Description
C. C. BERG-H.
TOOL-HOLDER.
Patented Sept. 19, 1876.
' No.18Z,344.
UIIIIIIIIIIIIIII E 'N-IPFI'ERSI PNOTOJJTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN G. BERGH, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOOL-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,344, dated September 19, 1876; application filed h July 1, 1876.
. ing an extension-rod fixed on a vertical pin at one end, and having at the other end a chuck in which the tool to be sharpened is fastened to be swung forward and, backward, with its point bearing on the oil-stone, which is placed at such inclination that the bevel of the tool bears fair on. the face of. the stone.
The drawingrepresents a sectional elevation ot'niy improved tool-holder; also parts of the chuck or tool clamping device in detail.
A and B represent the two sections of the extension-rods, one of which is tubular, and receives the other, which is fastened in it, as required, by the set-screw G. Section A has a transverse tube, D, on the end, which is titted on the vertical pivot E, projecting from the bench F, and regulated in its position thereon by the stop-ring G. H, I, and J represent a kind of clamping-chuck in which the tool Kis to be presented to the oil-stone L in the manner shown. The said chuck is composed of a cylindrical piece, having a threaded stemv on which the nut J is screwed. The piece H has a transverse perforation to receive the tool to be sharpened, and when the former is drawn downward by turning the nut J, the tool is clamped upon the annular Washer a, which encircles the piece H, and rests on the cylindrical cup-shaped socket 1, formed on or attached to the end of rod B. The tool is guided by swinging the holder backward and forward with the tool resting upon the base of the stone.
It will be readily seen that the tool will always be presented rightly to the stone, and
the point will be sharpened 0n the same bevel, thus saving much labor and also saving the tool, which does nor require to be ground so much. The holder may also be used for grinding the faces of precious stones.
Having thus described my invention, I claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A tool-holder, consisting of an extensionrod, A B, and a clamping-chuck, H I J, mounted on a vertical pivot, E, substantially as specified.
