Description
Sept; 15, 1931. w. SECUNDA LOCK FOR COLLAPSIBLE COTS Filed May 8. 1930 ATTORN EY WITNESSES Patented Sept. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE WILLIAM sEc'UNnA, orpnooxmm, ivnw YORK LOCK FOR COLLAPSI BLE COTS Application filed May 8, 1930. Serial No. 450,794.
The invention comprehends a lock for collapsible cots which is cheap to manufacture and which has body members pivoted to brackets, novel, strong and durable means being provided to lock the body members relatively to the brackets.
The invention further comprehends a lock of the class described in which a leg of a collapsible cot has a bracket member with a flange, to which body members are pivoted, the body members also having flanges for engaging the flange on the bracket member for locking purposes.
The invention further comprehends a lock of the class described in which a leg of the cot has a bracket member secured to its side with a flange extending therefrom and a second bracket member secured to the other side of the leg, a body member being disposed between the bracket members and pivoted thereto, and being provided with a flange which engages the first mentioned flange when the body member is in normal position for locking purposes.
Another object of the invention is to pivot the body member to a bracket member, the body member being positioned to engage the leg when the flange on the body member engages the flange on the bracket member, for locking purposes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lock for collapsible cots having a body member disposed between two bracket members which are secured to opposite sides 5 of a leg, the width of the leg at the brackets being reduced substantially to the width of the body member to hold the body member snugly bet-ween the bracket members, there being a flange on the body member engaging a flange on one of the bracket members when the parts are in normal position and the body member is locked against the leg.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of the invention is described.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views,
A of which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragment of a cotto which myinvention is applied, b
Figure 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view illustrating my invention with the body members in normal position relatively to the bracket member, and I Figure 4 is a sideelevation, a part being broken away to illustrate the construction.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the cot is provided with body members 10 which ma be supported at their outer ends in any desired manner, the body members 10 at their inner ends 11 being pivoted to an outer bracket member 12 and to an inner bracket member 18.
These bracket members 12 and 13 are spaced apart and the inner bracket member 13 is secured to the inner side 14 of the top of the leg 15 and the outer bracket member 12 is secured to the outer side 16 of the top of the leg 15, this being clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings. These bracket members 12 and 13 are preferably riveted to the leg 15, but it will be understood that they may be secured to the leg 15 in any desired manner, the top of the leg 15 serving to hold the bracket members 12 and 13 spaced apart. body members 10 are disposed between the bracket members 12 and. 13, one at each side of the leg15, and the said inner ends 11 of the body members 10 are secured to the bracket members 12 and 13 by pivots 17.
The sides 14 and 16 of the upper end of the leg 15 are disposed close together so that the width of the leg between its sides 14 and 16 will be substantially the same width as the body members 10. This will serve to prevent any lateral movement of the inner ends 11 of the body members 10.
The inner bracket members 13 have inwardly disposed flanges 18 and these flanges 18 are engaged by inwardly disposed flanges 19 on the body members 10. It'will, there fore, be seen that when the body members 10 are disposed horizontally and substantially at right angles to the leg 15, the flanges 19 on the body members 10 will engage the The ends 11 of the flanges 18 on the inner bracket members 13. It will also be seen by referring to Figure 4 of the drawings that when the body members 10 are in horizontal positions, at their in- .ner ends they will engage the leg 15 so that ment of the flanges 19 with the flanges 18' on the inner bracket member 13, but also by the engagement of their inner ends 11 with the leg 15. 1
Preferably there are two of these legs 15, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings an these legs 15 are connected by braces 20 which will prevent the lateral movement of the legs 15 relatively to each other.
As has been stated, the outer ends of the body members 10 may be supported by any desired means. The flanges 18 on the inner bracket members 13 are preferably provided with apertures 21 to which members such as springs 22 may be secured for supporting a canvas or other member 23.
By referring to Figure 1 of the drawings it will be seen that the member 23 is secured by the springs 22 or other suitable means to the flanges 19 on the body members 10.
What is claimed is:
In a collapsible cot, a side rail comprising two aligned and spaced-apart body members, each composed of angle iron with the horizontal flange directed inwardly of the cot, the horizontal flanges of both members cut away near their adjacent ends to form edge abutments perpendicular to the length of the body members and the vertical flanges of both members directed down- Wardly, an outer bracket overlying the ad jacent ends of the vertical flanges on the outer side of the body members consisting of a flat plate having its upper edge flush with the upper surface of the horizontal flanges of the body members, a vertical leg rigidly connected to the inner face of said bracket, the upper connected portion of the leg being flat and equal in thickness to the vertical flanges of the body portions and being abutted on each verical edge by an end of one of the said vertical flanges, the upper extremity of the leg being flush with the upper edge of said bracket, an inner bracket member lying opposite the outer bracket member and composed of a short length of angle iron with its vertical flange directed downwardly and overlying the inner face of the vertical flanges of the body members and with its horizontal flange in the same plane as the horizontal flanges of the body member and having its ends abutting the said abutment edges of the horizontal flanges, pivot members, one on each side' of the leg, each pivot member passing ly locked against an edge of the flattened part of the leg and the abutments of the horizontal flanges resiliently locked against the horizontal flange of the inner bracket member.
