Application filed March 7,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a tent.
One object of the invention is to provide a tent of the character described whose parts are so secured together that the tent covering and supporting framework constitute, substantially, a unitary structure and may be readily collapsed to be transported and easily erected in place when it is desired to use the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tent of the character described, the supporting poles of which are confined in pockets of the covering and are completely protected from the weather and maintained at all times in readiness for use, said poles being connected by means of toggle bars whereby the covering may be stretched in erection of the tent, to the required degree of tautness.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, arrange ment of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 shows a perspective View of the tent.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view thereof taken from a different angle from that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a fragmentary perspective view of the framework, and
Figure 4 shows a fragmentary perspective view of the tent, taken on the line l4 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the' figures the numerals l designate the tent poles which may be of any suitable material, as wood or metal tubing. Near their upper ends these poles are connected by the respective pairs of toggle levers, the levers of each pair being designated by the numerals 2, 3. These levers 2, 3 of each pair have their adj acent ends pivoted together and their other ends are pivoted to the corresponding posts 1. The upper edge of each lever 3 has a notch 4 and the adjacent end of the lever 2 is ex-- 1930.. Serial No. 434,106.
tended beyond its pivot-midis provided with a lateral stop 5 adapted to seat insaid notchwhen the levers 2, "3 are brought into align-- ment.
The walls-of the tent-cover aredesignated, 5 generally, by the numeral 6 and permanently attached to-said walls, at the top, is the tent covering 7, said walls and covering being 7 composed of suitable fabric, or other flexible material.
At the corners the tent has the inside vertical pockets 8 through which the posts are fitted, as shown more particularly in Figure 4, and at the top of the tent those portions of the covering "Z, opposite the upper ends of the posts 1, are reinforced by additional ply 9, sewed or otherwise secured to the covering '7, so thatthe npper ends of said pdles will not perforate the covering.
Attached at their upper ends to the respeo'ti-ve reinforced portions 9, are the tent cords 10 and the outer :ends of 'these'cords are secured to the usual stakes 11, driven into the ground.
- The-tent, whencollapsed, has the poles arranged in adjacent parallel relation with the fabric covering rolled therearound so as to occupy small space. The tent maybe thus easily transported. In order to erect the tent it is un-rolled and the polesdisposed in vertical position with their lower ends rested on the ground the proper distance apart. The stakes are then driven and the cords 10 drawn taut to support the tent. The levers 2, 3 should then be drawn down into straightline position to force the :upperends of the poles apart and to stretch tightly the sides of the tent. The stops 5 will prevent the levers from passing center when thus brought into alignment.
The sides of the tent may have openings 12 that may be closed by the flaps 13 and also has an entrant opening 14 at one side that may be closed by the flap 15.
From the foregoing it is apparent that all of the parts of the tent are permanently at tached together, so that no parts will be liable to become lost and all of the parts will be easily available when it is desired to erect the tent.
The drawings and description disclose what is now considered to be the preferred form of the invention by way of illustration, while the broad principle of the invention 5 will be defined by the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A tent comprising side walls and a cover, of flexible material, secured together, inside vertical pockets at the corners of the tent, tent poles fitted through said pockets and retained permanently therein, the cover having reinforced portions opposite and resting against the upper ends of said poles.
2. A tent comprising side walls and a cover, of flexible material, secured together,
inside vertical pockets at the corners of the tent, tent poles fitted through said pockets and retained permanently therein, reinforcing ply at the corners of the cover against which the upper ends of the poles rest, and pairs of toggle levers connecting said poles together into'a framework.
3. A tent comprising side walls and a cover, of flexible material, secured together,
. inside vertical pockets at the corners of the tent whose upper ends are closed, tent poles fitted through said pockets and retained permanently therein, the cover having reinforced portions opposite and resting 33 against the upper ends of said poles, and
' supporting cords secured, at their upper ends, to said reinforced portions and at their other ends to ground anchors.
4. A tent comprising side Walls and a cov- 35 ering permanently secured to the upper margins of the side walls, said walls and covering being composed of flexible fabric material, inside, approximately vertical pockets secured to the side walls on the in- 40 side of the tent at the corners and extending from top to bottom of the tent, the upper ends of said pockets being closed by said cover, reinforcing material fastened to the top and side walls opposite the upper end of each pocket, tent poles fitted through said pockets whose upper ends abut said cover and whose lower ends extend beneath the walls, tent cords secured at their upper ends to said reinforced portions and whose lower ends are attachable to ground anchors, said tent having wall openings and flaps permanently attached'to the tent for closing said openings. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
