WASTE RECEPTACLE Original Filed Dec. 17. 1928 16 i /4 INVENTOR 3 ATTORNE. 5
Patented Aug." 25, 1931 UNITED STATES SOL L. BUSCHMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
PATENT] OFFICE ASSIGNOR, BY 'MEsNE ASSIGNMENTS,.TO
METAL PACKAGE CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATIQN DELA- WARE Application filed December 17, 1928, Serial No. 326,503. Renewed April 29', 1931. v
This invention relates to sanitarywaste or garbage cans or receptacles employing an outer container, an inner waste-receiving receptacle and a cover hinged to said outer container. I
The principal object of the invention is the production of a device of the above character which shall be strong'a-nd simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is the production of a foot-actuated mechanism which shall not only raise the cover and the inner receptacle to permit ready access thereto but which shall begin the raising movement of the cover prior to that of the receptacle thereby obviating any engagement of one with the other.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear from the accompanying description. v o
In the accompanying drawings:
' Fig. 1 is a section taken through a device constructed in accordance withmy invention showing the cover in closed position.
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the bottom'of the receptacle.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1 but showing the cover in open position.
Referring to the several figures described:
1 indicates the body of the outer container which is provided with beads or curled edges 2 and 3 respectively at its upper and lower edges'to present a smooth appearance. Said container is preferably open at both ends thereof and has a plurality of angle pieces 4 riveted or otherwise securedto its inner side adjacent the lower edge which normally support the inner waste-receiving receptacle 5 as shown in Fig. 1. The upper edge of the receptacle is supplied'with ears 6 which receive the hooked ends of a bail7. When not in use the bail lies on the forward upper edge of the receptacle where it is readily accessible but where it will not become soiled by garbage or other refuse thrown into the receptacle.
The cover for the outer container is indicated at 8 and is provided with perforated ears at its rear end which register with similar ears on the container body all of which .tion is. completing the opening of the cover.
ears receive a pin '9 whereby a hinged connection is established between the coverand container. A strap 10 is also secured to the coverand is provided with a right-angled flange 11 which is perforated to receive the 5 upper hooked end of a link 12. Adjacent the lower end of the outer container and lying beneath the inner receptacle is an actuator comprising a horizontally disposed rock shaft 13 of the configuration shown which is journalled nearits ends in bearing openings in the body of the container diametrically opposite to each other. The forward end of said rock shaft which extends, through the body is bent in the direction shown to form a foot treadle 14* while the rear end which extends through the container body is bent to form a crank arm 15 terminating in a rearwardly extending end 16 extending through an opening in the link 12 to which it is held from disconnection by the pin 17.
The operation of the device will be obvious. When the parts are in the position v shown in Fig. 1 and the treadle 14 is pressed Z5 downwardly, the crank 15 immediately begins to pull the link 12 downwardly and to raise the cover 8 on its hinge. Inasmuch as a space normally obtains intermediate the rock shaft 13 and the receptacle 5 there is no =30 engagement between the two until the cover has been raised a certain distance. Thereupon the rock shaft engages the receptacle and presses it upwardly into the position o shown in Fig. 3 while the link 12 byits ac- 5 When in the position shown in this figure the bail 7 of the receptacle is readily accessibleso that the receptacle may be removed I and its contents emptied. When the treadle is released the receptacle automatically falls 'backinto its original position on the angle pieces 'and the cover falls into closed position by gravity. V V
The. advantage of theabove construction is that but a single device is employed to open the cover and raise the receptacle. Also that there is never any contact between the cover and receptacle thereby eliminating rattle and noise'and damaging and marring the parts. 1
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a device of the character described, a container, a cover hinged thereto, a rock shaft journalled in the Wall of said container, said shaft being provided at its forward end with a treadle and at its rear end with a crank, a link connecting said crank and said cover and a receptacle supported Within said container and normally spaced from said rock shaft and adapted to be raised Within the container by said rock shaft.
2. In a device of the character described, a container, a cover hinged thereto, a receptacle supported within said container and single means for first partially opening said cover and. subsequently completing said opening and raising said receptacle by pressure against the under wall thereof S'l.1I1Ul taneously.
3. In a device of the character described, a container, a rock shaft extending therethrough and provided at its rear end with a. crank and at its forward end with a treadle, a cover hinged to said container, a link connecting said cover and crank, a receptacle within said container and means fastened to the inner side of the wall of said container adjacent said rock shaft for supporting said receptacle in spaced relation to said rock shaft, said rock shaft being adapted to press said receptacle upwardly within said container upon actuation of said treadle. Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this fifteenth day of December A. D. 1928.
