Aug. '4, 1931. I G; B. BAMAN '1,817,286 l FABRICATED PACKAGE Filed Dec. 25. 1929 Pfgv [LV vi131 'WITNESSES' ari,
Patented Aug. 4, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE B. BEAMAN, F GRAFTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SUPERIOR PAPER PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF CARNEGTE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION 0F DELA- WARE FABRICATED PACKAGE Application led December 23, 1929. Serial No. 415,924.
his-invention relates to packages and cartons of the type employed for packagying articles for shipment, and it has for itsI y primary object the provision ofa package j inwhich various commodities may be dependably packed for shipment at a very *low cost with a minimum amount of labor i and care.
Another object is to provide a package A'10 of this character in which a systematically y organized and cooperatively associated arrangement of packing and spacing members are utilized for holding the articles from shifting about in thev casing employed in .i .15 the package, and also for yieldably spacing tion will become more apparent when the following detailed descri tion is read in conn n C 1 n Junction with tne accompanying drawings Y of which Fig. 1 is a sectional view taken vertically through a package constructed in 2.3.5 accordance with this invention in which an elongate cylinder is encased; Fig. 2 is a Y Vhorizontal sectional view looking at one end of asimilarly constructed package; Fig. 3 vis a plan view of a spacer member used intermediate the ends of the package; Fig. 4
is a similar view of an end spacer member;
and Figs.V 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are end views of various forms of packing members.
Having reference now to the drawings,- and irst tok Fig.. 1, theinvention is illustrated as being embodied in a package in which a glass cylinder 1 of the type employed in gasoline dispensing pumps is shown packed for shipment. The package as illustrated comprises a paper board box or casing 2 having dimensions somewhat larger but substantially approximating those of the cylinder 1. For spacing the cylinder or whatever obiect may be placed in the package from the end and side walls of the casing, packing members 3 are employed. These members are preferably positioned at the opposite ends of the casing with portions extending between the ends of the cylinder and the end walls of the package and other portions extending between the side walls ofthe cylinder and package whereby spacing the cylinder from both the end and side walls of the casing and also holding it in fixed position therein so that it will not shift about in the casing when the package is moved.
In order that the cylinder will not be broken or otherwise damaged when the package is tumbled or tossed about, the pack ing members are made of some suitable yiel'dable material capable of absorbing the deleterious forces imparted in such way to the package, thus preventing them from being transmitted to the cylinder. Packing members of this type may be made of various materials, such as corrugated paper board and the like which are particularly adapted because of their strong flexible cellular-like structure, for uses of this nature. In making these members out of corrugated paper board, the paper board is first cut in strips of correct lengt-h and width and then folded upon themselves to the desired shape, and preferably in the shapes illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. After being folded in the desired shape they are bound together with strips 5 of adhesive tape or other suitable binding devices.
For preventing the packing members from getting out of the place in the packing case, and for simplifying their arrangement therein, spacer members 4 of the shape shown in Fig. 4 are employed. These spacer members comprise simply plain stamped or cut blanks of paper board having notches 6 cut in their sides for the reception of the vertically disposed portions of the L-shaped packing members extending along the side Walls of the casing. Hence when placed in Cil ' jects are encountered.
position they firmly hold the packing members in place and at the same time form aV false or resilient inner Wall for the package.
When the articles being packaged are elongate in form such as the cylinder l, or comprise a number ofl disks such as phonograph records, it is desirable to include packing means intermediate the ends of Vthep'ackf age to .prevent thearticles from shifting,
and also' protect them against injury dueto the side Walls collapsing When other b- To simply reinforce the side Walls, packing members 7 of the ferm shown in FigfB'maybe Vpositioned about the sides of the article 4in the same manner ythat `the end packing members are V"bers 4Packing members .25V ,Y

`arranged. For holding such members in place a spacer member' 8 of the type shown in Fig. 3 iis arranged in the casing in the Idesired position, and if necessary attachedA `to the Walls of the casing by adhesive tape orothejr suitable means, notches Qbeing cut Iin the .blank to engage the packing meni- 7 of the form shoWninFig. ,8 are valsog'especially adapted land Where necessary spacer members l may be used tohold'them in place.
Another method of -reinforcing"the side Walls ofthe casing and providing packing l A'1'iiaterial betweenthe Walls 4and lthe articles placed inthe casing is toformthe Ipacking members in ,the shape shown in Fig. 7.
VWhenlpacking members such as frthis 'are Viised, the' elongate portion ll definitely V spaces the articlesfrom theside lWalls of the casing, along their entire length.-
, I It Will be appreciatedrby those skilled in 'vniany rd iffereiit shapes depending on'the j tlie'art that the packing members be made-in a number of different Ways, and" y When made of cellular l'paper :board as Well as other' material they niaybe folded vin shapes of the articles being packaged.l
jWhilel the invention 4is illustrated here ,750 in'fconnection'yvith af package especially vfadapted for packaging cylindrical and disk- .shaped articles such-as phonograph records,
itwill-.be lreadily lunderstood that it may be applied toV various other shapesof articles. r
fVVith round articles as illustrated, fthe I maximum' protection is aiferded the articles by placing the packing members midway *betv'veenthe'opposite corners of they casing 'so 4that they will j make tangential' engagev.nient With the sides'of, the articles. But
-with "articles of other shapes, asiivvill 4v*be* i kr'eadily appreciated, thepacking members may be 4disposed in various other yrelations aboutthe ends of the package accordingV to Vthe shape of the articles to provide the same form. of protection.
The chief advantage of the invention resides in the simplicity of vthe packing ar- Y rangement `and the easevwith which it may be applied to a package and the security Which is afforded by it.
According to the provisions of the pat-ent statutes, l have explained theprinciple and Voperation of my invention, and'have illustrated and described what l noivjconsider to .represent its best embodiment. However, l desire to have it understood that,
'Within the Sscop'e ofthe appended claims the an 'article packedl in thev carton from the' side walls ofthe casing, sai-dre'silient members being arrangedniidway ofthe sides of the casing and, wallsand'maintained inkpo- Sition by the spacer member.
