CHAIR Filed Sept. 16. 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 'Invenior 5 aw-97.7, WWW/26 Patented Aug. 4, 1931 PATENT GFFHIE GREEN W. WALKER, OF HARDIN, MISSOURI CHAIR Application filed September 16, 1929.
The present invention relates to chairs and has for its prime object to provide means whereby a rocking chair may be easily and quickly transformed into a rolling chair particularly adapted for patients, invalids and the like.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a chair of this nature which is exceedingly simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts, and in the unique relation of the members, and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, or as more completely outlined herein.
To en able others skilled in the art to'fully comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of ref erence denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the chair adjusted for rocking purposes,
Figure 2 is a similar view adjusted for wheeling purposes,
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a perspective View of a prop frame,
Figure 5 is adetail elevation of the forward end of one of the arms, and
Figure 6 is a detail elevation showing an intermediate portion of one of the arms with the wheel mounted thereon.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that any preferred type of chair 5 may be used mounted on the front legs 6 and rear legs 7. A rung 8 is disposed between upper portions of the legs 6. Elongated bars or arms 9 are rockably engaged by means of straps or other suitable means 10 with the rung 8 and are curved downwardly and ex- Serial No. 392,928.
tend rearwardly as is clearly shown in Fig ures 1 and 2 to terminate adjacent the rear end of the rockers 11 on the lower ends of the legs 6 and 7. Brackets 12 are engaged with intermediate portions of the bars 9 support 0 an axle 14 having wheels 1% journaled on the ends thereof.
This frame comprises prop members 20 connected together by tie rods 21. The lower ends of the prop members 20 are pivotally engaged with the bars 9 while seat extensions 22 are formed on their upper ends to engage with the rung 16.
hen the frame F is in the position shown in Figure 1 this attachment does not in any way interfere with the rocking of the shaft but by rocking the chair forwardly the frame F may be engaged in the position shown in Figure 2 and then by rocking the chair rearwardly it will be supported on the wheeled attachment.
The method of use and operation of the device is thought to be clear from the above description, further detail discussion thereof is thought to be unnecessary.
It is, therefore believed that the present invention provides a simple and practical device adapted to accomplish, among'others, all the advantages and objects above set forth.
lVithout further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the invention that others can by applying current knowledge readliy adapted for various applications without omitting certain features that, from the standpoint of the prior art, thoroughly constitutes essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this in vention, and therefore such adaptation should and are intended to be comprehended as fall within the meaning and range of equivalency of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A wheeled attachment for rocker chairs comprising a pair of bars adapted to be rockably engaged at one end with a rung of the chair connecting the front legs of the chair, said bars respectively curving downwardly and extending rearwardly of the chair, a wheel journalled on each of the bars intermediate the ends of the bars, casters swivelly mounted on the free ends of said bars, prop members pivotally engaged With the bars adjacent the free ends of the bars, said prop members at their upper free ends provided with extensions capable of engaging a rung connecting the rear legs of the chair when said wheels and casters are in ground engaging position whereby to support the rocker above the round on said wheeled attachments.
2. A wheeled attachment for chairs comprising in combination a pair of approximately identically shaped bars provided at one end with means for rockably engaging a rung of the chair, an axle supported transversely between the bars, wheels journalled on said axle casters mounted on the free ends of the bars, a frame structure rockably engaged with the bars adjacnt said free ends and comprising a pair of prop members respectively provided at their upper ends with a rung engaging extension, and capable of engaging a. second rung of the chair whereby said chair may be wholly supported on said wheeled extension, and tie rods connecting said prop members.
In testimony whereof: I aflix my signature.
GREEN V. WALKER.
