This invention relates to sanitary knife scabbards and more particularly to scabbards used by butchers while on the killing floor in slaughter houses.

The object of the invention is to provide a sanitary knife Scabbard, the construction of which is simple, durable and economical to manufacture.

Another object of the invention is to construct the scabbard of material which in no way affects or shortens the life of the knife points or edges held therein.

The invention consists of a scabbard, preferably made of wood and leather, andof twopart construction, and means for holding said parts together during use, and in means whereby the parts may be easily separated for the purpose of cleaning the inside or pocket of said Scabbard.

The invention further consists in the construction, combination, location and arrange ment of parts as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction I provide a sanitary scabbard comprising back 1 and front 2, which parts are preferably made of leather or other suitable pliable material. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively, the back 1 is provided near its top with spaced apart vertical slots 3 by which the scabbard may be supported upon the wearer by passing his belt therethrough in the well known manner. The front 2 is spaced apart from back 1 to form pocket 4 by side members 5, 6, 7 and 8, respectively,

as clearly shown in Fig. 5. These side members are preferably made of wood, the members 5 and 6 being rigidly attached to back 1 in any suitable manner, as, for example, by 0 tacks 9 and the side members 7 and 8, respectively, are rigidly attached to the front 2 in a like manner, as, for example, by tacks 10. Members 7 and 8, respectivel are spaced inwardly from the edges 2a 0' front 2, a distance equal to the thickness of side members 5 and 6. The upper ends of side members 5, 6, 7 and 8 are provided with slots 11, 12, 13 and 14, respectively, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7. 7

Hook 15 is received by slot 14 in side member 8 and securely held therein by screw 16 and hook 17 is received by slot 13 in side member 7 and rigidly held therein by screw 18. Bottom 19, of the Scabbard, is prefer ably made of wood and rigidly secured to back 1 by tacks la and the ends 20 thereof are notched to receive the lower ends of side members 5 and 6, as clearly shown at 21 in Fig. 6. Removable leather strip 22 is placed 30 over'the top surface of bottom 19 to prevent points 23 of knife blades 24 from becoming dulled.

Strip 25 is securely fixed to the front face 19a of bottom19 in any suitable manner as, 35 for'eXaInple, by tacks 26. This strip may be made ofleather, metal, wood, or like material, and its purpose is to guide or retain the lower edge 2?) of front 2 when said front is in the closed position upon the back 1. This strip 25, being rigidly attached to the bottom 19, is slightly spaced apart from the edges 5a and 6a of side members '5 and 6, respectively, thus forming a space or groove between said strip and said edges 5a and 6a within which the lower edge 2?) of front 2 is slidably received.

To clean the inside or knife pocket 4 of the Scabbard, the front 2 is entirely removed from the back 1, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,

or6 and 7, respectively. To assemble these two parts, namely, back 1 and front 2, place side members 7 and 8 between side members 5 and 6 so that the faces 7a and 8a of said side members 7 and 8 rest against the inside surface of back 1 and then slide said front 2 downwardly until the lower edge 2?) of said front rests upon bottom 19, at which time hook 15, attached to side member 8, will be by Letters Patent is received within slot 12 in the upper end of side member 6 and hook 17, rigidly attached to side member 7, will be received within slot 11 within the upper end of side member 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, respectively.

Thus itwill be seen that front 2 can be quickly and easily removed from the back 1x0 clean the inside or knife pocket 4 of the scabbard, "orto remove the leather strip or L pad 22, and that said front can be quickly attached to; the back 1 after the scabbard has'bee'n thoroughly cleaned in the manner above described.

0 While I am aware that knife scabbards 1 have heretofore been; made to enable clean ing theknife receiving pocket 4:, they have been'manufacture'd of metal with the front 2-hingedly attachedto the back 1, but I have found,-by actual use, that-this type of scabhard is impractical due hot the fact that its construction and manufacture is too costly,

inaddition to the metal damaging the edge of the knife blades 24. V a v An advantage of my invention 1s that the front 2 can be entirely removed from the back 1 with very little effort when it is desired to clean the pocket 4 of the Scabbard.

7 Another advantage of my invention is that the scabbard is composed chiefly of leather and wood and its construction is extremely imple and practical. While I have illustrated and described one preferred embodiment ofthe present invention, it isto be understood that certain changes and modifications can be made without departingfrom the scope or spiritthereof as defined in the claims. 7

What I claim as new and desire to secure 1. A- sanitary knife scabbard comprising a leather back, rigid side members attached thereto and each-having a recess in its upper end," a leather front having rigid members adapted to fit between said side mem "bers, means on each rigid member adapted to enter said recesses, respectively, whereby said front is detachablv mounted and means for removably holding the lower end of said front .in engagement with said rigid side Imembe-rs.

2. A; sanitary knife scabbar'd of the character stated and formed of two separable sections, the combination of a, back having slotted openings therein near its upper end,

a pair of side' 'members carried by said back,-

the upper end of each being provided with a recess, a bottom fixed to said back and side members, a front, side members carried thereby, and hook means carried by the upper end of each of said last-mentioned side members for releasably engaging the slots in said first-mentioned Side members whereby said front is releasably held in spaced apart relation upon the back.

3. A sanitary knife scabbard as specified in claim 2, wherein the front is tapered inwardly towards its bottom and wherein the correspon'dingportion of the back is likewise tapered inwardly towards its bottom sothat the knife pocket formed between said back and front is likewise formed tapering towards its bottom.

4. A sanitary knife scabbard formed of bers and adapted to be receivedby the recesses insaid first-mentioned side members whereby said back, sidemembers and front, respectively, are held in assembled relation with each otherand whereby said front can be entirely removed from said back'when desired. V

5. A sanitary knife scabbard as specified in claim 4 wherein the bottom is provided with 'a-removable strip of flexible material which can be replaced when desired, for the purposes specified.
