UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
URIAH D. MIHILLS, OF FOND DU LAG, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,861, dated September 5, 1876; application filed April 25, 1876.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, URIAH D. MIHILLS, of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Pin, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a side view; Fig. 2, partly in section; Fig. 3, atop view of my improved clothes-pin.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved clothespin, which is made in such a manner that the splitting is prevented, while the same may be handled with greater convenience, being brought down close to the line, so that the vibrations of the pin by the action of the wind, and the consequent chafing and wearing of the clothes on the points, is avoided.
The invention consists of a clothes-pin with a notched wooden cross-key secured to the head of the pin.
In the drawing, A represents a wooden clothes-pin of the usual shape, with a square, round, or other head; and B, a wooden key, that is centrally notched in square, concave, orother manner, so as to form end shoulders, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The key B is applied at right angles to the head, being driven by suitable machinery through the recess in the head of the pin when the pin is in soft state, either green or steamed. By the seasoning of the pin, the wood is forced into the notch of the key, and thereby the key rigidly secured.
The key is preferably made of hard wood, while the pin is of soft Wood, so that a firm and permanent connection of the same is obtained, while the splitting of the pin is prevented, as the shoulders of the key press on the jaws of the pin.
The key conveniently serves as a handle for the pin, and admits the bringing down of the pin close to the line, to prevent, by its rigid position thereon, the chafing of the clothes by the points, and also the readier taking off of the pins by means of the projecting parts of the key.
The points of the pin may be of curved or tapering shape, or provided with recesses back of the points, or otherwise, as desired, the strengthening of the head by the cross-key and the easier handling of the pin being the main object.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Aclothes-pin provided with a notched crosskey driven through the head, and extending at right angles, substantially as specified.
URIAH D. MIHILLS.
