This invention relates to conveying mechanism and more particularly to fuel conveying mechanism for a locomotive stoker.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision in a locomotive stoker of new and improved means for conducting the fuel in a direct course from the tender to the firing opening in the backhead of the locomotive. A further object of the invention is to simplify, lighten and improve the efliciency of transferring mechanism for moving fuel from the fuel bin of a locomotive tender to a point of discharge into the firebox of the locomotive.
Other and further objects and advantages will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of" a portion of the locomotive and tender, showingg the invention in position thereon;

Refe'rringnow to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates a locomotive having a firebox 11 provided in its rear wall with a hand firing opening 12 which may be and preferably is the usual hand firing opening. The locomotive 10 is provided with the usual deck 13, and the tender shown at 15 is provided with a floor 14 having a fuel openin 16 therethrough, through which fuel is supp ied by gravity to the trough portion 17 of the transfer conduit 18 as is usual in' such constructions. The transfer conduit 18 comprises the trough portion 17 and the tubular extension 19 leading forwardly from the trough por-- tion 17 and then bent upwardly extending toward the firing opening. The transfer conduit 18 is formed of a single casting thereby eliminating a joint at the bend in the conduit providing a rigid, durable, simple and economical construction. A suitable member 26 as will resently appear.
The mouth mem er 26 is rigidly attached to the backhead, of the locomotive by suitable means, such as the bolts 27, and communicates at its forward end with the firing opening 12. In the preferred embodiment of the invention as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the
mouth member 26 extends rearwardly and downwardly terminating beneath the cab deck 13 in a vertically split flange 28 arranged to receive the ball member 29 of the conduit 18 thereby affording universal movement between the conduit 18 and mouth member 26.

Suitable means is'provided for operating the sectional screw conveyer 20. A motor 29 is mounted on the tender and operates the sectional screw conveyer 20 from the rear end thereof by the angularly arranged power shaft 30 through the spur gears 31 and 32, see Fig. 2. The power shaft 30 is provided with universal joints 33 and 34 at its end portions for accommodating its angular position relative to the motor and the gears.
The mouth member 26 discharges upon a distributor plate 35 which projects through the firing opening 12 and is provided at its rearward end with a distributor head 36 having jet openings 37 arranged to discharge a blast of pressure fluid over the face of the plate whereby fuel delivered to the plate is scattered into the firebox in aerial paths.

It will be apparent that I have provided a novel conveying system that is chea to manufacture, simple in construction, aving a minimum number of parts and that is efiicient in operation.
I claim:
1. In combination, a locomotive provided with fire-box having a backwall with a firing opening therein, a tender,a fuel convegin system comprising a tubular conduit Xe rigidly to said backwall and communicating with said firing opening, a unitary transfer under pressure from the conduit composed of a rearward substantially horizontally disposed portion movably mounted on the tender and an upwardly inclined forward portion at its forward end flexibly attached to and in end to end relation with the rearward end of said tubular conduit, and a sectional screw in said transfer conduit comprising the sole fuel advancing means in said fuel conveying system comprising a screw section in said rearward portion and a screw section in said forward portion, the latter section terminating adacent the rearward end of said tubular conduit and the two screw sections being universally connected at the 'uncture of the rearward and forward portions of the transfer conduit.
2. In combination, a locomotive provided with a fire-box having a backwall with a firing opening therein, a cab and deck therefor, a tender, a fuel conveying system comprising a tubular conduit fixed rigidly to said backwall and communicating with said firing opening, the aforesaid conduit extending rearward and downward from said opening to a point beneath said deck, a unitary transfer conduit composed of a rearward substantially. horizontally disposed portion mov-' ature.
