IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182,062, dated September 12, 1876; application filed February 8, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES OORNWELL,

of No. 129 Bainbridge street, city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorway-Swings for the use and amusement of children; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

The same letters of reference apply to the same parts in the several figures.

Figure 1 represents a section of a doorway, with side elevation of my swing depending therefrom. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the adjustable fastening by which the rope is secured to the seat.

Ais alintel over the doorway, having moldings on each side in the usual manner, .on which rest the hooks B B, in pairs. A'strap, C, is passed through the eyes in the lower ends of the hooks, to the lower ends of which is attached a snap-hook, D. From the snap-hook 1) depends the rope E, which passes through the loop in cords H and H, and through the holes in the seat F. The hinged back G is secured to the seat F and held in place by the looped cords H H. J is the hole in the seat and back, through which the cord or rope is first passed. It then passes across underneath or behind, and up and through the hole K, then across and downward or back through the hole L. Now it remains but to pass the end of the rope or cord through between the seat or back and the part of the rope or cord reaching from J to K, in order to form a secure fastening that is readily adjustable.

I will now proceed to more fully describe the operation of my invention. A loop is formed on one end of thestrap (J, through which the other end is passed, after having passed through the eye in the hook on one side of the cross-beam or lintel of the doorway; then the strap is extended across under the lintel and passed through the eye in the hook on the other side, downward and back ward; then, if it is again passed through the loop first made on the strap and pulled downward, it will be found to have strained the hooks down hard on the molding, and at the same time so firmly confined them to the side of the lintel that any oscillation of the strap 0 will not dislodge them so long as there is any weight depending therefrom.

It should be noticed that the eyes of the hooks are above the lower edge of the lintel, and the strap is used as an extension of the rope, in order to more fully protect the molding and wood-work from abrasion, which pressure of the rope would cause in a greater degree than the flat surface of the strap.

A snap-hook, D, is attached to the pendent end of the strap (3, in order that the rope E may be readily removed when not in use.

The rope Ebeing passed through the seat and secured, as before mentioned, any weight or pressure on the seat will draw the cord tightly down over the loose end, thus making it'fixed at any length desired.

The looped cords which extend from the pendent side ropes renders the back in like manner adjustable at any angle with the seat that is desired.

These adjustments being made very readily near the ground or floor, enable each childthat wishes to adjust the swing entirely to his or her satisfaction, as there is no knotting of cords or ropes, and when adjusted the swing is entirely secure while in use.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a doorway-swing, the hooks B B, in combination with the looped strap 0 or cord E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,

2. The seat F, having the holes J, K, and L, in combination with the side ropes E E, the

whole constructed and arranged substantially as desceibed.
