein illustrated and described, is particularly applicable to terminal members for terminating windings .of electrical coils, it is to be understood that the novel features of the invention are capable of various other applications within the scope of the appended claims. 1
What is claimed is:
1. In an electrical device, a mounting plate having a marginal slot and a co-operating opening spaced inwardly therefrom, both the slot and opening extending transversely through the'plate, and a terminal member comprlsing a loop portion and an elongated terminal portion which is disposed at right angles to the plate, said loop portion engaging the slot and opening and extending around the portion of the mounting intermediate the slot and the opening.
2. In an electrical terminal, a mounting plate having rectangular slots, and a flat strip of metal secured to the plate by insertion of one end of the strip through the slots, said inserted portion of the strip being bent around the mounting plate and having its end portion impinging against the remainder of the flat strip to serve as a clamp for a conductor. a
3. In an electrical terminal, a mounting plate having slots extending transversely therethrough, and a flat strip of metal disposed perpendicularly to the plate, said flat strip having one end extending through the slots and gripping the plate and terminating in a portion yieldably engaging the perpendlClllflIflPOItlOIl for clamping a conductor therebetween. p
4. In an electrical terminal, a mounting plate having a pair of separated slots disposed therein spaced at a distance substantially greater than the thickness of the plate, a flat strip of metal having its greater portion extending away from and perpendicular to the mounting plate and one end extending through the pair of slots and bent into a loop to securely grip the entire portion of the mounting plate disposed between the slots, the loop terminating in a portion yieldably engaging the perpendicular portion for clamping a conductor therebetween.
5. In an electrical device, a terminal mounting having a marginal groove and a slot spaccd'inwardly therefrom, and a terminal member comprising an open rectangular loop portion surrounding a portion of the mounting intermediate the marginal groove and the slot, the loop portion terminating in a straight terminal portion and an opposite end portion yieldably engaging the terminal portion for clamping a connecting element therebetween.
