Description
1931- R. A POUCHAIN ET AL 1,818,908
VENTILATED CONTAINER Filed March 5, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet l Patente Aug. 11, 1931 PATENT OFFICE RENE A. POUCHAIN, OF ELKINS PARK, AND FRANCIS S. FOX, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SY LVANIA, ASSIGNORS T TAS'IY BAKING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- SYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA VENTILATED CONTAINER Application filed. March 5, 1930. Serial No. 433,455.
This invention relates to a ventilated container for packing certain varieties of pastry so that air may circulate through the container and reach the goods packed therein.
The construction of the container forming the subject of the invention will be ful- 1y disclosed hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of the complete container, showing the lid in the open position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on.
the line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 33, Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of one of the inner containers.
The main container comprises a bottom 1, front wall 2, back wall 8, end walls 4, 4 and a lid 5 hinged to the back wall 3 along the upper edge 6 thereof. The lid 5 is provided with a fiap 7 adapted, when the container is closed, to lie immediately adjacent the inner side of the front wall 2. The main container is also provided with end flaps 8,8 adapted to be folded inwardly under the lid 5.
' The front, backand end walls are provided With openings 10, through which air is permitted to enter the container, the flap 7 of the lid 5 also having openings 9 which are adapted to align with the openings 10 of the front wall 2 when the lidis closed.
Located in the bottom of the main container is a corrugated sheet 11 and resting on the upper side of thissheet is a plurality of inner containers 15 inwhich the merchandise is packed.
Each of the inner containers 15 comprises j a bottom 16 having perforations 17 therein. Around-all sides of the container 15 the bottom 16 thereof joins with angularly disposed side walls 18 which terminate in straight side walls 19 adjacent the upper edge of the inner container.
Each inner container also includes a cover 20 comprising a flat top 21 having a windowopening 22 formed therein. Around the flat portion 21 the top 20 is provided with a depending flange 23 which engages the straight sides 19 of the inner container bodies.
The window opening 22 in each of the covers 20 of the inner containers 15 is closed by a sheet of transparent material 25, such as Glazine so that the contents of the container will be visible and at the same time be protected.
The inclined sides 18 of the inner containers form air channels 26, 26 within the main container which extend around and across the 'main container. The corruga tions of the sheet 11 form air passages 27 which communicate with the air passages 26, and permit a circulation of air through the container from and through the openings 10 in the walls of the outside container to and through the openings 17 in the toms of the inner containers 15.
The container described above is particularly adaptable for use with pastry having a moist filling, such as pies, tarts, cream puffs, etc., the principle involved being that the moisture from the filling is allowed to pass to the atmosphere from the crust or body portion of the pastry, by way of the openings in the inner and outer containers and the air passages communicating therewith, so that the crust or body of the pastry does not become moist and soggy.
I claim:
1. The combination of an outer container comprising perforated side walls, a bottom provided with air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said perforated side walls, and an inner container having a perforated bottom resting on the channeled bottom in the outer container.
2. The combination of an outer container comprising perforated side walls, a bottom provided with air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said perforated side walls, an inner container aving a perforated bottom resting on the channeled bottom in the outer container, and inclined side walls providing air channels adjacent the side walls of the outer container and communicating with the air channels in the bottom of the outer container.
3. The combination of an outer container comprising perforated side walls, a bottom provided w1th air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said rforated'side walls, an inner container fi ving a perforated bottom resting on the channeled bottom in the outer container, and inclined side walls providing air channels extending at right angles to and communicating with the air channels in the bottom of the outer container.
4. The combination of an outer container comprising perforated side walls, a bottom provided with air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said perforated side walls, a pluralityof inner containers each having a perforated bottom resting on the channeled bottom in the outer container and inclined side walls collectively forming a circumferential air channel ex-, tending around the outer container adjacent the inner surface of the perforated side walls of the outer container, said circumferential air channel communicating with the air channel in the bottom of the outer container.
5. The combination of an outer container comprising perforated side walls, a bottom provided with air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said perforated side walls, a plurality of inner containers each having a perforated bottom' resting on the channeled bottom in the outer c'containerand inclined side walls collectively forming a circumferential air channel extending around the outer container adjacent the inner surface of the perforated side walls of the outer container and also forming intermediate air channels extending across the outer container between adjacentl positioned inner containers, said circum erential air channel and said intermediate air channels communicating with the air channels in the bottom of the outer container. 1
6. The combination of an outer container e comprising perforated side walls, a bottom provided with air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said perforated side walls, a plurality. of inner containers each having a perforated bottom resting on the channeled bottom in the outer container and inclined sidewalls collectively forming av circumferential air channel extending around the outer container adjacent the inner surface of the perforated side walls of the outer container and also forming 'intermediate air channels extending across the outercontainer between adjacently positioned inner containers, said circumferent1al air channel and said intermedlate a1r channels communicating with the air channels in the bottom of the outer container, and a cover on said outer container having a perforated flap adapted to be inserted between one of the perforated side walls of the outer container and the inner containers adjacent thereto, the perforations in the said flap being adapted to align with the perforations in the said side wall.
7. The combination of an outer container comprising perforated side walls, a corrugated sheet disposed in the bottom of the outer container providing air channels extending between an oppositely disposed pair of said perforated side walls, a plurality of inner containers each having a perforated bottom resting on the corrugated sheet disposed in the bottom of the outer container and inclined side walls collectively forming a circumferential air channel extending around the outer container adjacent the inner surface of the perforated side walls of the outer container and also forming intermediate air channels extending across the outer container between adjacently positioned inner containers, said circumferential air channel and said intermediate air channels communicating with the air channels in the bottom of the outer container, and a cover on said outer container having a perforated flap adapted to be inserted between one of the perforated side walls of the outer container and the inner containers adjacent thereto, the perforations in the said flap being adapted to align with the perforations in the said side wall,
